Chapter 24: Chapter 22: Target—Beast Taming Skill (Extra for the Chivalrous Lazy Sheep, the Silver Alliance Hierarch)

In this village, there were many tasks one could find, essentially divisible into two main categories.

The first category had no requirements; as long as one was willing to work, they could take on the task.

Logger, woodcutter, farmer, miner, shepherd, pig herder, harvester.

Relatively speaking, these professions didn't have much technical content. Once one accepted the task, the NPC handing out the task would tell the player how to do it and teach them the entry-level professional skills for free.

The other type required meeting prerequisite conditions to undertake the task, and each one had different preliminary conditions.

First up was the Militia. One needed to find the Civilian Soldier Captain to receive the task. The job involved guarding the village from monster threats, standing guard, and even joining the Militia Team to clear out monsters in the forest.

Xiao Jie was very interested in this job. If he could join a group of civilian soldiers to kill monsters and level up, it would undoubtedly be much safer.

However, when Xiao Jie expressed his desire to join the Militia Team, the Civilian Soldier Captain, Tie Qianli, said Xiao Jie wasn't strong enough yet to take on the profession.

Xiao Jie guessed there was probably a level requirement. He was currently only Level 1, which certainly wasn't sufficient; perhaps after leveling up to Level 5 or Level 10, he could join.

Next was the Hunter, another role Xiao Jie was eager to take on. After all, if he learned the Bow Skill, a remote profession was generally safer. Moreover, the village's hunter had several hunting dogs, indicating that the Hunter's job might allow pets, and he might even learn skills like the Beast Taming Skill. Having a meat shield to face monsters in battle would undoubtedly make it much safer.

However, the hunter also flatly refused Xiao Jie's request to learn from him and didn't even provide a reason, simply stating he was not interested in taking disciples.

This made Xiao Jie quite frustrated. The trigger condition for this profession appeared to be rather stringent.

The third was the blacksmith. This was relatively simple. With the precedent set by Wang Kai, he directly asked about the prerequisite conditions: first, one had to pay an apprenticeship fee of five silver taels. Wang Kai had to save up for two whole years to gather those five taels. Additionally, one had to increase Zhou Tong's favorability to 80.

Xiao Jie wasn't very interested in this one. Five silver taels was the equivalent of one hundred thousand yuan, which was too expensive.

The fourth was the chef, somewhat cheaper; the gift for apprenticeship was only 500 cents.

Cooking skills were quite practical, food being a long-term consumable. Mastering cooking could undoubtedly save quite a bit of money on food purchases.

The fifth was the fisherman. One needed to find an old man by the small river on the southern side of the village to receive this task. From the conversation, he learned the old man was a drunkard and especially craved a good drink, leading Xiao Jie to speculate that delivering a good bottle of wine might do the trick. However, it was uncertain what qualified as a good wine.

The sixth was the Medicine Gatherer. One could learn the Medicine Gathering Skill from the medicine shop owner, but when applying for the job, the shop owner said his Perception was too poor for the profession. It seemed that a certain standard of Perception attribute was required, so there was no helping it unless one leveled up and allocated more points to Perception.

The last profession was the night watchman, a bit special as it only required working at night to patrol the village, which sounded quite dangerous.

Nevertheless, the payment was high, earning 500 cents for a night's work.

This task was triggered by the village chief. However, the village chief claimed Xiao Jie's Yang energy wasn't sufficient, positing that he might encounter problems if he were to work as a night watchman, and thus, he refused him.

Xiao Jie was somewhat puzzled by this prerequisite. Perhaps it involved praying to his ancestors not to be troubled by ghosts when offering incense?

But the buffs given by the ancestors lasted only seven days. Did this task have a time limit?

Unfortunately, there were no professions related to learning swordsmanship, which disappointed Xiao Jie.

It wasn't that he had any particular interest in sword skills. Mainly, in a world of immortals and demons, a sword undoubtedly had a higher awe quotient, and perhaps it also had a higher potential.

Considering these dozen or so tasks, the one Xiao Jie most wanted to take on was undoubtedly the Hunter.

Bow Skill + suspected Beast Taming Skill – in a death game, such a combination was simply perfect.

The advantages of a remote profession needn't be mentioned, and having a combat-cooperative pet certainly offered a tremendous advantage.

Three stray dogs had once caused "I Want to Be Immortal" to lose direction completely. He and Han Luo, two noobs, managed to defeat a formidable Lost Soul Mountain Bandit purely through numerical superiority.

Having righteousness on your side, even in a two against one situation, sometimes works better than any Equipment Skills.

But how exactly does one trigger the Hunter task?

With no clues at all, Xiao Jie ultimately felt he had to ask Wang Kai, who had spent three years in the village and seen so many players that he must have a ton of information.

The only worry was that he would want something in return for that information, which would be troublesome.

Walking into the blacksmith shop, Wang Kai was still there hammering away at his iron sword, completely focused on earning money through hard work, with no intention of leveling up or improving his strength.

"Oh, Feng my boy, what brings you here? Looking to buy equipment or gold?"

"Do you know how to get the Hunter task?" Xiao Jie asked straightforwardly.

"Hehehe, boy, thinking of getting a pet?" Wang Kai was very sharp.

"How did you know?"

"Ginkgo Village has seen roughly two hundred players come and go, out of which about one hundred fifty want pets. How do you think I knew?"

Xiao Jie thought to himself, alright, seems I'm not the first to think of this approach.

"So can the Hunters learn the Beast Taming Skill?"

"Of course, but it's not Beast Taming Skill, it's Dog Training Skill. You can only train dogs. It's pretty useful in the early stages, but not so much once you reach higher levels."

Xiao Jie felt somewhat disappointed, "What about Bow Skill?"

"That's actually quite useful, at least until you learn Spells. Bow Skill is the best remote skill there is. Learning it is definitely worth it, though I'm only repeating what I've heard since I haven't played it myself."

"So you do know how to get the Hunter task, right?"

Wang Kai laughed, "Of course I do, it's actually no big secret. At one point, it was almost an open secret. But not many could do it. That Hunter has a wife with a strange illness, constantly hiding indoors away from sunlight, needing hundred-year-old ginseng to sustain her life. You just need to give him a piece of hundred-year-old ginseng, and you can become Yang Baichuan's disciple,

learn Bow Skill and Dog Training Skill, and when you graduate, he'll even give you a Hunting Dog as a pet."

That's a decent deal, graduating with a pet to boot.

"Where can I get this hundred-year-old ginseng?"

"You collect it deep in the valley if you're lucky, and sometimes the medicine shop in Ginkgo Village sells it. It's not expensive, just 10 silver coins each."

10 silver coins! That's one hundred thousand yuan!

Xiao Jie was speechless; that was just too expensive.

"How about buying some gold? It's only one hundred thousand yuan. Getting a starter Dog Training Skill plus a remote weapon skill early on is definitely worth it."

Wang Kai was indeed dedicated to his job, always ready to sell his services when an opportunity arose.

No thanks.

Xiao Jie quickly shook his head. He couldn't come up with one hundred thousand yuan, and besides, he already had the "Enlightenment" BUFF, so it wasn't cost-effective to spend money on a basic, popular version of Dog Training Skill.

Xiao Jie scanned through his notebooks, reviewing the tasks he'd recorded, quickly deploying his associative ability.

Learning the Beast Taming Skill was simply a matter of taking on tasks related to taming animals. Both the Shepherd and pig herder satisfied this aspect, and neither job required any prerequisites. He could definitely put some effort into these professions. With a comprehension of 21, he had self-taught the Saber Skill through Satori; he certainly didn't believe he couldn't figure out the Beast Taming Skill on his own.
