Chapter 155: Chapter 154 Siege of the Worldtree
The air outside the Worldtree's stronghold crackled with malevolent energy as the first wave of abyssal creatures lunged forward. Grotesque, tentacled beasts with eyes that glowed an otherworldly purple slammed into the barrier surrounding the tree, sending shockwaves that made the ground tremble beneath Elara's feet.
"Hold the line!" Lyra's voice boomed, her sword flashing as she parried an attack from a scaly, winged creature. The Keepers of Balance, a ragtag group of warriors, mages, and scouts, stood shoulder to shoulder, their weapons at the ready. But Elara could see the fear in their eyes; these were not like any creatures they'd faced before.
Nox nocked an arrow, his hands steady despite the chaos. "Elara, we need you to focus on that shard! We'll hold them off as long as we can!" he shouted over the din of battle.
Elara nodded, her grip tightening on the shard. She ducked into a side chamber, away from the immediate danger, and placed the shard on a table. The ancient scrolls they'd retrieved from the hidden chamber lay scattered around her, their faded ink filled with symbols and stories she barely understood.
As she pored over the scrolls, a particular passage caught her eye. "The Shard of Origins is both a gift and a curse. When united with its brethren, it can restore the world to its primeval state or plunge it into eternal darkness." Elara's heart skipped a beat. So, there were more shards out there.
Suddenly, a deafening crash shook the room. One of the abyssal creatures had broken through the outer defenses and was charging straight towards her. Without thinking, Elara raised her hands, and a blast of iridescent energy shot out. The creature let out a screech as it dissolved into a puddle of black goo.
But more were coming. Elara knew she had to act fast. She closed her eyes, focusing on the connection she felt with the Worldtree. Images flashed through her mind - a hidden chamber deep within the tree, a pedestal holding another shard, and Xander's mocking face as he watched the chaos unfold.
Back outside, Lyra was pushed to her knees by a massive, horned beast. Its claws were inches from her throat when Nox's arrow pierced its eye. "Get up!" he yelled, reaching out a hand to pull her to her feet. "We can't let them get to the Worldtree!"
The Keepers fought with renewed vigor, but the abyssal horde seemed endless. Lyra could see the barrier around the Worldtree flickering; it wouldn't hold much longer.
Inside, Elara followed the Worldtree's guidance. She ran through the twisting corridors, the shard in her hand leading the way. Finally, she reached the hidden chamber. The pedestal was there, just as she'd seen in her vision, and on it rested a shard that glowed with a warm, golden light.
As she reached for the shard, a voice echoed through the chamber. "Well, well, well. Look at you, little Balance Child, playing right into my hands."
Elara whirled around to see Xander leaning against the doorway, a smug grin on his face. "You think you can stop me? The more shards you find, the closer I am to achieving my goal."
Elara's eyes narrowed. "What do you want with the shards? What's your real plan?"
Xander laughed, a cold, menacing sound. "The shards hold the power to rewrite reality. With them, I can create a world where the Worldtree no longer stands in my way. And you, my dear, are the key to finding them all."
Before Elara could respond, Xander disappeared in a puff of shadow. She knew she had to get back to the battle and help her friends. With the new shard in hand, she hoped she'd finally have the power to turn the tide against Xander and his army of abyssal
