Chapter 163: Chapter 162 Sands of Time and Betrayal

The scorching sun beat down on the Great Desert of Azzar, its golden dunes stretching to the horizon like an ocean of sand. Elara shielded her eyes, the merged shards in her satchel humming with a strange frequency. "The next shard is here—somewhere beneath these dunes."

Lyra adjusted her water skin, her voice dry. "Great. Just what we need: a needle in a haystack the size of a continent."

Nox knelt, tracing his fingers through the sand. "Wait—look at this." He brushed away a layer of grit, revealing a faded stone slab engraved with a serpent eating its own tail. "This is the symbol of the Ancient Ones. The shard must be in their buried city."

As if on cue, the ground rumbled. A massive sandstorm whipped up, its swirling winds forming the shape of a colossal scorpion. "That's no natural storm," Elara shouted, raising a shield as razor - sharp sand particles pelted them.

The sand scorpion lunged, its tail stinger dripping with purple venom. Lyra charged, sword aimed at the creature's glowing red eyes, but it vanished into the storm, only to reappear behind Nox. He barely rolled out of the way, his staff leaving a trail of ice in the sand.

Elara focused on the shards, their combined energy pulsing in sync with the storm. "It's an elemental guardian! We need to disrupt its connection to the sand." She slammed her palm into the ground, and a ring of iridescent light exploded outward, crystallizing the sand beneath them.

The scorpion howled, its form destabilizing. But before they could strike, a familiar voice echoed through the storm. "Well done, Balance Child—but you're still one step behind."

Xander materialized on a nearby dune, his white hair whipping in the wind. In his hand, a dark scepter pulsed with the same purple venom as the scorpion's stinger. "I trust you've met my little pet. Funny thing—she was once a guardian of this very shard, until I showed her the benefits of... new management."

Lyra charged at Xander, but he snapped his fingers, and the sand beneath her feet turned to quicksand. "Lyra!" Elara and Nox raced to help, but the scorpion blocked their path, its pincers clamping down on Nox's staff.

Xander strolled toward the struggling Lyra, scepter raised. "You know, Elara, the first time I saw the Worldtree, I thought it was beautiful. Then I realized beauty is just a cage for the weak." He jabbed the scepter into the sand, and a pyramid of black crystal erupted, trapping Lyra inside. "Now, hand over the shards, or your friend becomes a permanent part of my collection."

Elara's vision blurred with rage. She raised the merged shards, their light so intense it turned the sand around her to glass. "Let her go, Xander."

Xander laughed, but his smile faded as the shards began to glow with a new color—pure, unadulterated gold. The sand scorpion shrieked, its body dissolving into grains that formed a staircase leading underground. "What is this? The shards aren't supposed to—"

A burst of golden energy shot from the shards, shattering the black crystal pyramid. Lyra fell free, gasping for air. "Elara... your eyes..."

Elara touched her face, feeling the warmth of light radiating from her pupils. In her mind, she heard a thousand voices—the ancient guardians of the Worldtree, their memories flooding her consciousness. "The Final Shard lies in the Heart of Azzar... but beware the betrayer in your midst."

Xander vanished in a cloud of shadow, his voice echoing, "This isn't over! The Heart will be mine!"

Nox helped Lyra to her feet, his expression unreadable. "We should follow the staircase. The shard must be down there."

Elara hesitated, the guardian's warning ringing in her ears. As she looked at her friends, she noticed a faint purple mark on Nox's neck—hidden until now, like a brand burned by dark magic. "The betrayer in your midst..."

The sand staircase began to crumble. "We need to move!" Lyra shouted, rushing downward.

Elara followed, her hand gripping the shards tightly. Was Nox working for Xander? And if so, how long had he been a spy? The Heart of Azzar awaited, but now she wasn't sure if she was walking into a trap... or leading her friends to their deaths.
