Chapter 16: Can You Hear Me?
The spiral was intense, flames flickering around her, burning wherever it landed. Erenyx gritted her teeth, "Loretta! You better wake your ass up! I can't do this shit alone!" She put up her twin axes in defense, crossing them, her eyes locked onto Eldryis, her gaze never wavering.
The screeching of metal on metal was ear piercing, disorienting. The sound was enough to awaken Loretta suddenly, but he was different, in a trance-like state, his eyes seemed void of any sort of awareness, yet he still knew what was happening around him, his eyes were different, sparkling.
Eldryis's vortex began to slow, Erenyx took that chance to repel her back, throwing one of her axes as a follow-up, distracting Eldryis for just a second as she countered it. "C'mon bastard!" She shouted, caving in the floor under her with a loud bang as she jumped and charged towards Eldryis.
A beautiful hum starts to surround her with her body glowing with essentia.
Erenyx spun her body with immense speed, blue essentia forged butterfly wings sprung from her back as she landed a brutal punch into the liver area of the gorgon, smashing some of Eldryis's ribs. The crunch was brutal, it happened all at once so it sounded like one sickening snap. "Butterfly Blow!" She shouted, both her and Eldryis now falling to the floor, the gorgon's face contorted in both pain and anger.
Eldryis tried to stab Erenyx in her stomach, but something small, sparkling like a miniature star drifted beautifully with an eerie hum in front of the path of her spear, and as the spear came into contact with it–
BOOM.
A massive explosion sent Eldryis flying back into a wall with a bang and sent Erenyx sprawling towards Loretta. Loretta had hundreds of those star-like objects floating around him, the 8-pointed star on his forehead shining brightly.
The objects were floating around him freely, unbound by anything but the invisible force that didn't allow them to stray too far from Loretta.
Erenyx rose to her feet, forming and brandishing both of her axes in each hand, ready to fight again, more determined than ever.
"No, stay put for now I don't know if these… stars will hurt you." It was Loretta's voice, yet his mouth didn't move, it echoed throughout the entire dungeon like room, it was unnatural. Erenyx looked towards him, turning her head slightly, "Ya sure retta?" He nodded calmly before walking towards Eldryis, who was still clutching at her now badly bruised side.
Each one of the stars orbiting Loretta had their own hum, all different yet not drastically enough to become unpleasant to listen to, yet the hum still made you sweat. Uncomfortable. Scared.
"D-Don't come any closer!" Eldryis's calm demeanor was replaced by one of anger and agony, tears running down her face in a disgusting plea for mercy, but Loretta's stride didn't stop, he walked closer and closer to her.
She had stooped lower into sobbing, snot drooling from her nose and tears running down her face with a quicker pace, like a disgusting waterfall.
He stopped once he stood directly above her crouching down and staring the gorgon deep into her eyes.
"You disgust me."
"You aren't strong."
"You play with the minds of the weak."
"You are not worthy to be one of The Devil's Fingers."
Each word struck her as hard as the blow Erenyx landed to her side, twisting her face more and more into pure anger. "You know nothing you damn child! So don't speak as if you know anything about me!" she screamed as she tried to swing her spear at Loretta, but before it could come into contact with him, a loud clunk was heard as Erenyx's axe intercepted its path.
Erenyx had quickly propelled herself to where the two were, bracing her weapon with essentia before blocking the strike.
"Think again bitch."
Eldryis began to breathe harder and harder, her anger turning into panic as she let out a bloodcurdling scream, Erenyx dashes back while Loretta still sat there crouched in front of her, his eyes still piercing through her.
"Loretta!"
Eldryis whipped her tail at Loretta, the obsidian scales glistening and shimmering as the limb came barreling towards Loretta. Before the tail could come into contact with him, Loretta grabbed one of the stars floating around him, pulling his hand back and landing a devastating hook into Eldryis's jaw.
BANG.
Her jaw hung unnaturally, broken.
Erenyx noticed how much more confident he's gotten since he woke up, this power, she had seen a glimpse of it in his eyes yet she didn't know it would be this powerful. He's conscious yet she doesn't believe that he really knows what he is doing.
Something is wrong.
"Is this really all you have? So disappointing for someone chosen by The Devil."
The blood dripping from the hinges of her jaw pooled below her, her eyes completely filled with fear.
"Loretta, are you okay in there?" Erenyx asked, her voice a little shaky and her usual confident tone isn't there. Loretta slowly turns his head, looking at Erenyx with his sparkling eyes, "I feel better than ever Erenyx." The way he said it just didn't feel right, and this time instead of his voice echoing through the room, he spoke through his mouth with a weird almost scary tone.
Erenyx shuddered a little bit, her instincts told her not to get closer, they told her not to move an inch.
Erenyx always moved by instinct, they were almost animal-like, and this time she wasn't going to disobey them.
Loretta turned back to face the gorgon, her eyes hazed and falling in and out of conciseness, he tilted his head while looking at her, grabbing her by the snakes she had for hair and bringing her face closer to his. "Fucking look at me." Those words snapped her back into an aware state, trying to use her eyes to bring him back into an unstable part of his mind but it did nothing, he isn't awake.
"Don't turn away. You don't deserve the mercy of fear."
