Chapter 167: Chapter 166 Memory Purgatory Maze
Knox fell into memory purgatory, his figure dissolving into a streak of golden light. The air was thick with nostalgia and regret, the lights of memory dancing like fireflies. "Elara's childhood keepsake must be in her earliest happy memory," he whispered, swatting away a light that symbolized his sister's funeral.
A shadowy figure appeared in front of him - Lyra, but younger, with a now-defunct scar on her cheek. "Knox, what are you doing in my mind?" she asked, her voice echoing.
He froze. "This is Elara's memory maze, not yours."
Lyra smiled, her figure blending into the shadows to reveal Xander's grinning face. "Surprise! When Elara merged with Seraphina, I gave her a memory anchor. Now, let's see what secrets we can find." Knox tried to retreat, but the maze moved, trapping him in the memory of Elara's tenth birthday. She stood on the sunlit grass, holding a crystal box - a symbol in her hand. But as Knox reaches for it, the grass burns, revealing Lyra standing over a prone figure.
"Your sister's 'death' was easy to stage," Lyra says to Xander (in memory). "Pay now, or I'll tell Elara you killed her parents."
Knox stumbles, realizing the truth: Lyra had been working for Xander from the beginning, using him as a pawn. The real memory orb shows her stabbing Elara's mother, then framing a shadow creature.
"Found you!" Seraphina's voice echoes, and the memory maze begins to crumble. Knox grabs the crystal box, but Lyra's shadow grabs his ankles. "Do you think you can ruin centuries of planning?"
He activates the locket, and a beam of pure childhood joy blasts out, disintegrating Lyra's shadow. But as he escapes the maze, he sees her real self standing over Elara, tied to a stone altar.
"Welcome back, Knox," Lyra says, pressing the knife to Elara's throat. "It is time to awaken the Dark Seed."
Elara's eyes snapped open, half light, half shadow. "Hello, Knox. Did you enjoy my little memory show?" Seraphina purred, throwing the knife from Lyra's hand. "But you forgot one thing: I am the only one who can control the Seed."
She crushed the Dark Seed in her palm, and black smoke gushed out, forming the ghostly figure of Xander. "Well done, Seraphina," he said, blending with her. "Now, let us show the world what true balance is."
Knox raised the crystal locket, but Lyra kicked it out of his hand. "Foolish child. This locket only works for pure souls - and yours is tainted by vengeance."
The Balance Star above began to glow red, and the World Tree let out a dying cry. Elara/Seraphina/Xander smiled, their figures shifting between light and shadow. "The ultimate sacrifice requires a triple betrayal," they said in unison. "Nox betrayed his sister, Lyra betrayed her oath, Elara betrayed her light. Now, watch us rewrite reality."
Staring at the shattered pendant, Nox realized too late that the true sacrifice was not a person - it was Innocence itself. With the Three Virtues corrupted, the Balance is about to unleash a force that will destroy not only the World Tree, but the very nature of good and evil.
