chapter 173
Episode 173 – I Met the Author
Adalbert, who followed Damran through the back alleys, was finally able to be guided to the meeting place he had prepared.
“Welcome back. I’ve been waiting for you.”
There were several tables and chairs set up in the place where Adalbert was guided, and a large old man sat on one of the chairs and gave Adalbert a welcome greeting.
“Nice to meet you. You wrote a very interesting book.”
Adalbert accepted the old man’s greeting and gave him a good word.
Inferring from the old man’s words, it seemed that he was the author of this book.
“It wasn’t a big deal. Just…Understand that it was a struggle to find the truth.”
The old man waved his hand and smiled awkwardly at Adalbert’s words.
From the words coming out of the old man’s mouth, Adalbert became convinced that this old man was the author of the book he had seen that day.
The book contained detailed records from a long time ago, making it difficult to say that it was written by a young person.
As if a person was standing with both feet at the scene.
“By the way, since you’ve come this far, you must have had a lot of questions after reading my book. Let’s talk slowly.”
The old man motioned to Adalbert and invited her to take a seat.
Adalbert accepted the old man’s recommendation and carefully sat down facing him.
“Then, what did you wonder about after reading the book written by this old man?”
The old man looked at Adalbert and smiled curiously.
“I had some questions, but I was also surprised while reading the book.”
“Really?”
When Adalbert said that he was surprised at times while reading the book he had written, the old man seemed to be in a better mood and smiled brighter than before.
“The contents the author wrote conveyed a real-life feeling that cannot be found in other books.”
Adalbert read the book written by the old man and began to speak honestly about what he felt.
“Hmm, something like that.”
The old man felt good about Adalbert’s praise
Just as there is a saying that a compliment can make even a whale dance, it was a great joy for the author to purely say the good things he felt after reading the book.
“It’s as if I was a person who stood with both feet ‘directly’ at the scene.”
However, upon hearing Adalbert’s next words, the old man’s face froze as if time had stopped for a moment.
It was because of the word’directly’that came out of Adalbert’s mouth his.
From the perspective of the author of the book he was reading, this is what Adalbert said.
The old man said that Adalbert’s words were too factual to be said to have been researched. So tell the truth. He seemed to say, ‘Weren’t you there?’
Haha. You must be surprised because it’s so realistic. What makes you think that?”
The old man smiled at Adalbert’s question and in turn asked Adalbert a question to get a different answer.
“Hmm, isn’t it obvious?”
“Of course?”
The old man expressed doubts about Adalbert’s answer.
You mean it’s natural? What on earth is normal?
“Everything was overly realistic.”
Adalbert answered the old man’s question with a gentle smile.
“Didn’t you think that maybe it was because I was good at writing?”
“No matter how good a person is at writing or how well he/she does data research, is it good enough to maintain the sense of reality?”
“That alone is not enough. Anyone with genius writing skills, including myself, can write a realistic piece just by researching data.”
The old man responded as if it were natural to Adalbert’s point.
Still, he was showing great confidence, calling himself a genius.
“That’s right. People who are called geniuses always work in surprising ways that ordinary people cannot understand.”
Adalbert seemed to agree with the old man’s answer.
“But the person who calls himself a ‘genius’ made a minor mistake.”
“Mistake?”
After hearing Adalbert’s words, doubts immediately appeared on the old man’s face.
At the same time, he seemed to be thinking about what mistakes he made when writing the book, raising one of his eyebrows or tilting his head slightly.
“Yes. It’s a big mistake.”
Adalbert smiled and looked at the old man.
And with the following answer, the old man’s eyes slowly began to tremble.
“The person who is said to be a genius wrote down different years of occurrence of the incident, just one or two pages apart. It happened not in one or two places, but in many places.”
“That’s a mistake anyone can make. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but my memory isn’t what it used to be.”
The old man calmly offered his own rebuttal after hearing Adalbert’s answer his, but his insides his seemed to be burning.
‘Damn, where did I make a mistake? I clearly checked all the data properly when writing.’
The old man was anxious because he felt like he had made some mistakes without realizing it.
That’s because part of the content of his book was that he deliberately framed the empire and various kingdoms as bad guys by piecing together several events.
The old man thought that it was probably a mistake that occurred in the process.
If we don’t quickly come up with an excuse for this, the whole situation will be distorted.
‘Hold on! Just hold on a little longer and you’ll be ready!’
But he couldn’t give up.
This was because Damran was sending a signal from behind with his mouth to hold on a little longer.
“Hmm, tell me where I made a mistake and I will correct it. I guess I made a mistake during cross-verification due to my age.”
Adalbert smiled when he saw the old man’s reaction.
“On page 232 of the book, it says the year 874, but on the next page it incorrectly says it’s the year 814. And on the next page it says the year 824.”
“It’s all from 814. We researched records from long ago, and we referenced records left by different people, so sometimes the numbers come out wrong due to numbers with similar shapes.”
“Is that so?”
The old man heard the year on the page that Adalbert had mentioned and decided to correct the year.
“That’s right. I referred to several records that dealt with the incident that happened in 814, but the year in the middle looked a little different, perhaps because everyone’s writing was bad, so after cross-checking the records, I was able to definitively conclude that it was 814.”
But that was his mistake
“There was no such information on page 232.”
Because there was no content written on the page that Adalbert pointed out in the first place.
“What, what?”
As soon as the old man heard it, he realized what mistake he had made.
I was embarrassed by Adalbert’s point, and as a result, I made a mistake by not even remembering how many pages there were in the book.
“In the first place, page 232… Is the very last page of the book.”
What Adalbert was talking about was the very last page of the book.
It was a place with an inside cover made to protect the book, with nothing written on it.
“Tsk.”
Only then did the old man realize that he had been caught up in Adalbert’s trick.
If I had been a little more cautious, if I hadn’t panicked, I could have put Adalbert in a corner.
Adalbert smiled and continued his words.
“And the years 814, 874, and 824 did not appear in the book to begin with.”
It was like that.
In fact, numbers representing the years 814, 874, and 824 never appeared in the book.
If the old man had been a little calmer, he would have realized that these numbers did not appear in his book, but whatever excuse he tried to make, it was already too late.
And, the part that Adalbert pointed out did not fit the question of whether the writing was too realistic.
It was a loophole that could have been recognized if one thought about it slowly and carefully, but the old man’s downfall was that he was suddenly taken aback by Adalbert’s question.
“I have one request: bring in a real author, not you.”
Adalbert sat down and began to state his request.
His request was to bring in the real author.
Adalbert never thought that the book was written by one person.
Why?
This was because when introducing the events covered in the books he had seen, the sentence structure and breathing were not consistent and were different for each event.
If one person wrote all parts of the book, it was normal for the structure of the sentences and the atmosphere felt in the writing to be the same.
However, as Adalbert read the book, he noticed that the structure of the sentences and the breath of the writing were different for each event, and that there were also differences in the words used.
So he thought that this book was not written by one person but by many people.
“Well, I want you to hurry up and bring him. If you don’t, I’m going to feel a little bad.”
The old man felt his life his threatened by Adalbert’s answer
Adalbert’s words about feeling a little worse were not wasted.
If he didn’t call the real author, he felt like everyone gathered here would die.
Of course, there was another reason why Adalbert said he would feel bad.
