Chapter 3: In the United States?
The neon lights of Tokyo were still visible in the distance as Ryoji stood frozen in the darkened control room, the haunting words echoing in his mind. "No. Not Akira." He glanced at the flickering terminal, the coordinates flashing on the screen, a puzzle that now felt far beyond his understanding. The Epoch was unraveling, and the warning about the time inversion rang in his ears.
But this... this was something different. Whoever was behind this had not only infiltrated the system but had somehow anticipated his every move.
Suddenly, the intercom crackled again, pulling Ryoji from his thoughts.
"Ryoji Tanaka," the voice said, icy and authoritative. "You don't understand the stakes. You have no idea what you're dealing with."
His heart raced. He knew that voice. But who could it be? And why were they so sure of his failure?
The silence hung in the air before the voice returned, softer this time, almost too casual. "You're going to need help, Ryoji. And you're not going to find it here."
Ryoji's breath hitched.
"Where?"
There was a pause, then, with a sense of finality, the voice replied: "In America. The Cyber Security Summit. They're expecting you."
The line went dead. Ryoji stood motionless, his pulse quickening. America. A place that, until now, felt so distant, both geographically and politically, was suddenly the next stage in his nightmare. What was this summit? And why was it now his only lead?
Ryoji grabbed the Epoch Stabilizer and, with one last glance at the now-dead terminal, rushed toward the exit. The clock was ticking. He had no time to waste.
Los Angeles, United States - The Cyber Security Summit
The year was 2038, and Los Angeles had long since become the global epicenter of cybersecurity. Towering glass skyscrapers housing the most influential companies in the world loomed over streets full of drivers, pedestrians, and augmented reality interfaces. Beneath the gleaming surface, however, the city thrummed with tensions, unseen networks of hackers, rogue AIs, and shadowy corporations all vying for control over the digital fabric of the world.
Ryoji arrived in LA, his mind still reeling from the conversation he had heard just hours earlier. After securing a flight under a pseudonym, he found himself stepping into a sprawling, high-tech convention hall. The air was thick with the scent of fresh coffee and anticipation. The Cyber Security Summit was in full swing, and the largest companies and brightest minds in the industry were in attendance. Their mission: to tackle the rapidly growing threats to digital security that were sweeping the world.
But Ryoji wasn't here to join in the discussion. He was here for answers.
As he walked through the massive conference floor, he saw groups of hackers, engineers, and analysts clustered around kiosks showcasing the latest in defensive tech: advanced firewalls, encryption algorithms, AI-driven security systems. It all seemed like a grand spectacle, the future of security laid out for all to see. But Ryoji had seen enough to know that not all of this was as innocent as it appeared.
He was meeting someone. A contact from his sister's network, someone who had promised to guide him to the truth.
After a few minutes of navigating the crowd, Ryoji found the designated meeting area, a small, private lounge tucked away from the main event. A woman stood by the door, her platinum blonde hair tied in a sleek ponytail, wearing a tight leather jacket that blended effortlessly with the sleek and polished tech surrounding her. She looked up as he approached, her dark, calculating eyes scanning him for any sign of weakness.
"You must be Ryoji Tanaka," she said, her voice smooth but firm. "I'm Maya Vermeulen. We have a lot to discuss."
Ryoji didn't waste time with pleasantries. "I need answers. Now."
Maya led him inside, where a series of holographic screens filled the air with data streams, reflecting everything from security breaches to global surveillance operations.
"You're in over your head, Tanaka," Maya said, her voice suddenly lower, almost warning. "What you're dealing with is bigger than the Epoch. Much bigger."
Ryoji's patience was running thin, but he kept his cool. "What do you know about the Epoch's collapse?"
Maya turned, her fingers deftly manipulating the floating displays. "The Epoch is just a symptom. The real problem lies in a hidden network of corporate and governmental entities that are using the instability of time manipulation to rewrite history. And they've known about the Epoch's deterioration for a lot longer than you think."
Ryoji's pulse quickened. "Who are they?"
Maya hesitated for a moment, her eyes narrowing as she glanced over at him. "We call them the Architects. They are a powerful cabal of tech moguls, cyber specialists, and rogue political forces who believe they can control the flow of time, and by doing so, reshape humanity as they see fit."
Ryoji felt a wave of dread wash over him. "The Architects? But… why America? Why am I here?"
Maya shrugged, a wicked grin forming on her face. "Because they're based here. And if you want to stop them, you'll need to get past their most secure facility. An AI fortress located deep in Nevada."
Ryoji swallowed hard. Nevada. A wasteland, but one that held the key to stopping the Architects. He wasn't sure if he was ready for what was to come, but there was no turning back now.
"We're going to need help," Maya continued, bringing up another screen filled with names and faces. "These are the top cybersecurity experts from around the world. Some of them are rogue hackers, others corporate defectors. We can bring them together, but it's risky. The Architects are already onto us."
Ryoji nodded. The road ahead was uncertain, and the risks were high, but he couldn't back down now. Not when the fate of time itself hung in the balance.
"Let's do it," he said, his voice steady. "I'll do whatever it takes to stop them."
Maya smiled, her expression colder now. "Good. Because we're going to need all the help we can get. The clock is ticking, Ryoji, and we're running out of time."
In that moment, Ryoji knew that the battle had only just begun. The Epoch's collapse was the beginning, but the true war was yet to come, and it would take everything he had to stop the Architects and restore balance to the fractured fabric of time.
