Chapter 110. Ghost Hunting? The Ghosts-Pin-You-Down Kind (3)
Qin Ying watched as Shen Wan devoured her hand-grabbed pancake, braised egg, and a cup of soy milk with great relish, seemingly enjoying every bite.
Throughout this time, Shen Wan remained seated under the large tree next to the police station, visible to everyone coming and going inside. Some kind-hearted officers approached Shen Wan, asking if she needed help, only to walk away with strange expressions after hearing her response.
“Chief, is that little girl outside a bit… mentally unstable?” one officer asked softly at Xu Cheng’s desk. His question held no malice; he genuinely wondered if something was wrong with Shen Wan. Otherwise, why would she say such bizarre things to him?
Xu Cheng, who had been researching all morning, looked up abruptly at his subordinate’s question. “Who are you talking about?”
“Who else? The cute little girl sitting under the big tree outside our station. When I came in earlier, I thought she might be in trouble. So I went to ask what was wrong, and guess what?”
Xu Cheng remembered now and said with a straight face, “She told you she’s a medium who can communicate with ghosts, and asked if there’s a reward for solving cases, right?”
“Oh, Chief, so you already know about this. Should we notify her parents to come pick her up? She’s so young; she should be in school studying hard, not messing around with this superstitious nonsense. We should believe in science, right?”
Xu Cheng didn’t respond directly, instead changing the subject, “Xiao Wu, any progress on the June 23rd home invasion robbery case? It’s been three months already.”
“Nothing. We’ve had no leads from the start, and all suspects have been cleared.” Xiao Wu’s earlier playful demeanor vanished, his tone turning somber. “I’ve always suspected the victim’s wife might be involved, but she has an alibi for those days. Her social circle is very simple, and neighbors all say she’s a very gentle woman who had a good relationship with the victim. Moreover, some neighbors knew she was planning to get pregnant. A woman preparing to have her husband’s child surely wouldn’t harm him, right?”
“What’s up, Chief? Do you have some news?” Xiao Wu perked up, asking excitedly. Since joining the force, he had solved countless cases, but just as many remained mysteries, painfully abandoned temporarily. As unsolved cases piled up, unable to bring justice for victims, he felt increasingly distressed. The youthful vigor he had when first joining had long since faded, his mind now constantly preoccupied with finding clues, identifying suspects, and bringing criminals to justice.
Xu Cheng didn’t answer Xiao Wu directly, only saying, “I have some thoughts. I’ve already sent people to follow up. We should have results within a week at most.”
Xu Cheng reasoned that if the “fool” next door wasn’t really a fool but was pretending, and had that kind of relationship with the victim’s wife, after three months, the two might have let their guard down. A week should be enough time to discover something. He had sent out two teams: one to watch the “fool,” and another to investigate the relationship between the “fool” and the victim’s wife. Regarding the latter, news should come quickly, given the detailed information that strange little girl outside had provided.
By noon, Shen Wan scraped together ten yuan from her pocket and bought a small bowl of noodles from a street vendor. She squatted under the tree, savoring the fragrant noodles, while Qin Ying’s eyes seemed glued to her.
Shen Wan noticed and said, “These are small noodles, very delicious.”
Qin Ying’s expression stiffened. Having been here so long, of course she knew these were small noodles; she didn’t need to be told.
But did they really smell that good?
As a ghost queen who had existed for countless years, Qin Ying certainly wouldn’t lean in close to ask if she could taste the noodles too.
Shen Wan, however, saw through Qin Ying’s covetous gaze, the longing in her eyes impossible to conceal. She chuckled inwardly.
Qin Ying seemed to sense this and said coldly, “You have less than twenty yuan left now. Based on the information you provided, even if the case is solved as quickly as possible, it’ll take about three days. Applying for the reward will take at least half a month. And you have less than twenty yuan left.” Qin Ying emphasized this point, wanting Shen Wan to understand she was out of money and shouldn’t keep buying food to show off in front of her.
Humans were truly the most annoying, always setting up stalls on street corners to sell such fragrant-looking food, eating like starved ghosts reborn. She suspected all humans in this world were reincarnated starved ghosts.
Shen Wan quickly finished her noodles and took out her phone, tapping on it. Qin Ying, curious, couldn’t help but lean in to look. She knew this was called a phone; almost everyone had one. Although her memories were hazy, she was certain there were no such things as phones in her era of existence.
“Do you know what this is?”
Shen Wan opened a page. “Look at the numbers here.”
Qin Ying glanced and her eyes widened. “2,000 yuan?”
“Yes, I have 2,000 in my Alipay account. On Monday, I’ll apply for a dorm room at school, solving the housing issue for very little money. Ah, schools are really friendly to students. The school cafeteria is cheap too, easily supporting me for a month or two. I’m a ghost hunter, after all. Can’t I make money in two months? Just that police reward will surely come through soon, and then I’ll have 100,000 yuan in hand.”
Qin Ying pursed her lips, feeling a bit bored.
“So now I can not only eat one bowl of noodles, but because I’m still hungry, I can eat another bowl.”
Under Qin Ying’s incredulous gaze, Shen Wan took another ten yuan and went back to the same food stall, choosing to sit there and eat. She ate with such joy that Qin Ying couldn’t resist floating to Shen Wan’s side, staring at her without blinking.
“Is it really that delicious?”
“It’s really delicious.”
Shen Wan had finished even the soup, licking her lips. “Extremely delicious.”
“Do you want to eat?”
Qin Ying answered instinctively, “I want to eat.” She had never eaten these things before; ghosts couldn’t taste the deliciousness of human food.
Even the offerings humans made to them couldn’t be truly enjoyed.
Ghosts could only move human objects by using their own soul power.
Ordinary ghosts could only float aimlessly, slowly drifting towards the underworld. If they encountered powerful evil ghosts along the way, their very existence could be in danger.
Ghosts with strong soul power like her could materialize without issue and easily handle human objects. But human food, while edible, still held no taste for her. So after saying she wanted to eat, she felt a bit regretful. It was too embarrassing; this wasn’t something she could eat just because she wanted to.
When Qin Ying came back to her senses, she found Shen Wan had disappeared. She hurriedly looked around and saw Shen Wan running back from a small shop. She quickly floated over, asking, “Where did you go?”
“Spent my last few yuan.”
Shen Wan had bought scissors and a lighter from the shop. She returned to the big tree with paper and a pen – yellow paper, the kind used to make spirit money.
Qin Ying watched, cupping her cheeks, as Shen Wan used the pen to draw a hand-grabbed pancake on the yellow paper. Surprisingly, it looked very realistic.
“This will have to do for now. When I get money, I’ll make you better ones.” As Shen Wan finished drawing, the pancake on the paper seemed to flash with light, but Qin Ying thought she must have imagined it.
Shen Wan cut out the drawn pancake with scissors, then wrote on the back: “Burned for Qin Ying.”
Finally, Shen Wan took out the lighter, set the drawn pancake on fire, and held it in front of her.
At first, Qin Ying thought Shen Wan was playing tricks on her. In all her years as a ghost, she had seen people burn paper clothes, paper cars, paper houses, and paper maids, but never paper pancakes. But as the drawn pancake gradually burned to ashes, a hot, steaming hand-grabbed pancake appeared in her hand.
Qin Ying was stunned.
The surrounding little ghosts were equally amazed.
They all crowded around, enviously looking at Qin Ying. Heavens, it was a real, hot, fragrant hand-grabbed pancake. Since becoming ghosts, even if they could swallow human food, their sense of smell and taste seemed to have vanished, unable to experience the wonders of food.
Even the wine and meat offered by their relatives tasted of nothing, and over time, they no longer yearned for the delicious foods of their past.
They hadn’t smelled such an aroma for so long, especially those who had been ghosts for many years.
Sensing their longing, Qin Ying quickly clutched the pancake tightly and took a quick bite. The moment she bit into it, her eyes lit up. Then, under the eager gazes of the many little ghosts, she rapidly devoured the pancake, finally looking at Shen Wan with expectant eyes.
“Was it good?”
“Delicious, very tasty.” Qin Ying’s cheeks flushed slightly, feeling ashamed for thinking Shen Wan had been playing tricks on her earlier. “I have nothing to give you in return.”
“Just be my wife, then.” Shen Wan struck while the iron was hot. “Be my wife, and you’ll have everything in the future. Whatever you want to eat, I’ll draw it for you.”
Qin Ying hesitated. Would it be embarrassing for a ghost queen to become a ghost hunter’s wife just for the sake of food?
“You can think about it. In the meantime, I’ll still provide you with food. If we can’t be wives, being good friends is nice too.”
Qin Ying sighed in relief, nodding seriously. “I’ll consider it carefully.”
The surrounding little ghosts shook their heads. Had their ghost queen really fallen for a mere pancake?
188: Ever heard of tricking ghosts? This is exactly that!
Three days later, Shen Wan was cleaning the classroom when she received a call from Xu Cheng.
“Student Shen Wan, do you have time?”
“Is this about the reward?” Shen Wan quickly tossed the broom aside, asking excitedly, “Has the reward been approved?”
Xu Cheng nearly choked but managed to say, “The reward still needs some time to process. Don’t worry, solving this case was all thanks to you. I just have some other questions I need to ask you.”
“Alright, but will you treat me to a meal? I’m very poor lately.”
Almost dead broke, actually. Keeping a ghost wife was quite expensive.
After hanging up, Qin Ying floated in front of Shen Wan, her eyes even brighter than Shen Wan’s. “Is Officer Xu going to give you the reward? You said earlier you’d buy better paper to draw food for me, is that true? And you mentioned buying pretty clothes and beautiful flowers to burn for me.”
Qin Ying was now wearing a white sleeveless dress that made her look ethereal. Shen Wan had bought it from a department store, given it special treatment, then burned it for Qin Ying. Clothes made of paper were too complicated to make, so it was easier to buy ready-made ones, treat them, and burn them for Qin Ying.
“I’m your wife now.”
“You said you’d support me.”
“The mall has many pretty dresses.”
“We’ll have money soon.”
Shen Wan: “……” Indeed, this ghost had no integrity whatsoever, readily selling her soul for pretty dresses.
