Chapter 43: An Invitation From Duke of Summer
Auren nodded. That was the appropriate thing to do, though it did not quench his and everyone else's curiosity. Especially Kenzo, who was dying to know. Auren, Granny, and Sable were more worried than impatient, though. Even if it was good news, it couldn't be a good thing for their family. Dante himself had said it best: 'Involving oneself with the noble class only brings misfortune to common people like them.'
Dante was actually very qualified to become a knight serving under Earls and even Dukes. But he had chosen the quiet life on purpose because of Sable and Auren himself. Dante was much more valuable than a simple Baron's knight. If he were just a simple blue crest knight, the Baron would have never agreed to give him a freebie in the last raid.
Dante could refuse Barons, and to some degree even the Counts and Viscounts, but an order from a higher-ranked noble than that—and he would have no choice but to go and at least listen to what the person had to say. The insignia of a coiled serpent on the seal of the parchment did not bode well with Sable, Auren, and Granny.
That was the insignia of the ruling family of the entirety of Greenvale—The Keeper House. Not of the Grove Keeper himself, though.
A coiled serpent wrapped around a sun disc, its scales burnished gold with fiery red veining. Its mouth was slightly open, exhaling rising heat waves. That was the insignia of the Duke of Summer.
What did a Duke of House Keeper have to say to a lowly knight living in the furthest end of Greenvale?
That afternoon none of them could sleep at all. How could they? Only Theren had a peaceful sleeping face with no care in the world. The guy had all his limbs sprawled open as if he were trying to take up as much space as he could.
Theren was not like him—Auren had checked and double-checked. He was a normal kid. Well, as normal as kids in this world could be. There was a weird connection between Maru and Theren—as if Maru was also trying his hardest in parenting little Theren. Granny and Dante smiled whenever they saw these moments of bonding. When he had asked if he was missing something, they had awkwardly revealed that a living summon could sense if a new member of the family was about to be born.
Meaning there was an 80% chance Theren too would have a fox as his summon. Auren was happy for the little guy—seeing the strength Maru provided Dante, Theren could become a great warrior in the future if he wanted to. Of course, it was a little awkward for his family to mention this thing when he was around—they must have thought he would feel jealous.
It would be a lie if Auren said he didn't want a cute and powerful pet himself, but that was no reason to feel jealous. He had played with Theren with utmost happiness when his family revealed the meaning behind Maru's extra affection. Once again his family was surprised by how abnormal he was—but this surprise was one of the good ones, and they stopped treating the subject as taboo around him. In the evening, Auren continued his practice, but he could barely focus. Sable too was absent-mindedly shaping the clay objects she was working on. Granny was a bit calmer than the two of them, but that was only from the outside—with age, she had mastered the technique of faking it. Auren hoped to gain her level of wisd.. no, acting skills.
With that level of calmness on her face, she was definitely a paid actor.
Even Kenzo, the most nervous among all four of them, had come to their house since 4 PM. Walking nervously all around Auren as if doing some magical ceremony, with weird noises that he produced in between. Auren had half a mind to point his sword in his direction.
At last, Dante came back, with dead prey hanging from the horseback as he, himself, walked freely holding the reins. After a lot of insistence from Granny, Sable, and Auren, Dante had finally agreed to use 3 gold coins out of the 20 Auren had given them to buy a beautiful black horse. Dante had bought it from the village, but it was far superior compared to even those sold in the town. They had seen the horse growing right before them in the village—it was a long-time necessity.
A knight needed to have a horse. Dante had finally agreed when Sable had told him it would be really useful in emergencies. Dante took it every day into the forest with him and Maru.
Once Dante had tied the horse in a small hut they had made for the majestic beast and removed his armor, washing his face and getting refreshed, Sable and Granny finally told him what had happened.
And as expected, seeing the seal on the parchment, Dante's face also showed complicated expressions. For over two minutes Dante just held the parchment, staring at it—not hurrying to open it at all. At last, when Kenzo lost his patience and started pacing around once again, which drew Dante's attention, and with a smile on his face seeing the silly look on Kenzo's and everyone's faces, he broke the seal and unfurled the parchment.
Auren too, not waiting anymore, walked behind Dante just as Sable did—all three of them reading it together.
It was an invitation.
An invitation from the Duke of Summer. For Dante to come to his dukedom and train under the best knight he had. It wasn't just for Dante—the Duke had called many other knights of renown from all regions of his Duchy. It was not mentioned anywhere, but the implication was simple.
The Duke of Summer was preparing to challenge another Duke. He was gathering all the knights he saw potential in training. That included even the Red Stag.
