Chapter 50: Air is so fresh
The police department sent word that after observing footage from four surveillance cameras along the route overnight, they finally identified a suspect. When the suspect was apprehended, he seemed to know exactly why he was being arrested and readily confessed to his actions.
This person was a well-known delinquent in the town, previously caught for petty thefts. Because he was a minor at the time, the police could only warn and detain him.
When Xi Tian arrived, he saw Korawa in an agitated state, nearly charging forward to beat up the delinquent. The delinquent, meanwhile, was lounging in a chair with his legs crossed, smugly saying, “He insulted me first and threatened me with my father. I just gave him a light hit. Who knew he was so weak and would die? It’s his own fault.”
This delinquent’s father was a retired soldier who divorced his partner to return to the military shortly after the delinquent was born. The soldier left the child with his parents, and though they disapproved of his son’s divorce, he doted on his only grandchild, spoiling him.
Despite being severely reprimanded and punished multiple times by his father, who had broken several canes in the process, the delinquent never mended his ways, instead mingling with other town bullies and picking up bad habits. In front of his grandfather, however, he was all sweet talk, leading the old man to believe “the child is too young to understand.”
Korawa, listening to the delinquent’s shameless remarks, was so infuriated that he tried to kick him but was restrained by the surrounding police.
Later, Xi Tian heard the full account of the incident from a police officer who was taking notes.
According to the delinquent, a mysterious person had paid him a large sum of money to retrieve Xi Tian’s hair or blood from his house and deliver it. Once the task was completed, the mysterious person would pay him another large sum.
Initially hesitant, the delinquent was swayed by the substantial amount of money. He had recently developed an expensive habit and desperately needed the cash. Believing that Xi Tian, being a short-term tenant and an off-world tourist, would prefer to avoid trouble and settle matters quietly, he agreed.
At the mention of the delinquent’s habit, the police officer’s face changed.
A few days before the incident, the delinquent had sneaked into Xi Tian’s house to scout it out, which explained the disarray that Ellis had noticed.
According to his own account, sneaking into houses, picking locks, and ransacking were his specialties, and he did them with ease.
That evening, as night fell, half the town had gone to a gathering at the east end. To his surprise, his flashlight wouldn’t turn on, so he had to use the electric lights to search around. However, the house was too neatly organized, and he found nothing.
Just as he was about to leave, Rutherford opened the door and came in, asking, “Is there anyone inside? Why are you back so early and didn’t even close the door?”
Xi Tian recalled that his landlord had once reminded him about forgetting to lock the door.
When Rutherford entered, he saw the town’s infamous troublemaker rummaging through his tenant’s house, making a mess. Already disliking idle youth, he was even more infuriated seeing this one stealing right under his nose. Angrily, he scolded, “You wretched kid, if it weren’t for your elders, how could our small town tolerate you? Look at what you’re doing, ruining your father’s reputation. I can’t believe how such an honorable old man could raise a little thief like you. Just wait, I’m going to tell the mayor and have you kicked out in front of the whole town!”
The thug said, “I was both shocked and furious at the time. I desperately held onto him. If my father found out, he would have killed me. Besides, if he really exposed this, how could I face people afterward?
I felt a surge of anger in my chest. At that moment, I lost my mind and grabbed whatever was at hand and hit him with it. By the time I came to my senses, he was already on the ground. I took that moment to run away.”
Korawa was crying uncontrollably beside him.
“How dare you! Do you know that when you hit him, he was still alive? But you ran away. He woke up and crawled forward but couldn’t find anyone to help him, and then he died of a heart attack. How dare you kill him just for your ridiculous pride! My brother had such a hard life, always giving the best to me. And now, because of a scumbag like you, he died when he was finally happy. How dare you! What right do you have! You’re worse than an animal!”
Suddenly, Korawa burst into a rage, kicking the thug and his chair to the ground. He mounted him and started punching, each blow landing with brutal force. His cries and accusations roared from his lungs.
The thug began to wail like a ghost. At first, he was defiant, saying, “He brought it on himself,” but as he couldn’t hold out any longer, he started crying, “Grandpa, save me.”
This time, no one intervened. Everyone present silently turned their faces away, tacitly allowing Korawa’s actions.
Xi Tian stood with his arms crossed, coldly watching the scene. His mind was now entirely focused on who had hired someone to go to his house just to get his hair and blood. Was this the same person behind his departure from his home planet?
Thinking this, a chill ran through him, as if a winter snowstorm had settled in his heart.
As he left the police station, he asked Kang Ran to carefully inquire about the mysterious person.
Ellis received an invitation from Bill to visit his house.
Bill’s home was a two-story villa. The furniture arrangements and potted plants inside showed that the owner had once put a lot of thought into the decor. Now, however, it bore the marks of time, giving it a strangely desolate feel.
Ellis had been to Bill’s house before with two other close friends. They would have afternoon tea together, chatting about the latest gossip and news.
Bill was usually a very kind person, whether to friends or family. His eyes always held a gentle look when he gazed at his husband, who was half a head shorter than Bill, resembling a fragile bean sprout.
In the one impression Ellis had of him, Bill’s husband was stiff during their intimate interactions and actively avoided Bill’s gaze, not making eye contact.
At that time, the two other females with Ellis seemed used to this. They smiled and greeted Bill’s husband before continuing their conversation.
Ellis sensed that the females in this town treated their male husbands no differently than inanimate objects; their love was reserved for their children. Couples like Korawa and his sub-female, who shared deep affection, were rare. Apparently, Bill and his husband once had a loving relationship like that.
In the large living room, only Bill and Ellis were present, creating an unusual silence that made Ellis uncomfortable.
“Why is it just the two of us today? Isn’t it not our usual afternoon tea day?” Ellis laughed to ease the awkwardness.
Bill looked haggard today, his usual charm absent.
“Did something happen to you? You look exhausted.”
“My husband wants a divorce. He still can’t forgive me for the miscarriage years ago,” Bill said, beginning to sob.
“Have you tried talking to him?”
“I’ve begged him for everything, but it doesn’t work. He just won’t forgive me. I left my home to be with him here, and now he wants to divorce me over this. What did I do to deserve this?” Bill cried.
Ellis handed him a tissue.
“I know the people here look down on me. They think I’m not worthy of their males and that our relationship is a joke. But we lived happily together for three years. How can he just throw me away like that? And for that 20-year-old bastard.”
“It’s not a big deal. He’s just a male. If he can find someone else, so can you! That’ll teach him!” Ellis, not good at comforting others, tried to console Bill.
“It’s impossible. There’s no one else like him who will treat me well,” Bill said, his eyes brimming with tears.
“So what are you going to do?” Ellis was completely at a loss, unsure why Bill had called him over just to listen to his complaints.
“My husband said he would give me another chance if I could get pregnant,” Bill said, holding Ellis’s hand tightly and looking at him with hopeful eyes. “You’re my good brother, right?”
“What do you mean?” Ellis laughed awkwardly, trying to pull his hand away, but Bill’s grip was firm.
“I want to borrow your male for a night. Just one night, okay?”
Ellis’s expression changed instantly. He tried to pull his hand back, but Bill held on tightly.
“Just one night. Bring your male over, and when we’re together, you can step out for a bit. I’ll handle the rest. After that, your male might feel guilty and treat you even better.”
Ellis couldn’t take it anymore. He forcefully pulled his hand back and said, “What nonsense are you talking about?!”
Ellis’s voice was so loud that it stunned Bill into silence for a moment.
But soon, Bill’s eyes filled with tears again. “Help me, please. We’re both outsiders in this small town; you must understand my situation. I beg you.”
Ellis stood up. “You are disgusting!”
Seeing Ellis’s reaction, Bill laughed.
“Which male doesn’t want to have an affair? If it were someone else, they might demand your male marry them, but I would never interfere in your marriage. Be realistic, Ellis. Think about it. You’ll receive your male’s guilt-driven affection, and I’ll win back my husband’s heart. Once I have a child, he will definitely come back. We are both females; why make things harder for each other?”
“I was wrong, Bill. You’re not just disgusting; you’re absolutely repulsive!” Ellis coldly spat out.
“I don’t need your concern for matters between my male and me. You should worry more about your impending divorce!” Ellis said.
Bill’s face turned pale.
“Considering the friendship we’ve had over the past three months, let me give you some advice: do you know why your husband wants a divorce?” Ellis took a deep breath. “Bill, you’ve lost yourself for the sake of a male.”
“Aren’t you the same? You follow him around like a dog every day, yet you don’t even have an official status. How are you any better than me?” Bill stood up, tears in his eyes, but still aggressive.
“I’m not like you, Bill. My male is my choice. But you, you don’t even have a choice.” Ellis stepped out of the house, feeling the outside air had never been so fresh.
