Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Final Stand
Lily's breath caught in her throat. She stared at her brother, his figure flickering between reality and something much darker. Her heart pounded as she scrambled to her feet, her body shaking with fear and adrenaline.
Ben took a staggering step forward, his hands clenched into fists. "Lily, you don't have much time," he whispered. "You have to break the cycle."
Lily's mind raced. "What cycle? What are you talking about?"
The shadows behind Ben twisted, taking form. The entity loomed over them, its presence suffocating. The whispering voice returned, wrapping around her like a cold wind.
"The past repeats, the deal continues. A price must be paid."
Lily shook her head violently. "No! I won't let this happen!"
Ben winced, his hands clutching his head as if something was tearing him apart from the inside. "It's inside me, Lily," he gasped. "It's trying to take over. You have to end this before it's too late."
Lily's eyes darted around the room, searching for a way out. But she knew deep inside—there was no escaping this. She had to face it.
She turned to the entity, her fists clenched. "What do you want?" she demanded.
The entity's shadowy tendrils curled around the room. "What was promised."
Lily's blood ran cold. Her mother's desperate deal, her father's sacrifice—it had all led to this moment.
"No," she said firmly. "I won't let you take anyone else."
The entity laughed, the sound sending a shiver down her spine. "Then offer something in return."
Lily's hands trembled. She had nothing left to give. Nothing but…
Herself.
Her eyes met Ben's, and in that instant, she understood. He had fought for her, for their family. Now, it was her turn.
She stepped forward. "Take me."
Ben's eyes widened. "Lily, no!"
The shadows surged forward, wrapping around her in an instant. Coldness seeped into her bones, the world around her darkening. But even as the entity's grasp tightened, she held on to one thought:
She had to end this.
Summoning every ounce of strength left in her, she whispered, "Let my family go."
The entity hesitated. The whispers grew louder, indecipherable. Then, as suddenly as it had come, the darkness recoiled. The room exploded in blinding light, forcing Lily to shut her eyes.
When she opened them, she was alone.
The shadows were gone. The house was silent.
And Ben was free.
He knelt beside her, tears streaming down his face. "Lily?"
She smiled weakly. "We did it."
The last whisper echoed through the empty house.
"A life is no longer loading."
