Chapter 4: Trade Anniversary
"I did not answer his question, I only chuckled. For some reason the farmer hated my me, I wondered why he agreed that I should be driving his bike. I did not think that it was personal since I had those type of grudges with many elderly people around the village. After his boys had finished packing, I gave bid the farmer a farewell.
All the farmer's were telling me the same thing they did every other year before, they kept reminding me that on that day they finished working early so I had to be early too. It was my sleeps fault that I was always late that day, so if they were to give repeated lectures to someone it was supposed to be my sleep.
It was a long drive through the forest which took about half an hour. I was stepping on the accelerator with everything I had under my foot. The way the forest opened it's path varied , if I was lucky it was fast enough to match the speed of the bike and that took about twenty minutes to reach the market and that day I was lucky. I did not take too long at the market in about an hour I was back home ready to start preparing for the next day the day of the anniversary."
It was finally the day of the anniversary, the day that we had to wait the whole year for it. That year's decorations had made the village beautiful than all the previous years combined. It was always like that, each year our enthusiasm grew bigger that everything grew with it including our taste of fashion, delicacy foods and traditional dances. It was a day off for everyone but for those who wanted to satisfy their customers , opened their shops in the morning hours only.
It was the sixth of the first month and on that day Solitaria, the leader of the Balanor an Elite task force, that provided security in the village had gone to the capital of Ecade. They had proposed their Elite task force to be added to the Hands. So the Commander had called them to showcase their power so that he would see if they were worthy of being part of the Hands. Only twenty percent of the men were present inside the village making that the potential day for a massive invasion in Veilkin give the attackers knew about.
The village had a little spaces since most of it was occupied with houses and gardens. But we were partying like their was a void around us not caring about the smaller room that was around us. The dancing was done after a morning gathering at the village square. Everyone gathered there and the elders talk about different things. They talked about how far we have come and discussed how we were going to solve problems which were arising. For the first time, their was a guest of honor on the occasion. He gave his captivating speech appreciating that we chose to share our good quality raw materials the world has never seen.
For an outside to get in the village, he had to be with the person wearing the ring and the path that the forest opened was big enough to fit about three people walking side by side. Thauzen a friend of Mtendere was the one who brought the guest of honor, he had proposed that he entered the village since he was a wealthy investor who wanted to advance price our crops at a very higher price. Mtendere and Thauzen meet at the FAC and they both failed to enlist in the hands. Mtendere switched to a business college and Thauzen was honing his combat skills inorder to have another try.
The party begun in the late afternoon, we light a bonfire and danced around it. Their was Gule Wamkulu, a traditional dance of people who wore costumes and danced to the drums together with the songs that we sang. I had danced a lot and I took a break to grab a drink. It was nice seeing all the people that much happy and it made the village a better place. My excitement ended up when a frog sat on my left foot. In the country, getting in contact with a toad or a frog was considered bad luck. I was the person who did not believe in any of this, yet this day I downgraded from the most excited person to the least. The atmosphere became eerie, I felt like telling telling all of the people to run away but who would have believed me, I hardly believed myself. They would have thought that it was a prank even if I included about the frog, they would have put into consideration the hate I had towards believes since I was young.
I was not the intuitive person who felt a bad thing coming in the future even though nature had showed me the signs, I found it hard to believe. If I had done something in preparation for a bad thing that might happen in the future, it was because I heard rumours of the dangers of some place I wanted to adventure. In fact years before, I heard that most cities were filled with ruthless evil people and one had to be able to defend themselves. So I took the precaution measure and got myself a mentor. The child of Mtendere , he was way younger than me but was as powerful as a 1st Class Junior Finger. My classes with him were mostly during the night but most of the times I escaped them because he was hard on me than how a bloodthirsty killer could have been.
My head begun to hurt from all of that unsettling atmosphere and I was overthinking about the whole situation. I decided to go home to sleep a little. Everyone was triggered to see me leaving the party that early because when it came to it, I partied until the party was no more without even taking taking that much of a breaks.
" Bro, is something wrong " John asked me
" My head hurts a little , so am going to sleep a little "
" Alright but you will miss the fun "
" I won't take too long to come back"
I carried on to my house which was about 525 meters from the village square. I did not even notice who was speaking to me. My mother, sister and the others who were living with us were outside the fence having their little party and they did not notice me shuffling into the the house. I went into the house heading straight into the boys bedroom. Before I could open the door, I begun to hear muffled screams coming from the south just beyond the village square and near the Mtendere Mansion. The mansion was built for Mtendere as a reward for the change he had made in the village from the elders.
I thought that they were screaming because the Gule had scared the shit out of them. Little by little the screams were getting loud, whatever was scaring the people was moving towards the village square. I went to the window which faced the south to see clearly what was really happening. "
