Chapter 36: 36
Karen Splitz had led a good life since she was converted back in the fifties, when she was twenty-six. Power, nightlife, authority, she had enjoyed all of that during those years, and in these last ten in Barcelona she had enjoyed all of that and also a certain autonomy and fun.
Like most large cities, the capital of Catalonia was divided into neighborhoods, each under the control of a faction. Spain belonged to the countries affiliated with the Uthard council, they were civilized, they respected each other, they only fed on the cattle that the council allowed them to corrupt, three humans per offspring, until the human's mind was so weak that it was worth killing the slave rather than keeping it.
She had two companions, at least she had had them until now, but they had been humiliated, attacked and defeated by a simple human, her master would not be happy, she had to flee, flee from that absurd human and flee from her life, from her nest, her master would kill her, she was sure of it.
The best thing would be Africa, there she could find a new hunting ground in the chaos that was the Savath, she didn't like being without a leader, without support, but it was better than death.
Karen walked as fast as she could to Sans station, she had to get to her refuge in Traverse de las Corts quickly. She would miss her life of luxury. But she had the ominous feeling that she was being followed, it had to be impossible, she accelerated as fast as possible through the safe areas where there were no cameras or people. No human should be able to follow a vampire, neither in speed nor with the trail, they did not have the sense of smell of a vampire. But she could not shake that feeling off.
The trail of that human had been lost in the foothills of the mountain, camouflaged among the wind that blew from the tibidabo and that announced an imminent storm. She reached the block where her luxury apartment was and entered through the back gardens. She didn't want to draw attention to herself or take a detour. With each step she felt more pressured. She heard a noise behind her and turned around only to see a cat running away through the gardens.
It was relaxing for her to sit on those benches at night, smoking a cigarette and looking at the stars, but that night, the plants, the dirt paths that all the communities had fixed with such care seemed like a nightmare.
She knew there were cameras, so she couldn't go faster, nor dematerialize. She was walking the last few meters to the tunnel that would allow her to cross to Traverser de las Corts when the rain began to fall around her. The storm seemed just about to break.
Karen opened the gate that gave access to the tunnel while looking behind her, but she couldn't see anything in the plants, in the trees, in the cars parked further down the street, only rain and the wind.
She arrived as best she could, nervous and trembling, to the main avenue, and began to look for her keys to enter her block. She was so tense and nervous that they fell to the floor. How could this happen to her because of a simple human? She was a legitimate vampire and the simple cattle but she was afraid, that guy had killed her two companions in a matter of minutes and surely part of the cattle that had cost her so much to raise. It was inconceivable, she opened the door of the block and dematerialized to appear directly at the door of the nearest elevator.
The doors opened, she had been lucky, she was on the ground floor, or so she thought, because she did not have time to check if the door of the block had closed completely. Had she heard the door close? She was so nervous that she did not know.
The elevator slowly climbed the six floors, she leaned against the wall of the elevator ready to face whatever was waiting for her when the doors opened but when this happened she only saw her empty landing. There were no other noises in the building she was sure. Now that he had stopped, he could tell that there was nothing on the stairs. Not a footstep, not a single human heartbeat.
She opened the door to her apartment more calmly, went inside, she had until the next night to pack her things and leave, but the door never closed, when she was about to push it and lock it someone pushed the door with such force that it was she who was thrown back, when she looked up there he was.
Wet and terrible looking at her with his almost two meters of height, he had a sinister smile on his face.
"But how? I haven't heard your heart, I haven't smelled you, how have you followed me? If you are a vampire why do you attack us?"
At that moment, like an absurd demonstration, the boy's heart that had been beating a second before stopped, but the boy advanced as if nothing had happened. She was horrified, she was sure that he was human, that in the discotheque his heart beat, that when he ran he gave off an odor, and that when they fought she could notice his adrenaline, his pulse accelerated by the fight, although it was true that she never smelled fear in him. But now it was as if everything had disappeared. It didn't smell the same, the boy was laughing. The boy's heart started beating again, at that moment she saw it, the boy's shirt wasn't his, the rest of his body was soaked and camouflaged with the smell of shit that splashed his clothes. He had tricked her, he must have been very expert to be able to mislead her like that, but that didn't explain his strength that was on a different magnitude than when they fought, nor the fact that he could control his heart at will.
"Surprised?" Well, don't make that face and let's think about the next steps. If you attack me, I'll beat you so badly that you'll beg me to kill you. If you resist, I'll beat you to death with blows. If you try to run away, I'll hunt you down again. Think about it. I only want answers and you want to pack your things and run away from this city and from me. You can do this the easy way or the hard way. It's your choice."
Karen tried to get up to fight, even if it was the last one, but the silver-ringed fist hit her mercilessly in the face, throwing her two meters back. When she reacted again, he was already on top of her, his knee on her chest, crushing her. The knife made a cut on Karen's cheek.
"Are you going to behave or do I have to train you a little more?"
In the end, the girl gave in, even if it was to get out of that position in which it was impossible for her to act.
"How do I know I can trust you, that you won't kill me as soon as I tell you what you want to know?"
"You don't know, that's life, you play your cards and I might kill you or maybe I'll let you go, I don't have anything against you, be clear about that, let's say that if your partner hadn't been an idiot you'd all still be alive, but chance is a treacherous bitch, let's start with the basics, what's your name, what's your clan, and who's the master in charge in Barcelona?"
The first two questions weren't important, but revealing the name of the master of her clan stationed in Barcelona was something unthinkable, if it was discovered that she had spoken they would chase her to the other side of the world if necessary.
"My name is Karen Splitz, I am a Markovitz, I can't answer the rest and you know it..."
However, Pablo's face must have been a poem, because when he heard the name of that unknown clan he couldn't help but notice that he didn't know what he was talking about. She noticed the doubt on his face.
"Don't you know our clan, what cave did you come out of?"
"I think you're going to have to explain a lot of things to me..."
Karen noticed that she was gaining strength in the negotiation, maybe she could get out of this alive.
"Quid pro quo handsome boy, quid pro quo"
The girl got up when Pablo got off of her and went to the liquor cabinet and poured herself a double whiskey.
"Do you want one? The night has been hard, and it looks like it's going to be long."
