A Professor of Magic at Hogwarts

Chapter 662: Blood Bond - (2)

Harry suddenly remembered the letter he had read, where his mother Lily mentioned Dumbledore and Grindelwald's close friendship, but perhaps due to space constraints, Lily didn't mention the details or specify the time in the letter. So when Harry heard this name from the mouth of the blonde boy in front of him, he was completely unprepared.

What followed was a long segment of memory snippets, enough to make Harry realize the rapid progress of their friendship. He even read several enthusiastic letters as an observer, presented in a sudden and uncomfortable way—Muggles, control, government, army... these words appeared repeatedly in front of him, poking at his heart.

But all of this paled in comparison to the scene in the barn.

Two people—young, future famous individuals—Dumbledore and Grindelwald, facing each other, using their wands to cut their palms, then clasping their hands together, their blood merging, dazzling light illuminating their young and solemn faces.

Harry felt dizzy. Finally, when the merged blood beads were covered with a layer of metal shell, he loudly questioned what it was. Dumbledore had no answer, and in a weak yet firm voice, he told Harry that it was a "blood pact," he and Grindelwald had forged a bond of blood.

The class ended in a hurry, in the way Harry least wanted.

"Harry, Harry?" Ron called out, "We're falling behind; I don't want my homework to be two inches longer today."

"I know," Harry muttered, busying himself, but his mind was made up.

Before the end of class, students lined up for inspection.

Felix commented casually as the long line gradually diminished.

Harry intentionally waited until the end, holding a chestnut jar, until Ron and Hermione left after seeing him. Felix looked at him thoughtfully.

"It seems that your real problem can't be heard by others."

"Yeah, um... Professor, I wanted to ask what a blood pact is?"

Felix looked surprised.

He thought for a few seconds— "The magical world has many contracts, from informal verbal agreements to magical contracts, the most solemn and cautious type of contract is treated with utmost care. Once signed, it cannot be violated because the cost of breaking it is too high."

"Death?" Harry asked softly.

"...Yes, like unbreakable vows, and of course, blood pacts. However, the latter is more stringent in its conditions and only exists in legends."

"Why? Aren't their effects similar?" Harry asked in confusion. "Except for the number of people, unbreakable vows require a witness."

"I can list many differences," Felix said, and Harry blushed, feeling a bit dull, not realizing the "many differences" the professor mentioned.

"But the most important thing is the content of the oath. Unbreakable vows are more flexible in content; I can swear that I will never eat Chocolate Frogs in my life, or make myself use my right foot to enter doors from now on... In short, without specific requirements. But a blood pact is different; it has its own magical core, and there is no need to specify the contract to be followed. This brings a serious consequence, can you find it, Harry?"

Harry racked his brains, not needing to swear... what did that mean? Not wasting words? No, definitely not that... wait, not using language... not restricted...

"A blood pact can't be deceived by lies?" he blurted out.

Felix smiled and nodded.

"Unbreakable vows are closer to the word 'contract', so the content of the oath must be determined in words, and words... can be fooled. There are always loopholes to be found, as long as the final requirement is met. In other words, it controls your behavior and has a certain lag."

"In extreme cases, a person who is determined to die can sign any unbreakable, 'false' oath."

"But a blood pact is different," Harry said excitedly, "it has a fixed content, which means it can't be deceived by eloquence, both parties must be absolutely sincere, and even the thought of breaking the pact—" he looked at Felix, confirming.

"You're right, a blood pact binds the heart, and any attempt to violate it will immediately backfire."

"What is its content?" Harry asked eagerly.

Felix hesitated for a moment.

"As far as I know, it's 'not to harm each other.'"

"Can it be destroyed? I mean, the token of the blood pact?" Harry continued to ask.

Felix glanced at him, "Did I mention a token?"

"Oh, um—"

"Maybe it can be destroyed," Felix didn't pursue the loophole in Harry's words, but simply said, "I've never signed such a contract, so I don't know the specific results."

In fact, all the contracts he had signed had one common feature: he could tear them up and distort them at any time. But for those he was not sure about destroying—whether it was an unbreakable vow or a blood pact—he had no interest in touching them. His knowledge was also very limited.

Harry left with a heavy heart.

Felix stayed in place, watching him disappear, then suddenly raised his head to stare at the ceiling, his gaze seeming to penetrate the walls. He stared at the location of the Headmaster's office tower with a deep and thoughtful look.

Perhaps even Harry himself was not aware of the directionality of his question.

"A blood pact... Dumbledore and who? On equal terms—yes, only Grindelwald."

Miscellaneous pieces of information continued to be extracted from his memory, and Felix began to try to piece together a complete story. The first thing he thought of was Newt's unintentional mention of secrets involving Dumbledore that couldn't be revealed.
