Chapter 171: The Rebel's Plot_3

....

Four days later, Rein set foot on the final stretch of his journey. In less than half a day's travel, after crossing this range of hills, he would arrive at Flashgold Town.

From the standpoint of territorial boundaries, Rein was already on the fringes of Flashgold Town.

Upon embarking on the path toward Flashgold Town, Rein felt a sense of solidity, and... an urge to share his joy with his parents.

They would never expect that in just a few days, they had become the parents of a Baron.

Thinking this, a smile involuntarily rose to the corners of Rein's mouth.

Flashgold Town.

A luxurious carriage stood parked at the doorstep of the Rein residence, flanked by two Cavalry guards at the front and back. Both the carriage and the breastplates of the Cavalry bore the noble crest, a Kite Shield adorned with a rose-like flower.

A slender noble girl stood dismayed in a white dress, stepping out from the Rein household and walking towards the carriage. The girl was none other than Jenny.

Soon after boarding, Jenny frowned and said to the noble lady inside the carriage, "Mother, Lord Rein still hasn't returned... The delivery deadline is approaching. What should we do?"

Although the Lady Crowley Baroness had weathered many storms, the current predicament left her unusually vexed.

As the Crowley family had grown wealthy through wine trading, they were overjoyed and saw it as a major business opportunity when several nobles from County Town requested a batch of top-level Bordeaux vintage.

However, just a few days prior, as the Crowley family prepared to transport this batch of Bordeaux vintage from the Eagle Federation from Fishing Port Town to County Town, it was unexpectedly hijacked.

The two family retainers who were responsible for the convoy, both of whom were the Crowley family's only remaining Knights in their forties or fifties, were left one dead and one critically injured.

When news of this first broke, it struck the Crowley Baroness like a bolt out of the blue!

Immediately after the incident, the Crowley Baroness and Jenny had made one trip to Rein's house, but returned in disappointment upon learning Rein had gone to Rosby City for his ennoblement examination.

Since 'Wild Wolf Hills' nearby was teeming with bandits, the Crowley Baroness had gone several times to both the City Guard and County Town's security office but failed to convince them to dispatch forces to extinguish the bandits and recover the goods.

When she sought to hire a mercenary group, she found not a single one in County Town capable of undertaking such a formidable task.

As the deadline loomed closer,

Should it arrive, the Crowley family would immediately need to pay double the goods' value in compensation to these nobles. It was no exaggeration to say this would severely wound the Crowley family's vitality.

"Perhaps, we must seek out Baron Alonso..." the Crowley Baroness's brows furrowed tightly. When she uttered these words, to Jenny, it sounded more like self-encouragement.

"Mother, let us wait a bit longer, who knows? Perhaps tomorrow Lord Rein will return," Jenny consoled.

She knew Alonso had always harbored ill intentions towards her mother.

If her mother sought him out, it would be tantamount to throwing herself into the tiger's den.

"Very well, we'll wait one more day; otherwise, even if Rein returns, it will be too late to recover the goods," the Crowley Baroness nodded, her worries still evident.

Normally, it wouldn't be such a coincidence to not be there today, and return the next.

Meanwhile, as Rein made his way along the narrow path, his eyes narrowed suddenly, he tugged at the reins, bringing his black horse to a halt.

He sensed something was off—about twenty to thirty meters ahead, on either side of the road, tens of people were hidden within the dense forest. Clearly, it was an ambush.

Though Rein didn't know if he was the target, he had no desire to find out what being ambushed felt like.

"Come out!" Rein called out sternly.

A few seconds passed.

Yet the opposition remained hidden in the forest, unresponsive.

However, Rein's acute perception detected the faint sound of 'sizzling,' and his level 3 'danger perception' began to warn him subtly.

He immediately realized what it meant and swiftly dismounted his warhorse, dashing into the nearby woods for cover.

Suddenly!

"Bang bang bang!" Multiple matchlock gunshots rang out.

This response ignited a flame of anger in Rein!

Seeing they had missed Rein, it seemed as though several people in the forest let out disappointed sighs.

Right after, a rustling sound ensued as a group of sturdy men wielding various weapons and dressed in chainmail and leather armor burst out of the forest.

Rein's gaze instantly fell on the four or five individuals holding matchlock guns, along with the four or five leading men clad in plate armor.

Indeed, matchlock guns!

Five Knights?

No, one seemed to be a Peak Knight...

But none of that mattered!

What mattered was Rein's mood had soured!

Anyone who is suddenly ambushed when nearly home would be in a foul temper.

Especially when the assailants employ a sneak attack!

Rein simultaneously drew the boarhead mace from his back while muttering something.

Shortly, light refracting in the air faintly revealed something different within a few meters around Rein's body.

It was the witchcraft 'High Temperature Field'!

In the next second, Rein charged out of the forest and directly toward his adversaries!

At that moment, only a satisfying spree of slaughter could quell Rein's wrath!
