Chapter : Epilogue
Beatrice snuggled deeper into Shawn's side, her laughter still echoing through their cozy bedroom. "You're crazy, you know that?" she teased, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Five kids? You're going to turn me into a permanent resident of the maternity ward!"
Shawn's grin was infectious, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he wrapped his arms tighter around her. "Hey, I just want to fill our home with love and chaos," he whispered, his breath sending shivers down her spine. "We've got plenty of time, though. First, let's enjoy being newlyweds."
Beatrice's thoughts drifted back to their three-year journey, from their first date to their fairy-tale wedding. She remembered the countless nights they'd spent talking about their dreams, their fears, and their aspirations. Shawn had always been her rock, her confidant, and her best friend.
"I'm so grateful for our life together," Beatrice said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I feel like the luckiest person alive."
Shawn's expression softened, and he pulled her closer. "I'm the lucky one, baby," he whispered. "I get to spend the rest of my life making you happy."
As they basked in the warmth of their newfound life together, Beatrice's expression turned serious. "I wish your mom could see how happy we are," she said, her voice tinged with a hint of sadness. "She's still so cold towards me."
Shawn's expression turned thoughtful, and he stroked her hair. "Give her time, baby," he whispered. "She'll come around. Besides, I told you, she always thought I'd end up with Lana, remember?" He chuckled, and Beatrice playfully rolled her eyes.
"Your mom is something else," Beatrice teased. "I swear, she's more excited about our future kids than she is about us being married."
Shawn laughed. "Well, she's always been a bit of a softie when it comes to kids," he said. "But don't worry, I'll talk to her. She'll come around."
The next morning, Beatrice woke to the tantalizing aroma of freshly cooked breakfast. Shawn stood at the stove, his hair mussed, and a spatula in hand. "Morning, beautiful!" he called out, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
Beatrice stretched, yawned, and padded into the kitchen. "Morning, handsome," she replied, snuggling into his side. "What's on the menu?"
Shawn grinned. "Pancakes, scrambled eggs, and bacon," he said. "I figured we could fuel up for a busy day."
As they sat down to eat, Beatrice couldn't help but feel grateful for this new life they were building together. She sang along to the radio as she tidied the house, her heart full of joy and love. Shawn had always been her rock, and now, as her husband, he made every day feel like a dream come true.
After breakfast, Shawn rushed to get ready for work, leaving Beatrice to her domestic chores. As she put away the dishes, she hummed to herself, feeling content and at peace. She had graduated a few months ago, but she had decided to put her career on hold to focus on building a life with Shawn.
"I'm so happy to be a full-time wife," she said to herself, smiling as she put away the last dish. "I get to take care of Shawn and our future family. What could be better than that?"
As she finished tidying the house, Beatrice felt a sense of satisfaction wash over her. She knew that she and Shawn still had their whole lives ahead of them, but for now, she was content to bask in the happiness and love that filled their home.
.....
Five years later
Beatrice's eyes snapped open, and a wave of nausea washed over her. She rushed to the bathroom, her heart racing with anticipation. This was it, the moment she'd been waiting for. She took a deep breath, unwrapped the pregnancy test, and waited. The seconds ticked by, each one feeling like an eternity. Finally, the result appeared, and Beatrice's heart sank. Negative. Again.
A sob escaped her lips, and she felt like she'd been punched in the gut. Why wasn't this happening for her? She and Shawn had been trying for years, and yet, every month ended in disappointment. The frustration and despair threatened to overwhelm her.
Just as she was about to break down completely, she heard the bathroom door creak open. Shawn stood in the doorway, his eyes bleary from sleep, but filled with concern.
"Hey, baby, what's wrong?" he asked, rushing to her side.
Beatrice couldn't speak; she just shook her head and sobbed. Shawn wrapped his arms around her, holding her close.
"Everything will be alright, Beatrice," he whispered. "We'll get through this together."
Beatrice nodded, feeling a small sense of comfort. She took a few deep breaths, wiped her tears, and stood up.
"I'm going to start breakfast," she said, forcing a smile.
Shawn nodded and handed her a towel. "I'll join you in a minute."
As Beatrice made her way downstairs, the silence was oppressive. She started tidying up the kitchen, putting away the dishes from the night before. The sound of footsteps behind her made her turn.
"Good morning, Beatrice," her mother-in-law, Margaret, said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Still playing house, I see."
Beatrice felt a sting from the comment, but she bit back a retort. She'd learned to pick her battles with Margaret.
Her father-in-law, John, followed Margaret into the kitchen, his eyes twinkling with kindness.
"Good morning, Beatrice, dear," he said. "How are you today?"
Beatrice forced a smile. "I'm fine, Dad. Thanks for asking."
Margaret snorted. "Of course you are," she said. "You're still living off my son's hard work."
Beatrice felt her anger rising, but she took a deep breath and let it go. She wasn't going to let Margaret get to her. Not today.
Shawn entered the kitchen, his eyes scanning the room. "Mom, Dad, good morning," he said, his voice neutral.
Beatrice scrubbed the kitchen counter, her hands moving with precision. She took pride in keeping a tidy home, but today she felt like she was scrubbing away her frustrations.
Margaret walked in, followed by a woman who looked uncannily like Beatrice. But there was something off about her features - a hardness in her eyes, a sharpness to her jawline.
"Beatrice, dear, this is Lana," Margaret said, her voice sweet. "My best friend's daughter. She's come to visit her Aunt Maggie and Shawnee."
Beatrice's eyes narrowed slightly as she took in Lana's mocking gaze. But she said nothing, simply smiled politely.
Lana's handshake was firm, her smile saccharine. "It's lovely to finally meet you, Beatrice," she said. "I've heard so much about you."
Margaret snorted, a sly glint in her eye. "I'm sure you have," she said. "Beatrice, why don't you make us some tea?"
Beatrice nodded, her face calm. But inside, she seethed. She knew what Margaret was trying to do - stir up trouble.
