Chapter 165: Chapter 164 The Crystalline Core of Despair
The Worldtree's roots twitched like wounded serpents, their once-vibrant green now marbled with veins of obsidian. Elara pressed her palm against the trunk, flinching as a jolt of cold energy shot up her arm. "The shadow is spreading from the core," she said, her voice trembling. "Xander's 影之种 is feeding on the shards' combined power."
Lyra hacked at a tendril of shadow with her sword, only for it to regenerate thicker. "So much for 'saving the world.' We should've smashed those shards when we had the chance."
Nox knelt beside a glowing fissure in the ground, his fingers tracing ancient runes. "Wait—the murals in the labyrinth... they showed the Worldtree creating a 'Light Well' to counteract darkness. If we can find its source—"
A deafening roar cut him off. From the heart of the tree, a figure emerged: Xander, but transformed. His skin was cracked like obsidian, veins of purple light pulsing beneath, and his eyes had become swirling portals to the abyss. "Welcome to the new world order," he rasped, his voice a chorus of whispers. "The shards have unlocked the Worldtree's true potential—now it will feed my shadow army."
Elara raised the merged shards, their light now flickering between pure white and menacing black. "You said the shards would destroy it, but they're just amplifying the shadow!"
Xander laughed, causing the ground to quake. "Oh, they will destroy it—once I plant the final 影之种. But first, let's play a game." He snapped his fingers, and a storm of shadowy tendrils shot toward them. "Find the Light Well before your precious tree becomes a husk. If you can."
They fled through the twisting roots, pursued by shadow warriors that materialized from the darkness. Nox paused at a junction, his hand pressed to a glowing root. "This way—the magic here is different, warmer."
They emerged into a chamber unlike any other. Crystal formations grew from the floor and ceiling, each pulsating with a faint golden light. At the center, a pool of liquid light swirled, but it was surrounded by a cage of black ice. "That's the Light Well," Elara breathed. "But how do we get past the shadow ice?"
Lyra slammed her sword into the ice, which only grew thicker. "It's absorbing our attacks!"
Nox closed his eyes, concentrating. "The ice... it's made from memories of failure and loss. To break it, we need to summon pure light—"
"—which we can only do by unifying the shards' power," Elara finished. She held the shards above the pool, but as their light touched the ice, it began to crack... and the shards themselves trembled, emitting a dark pulse.
Xander's voice echoed from the shadows. "Ah, ah, ah—did I forget to mention the shards have a mind of their own? They crave balance, but sometimes balance means destruction."
The crystal chamber began to collapse, shadow ice spreading like wildfire. Elara felt the shards pulling her toward the pool, their energy conflicting—one side urging her to heal the Worldtree, the other to unleash its destruction.
"Elara, look!" Nox pointed to an inscription on the floor: "Only the one who accepts both light and shadow may wield the shards."
She hesitated, remembering the guardian's words: "Beware the betrayer in your midst." But Nox had already proven his loyalty, Lyra stood by her side, and the Worldtree's pulse was growing weaker.
Taking a deep breath, Elara stepped into the pool of liquid light, shards raised high. "If balance is what they want," she shouted, "then balance is what they'll get!"
The shards exploded in a burst of white-hot energy, vaporizing the shadow ice. But as the Light Well was freed, the shards began to disintegrate, their particles merging with the liquid light.
Xander howled in anger, his shadow form rippling. "No! You were supposed to fail!"
Elara turned, her eyes now glowing with both light and shadow. "You forgot one thing, Xander—balance includes accepting your own darkness." She raised her hand, and a beam of iridescent energy shot out, striking Xander in the chest.
His form began to fade, but not before he smiled wickedly. "You may have saved the Worldtree... for now. But the shards are gone, and the shadow will always return." With that, he dissolved into a cloud of smoke.
The Light Well surged, healing the Worldtree's blackened roots. Elara collapsed, exhausted, as Lyra and Nox rushed to her side.
"Is it over?" Lyra asked, looking up at the rejuvenated tree.
Nox shook his head, pointing to the sky. Where the shards had disintegrated, a new constellation was forming—three stars glowing in perfect balance. "I think it's just the beginning."
Elara smiled weakly, feeling the Worldtree's gratitude flowing through her. But as she closed her eyes, she couldn't shake the feeling that Xander was right—the shadow would return, and next time, they might not have the shards to save them.
