Chapter 2: Chapter 02 - How Far?
Lucas had just poured himself a cup of instant coffee when a loud knock on the door startled him.
Knock, knock, knock!
"Lucas! I know you're in there!" came the voice of a woman from the other side.
Lucas recognized it right away—Mrs. Evelyn Foster, the landlord of his apartment building. A sharp-looking, middle-aged woman with neatly styled blonde curls and striking red lips. She had a reputation for being strict and unrelenting.
With a long sigh, Lucas walked to the door. "Great… here we go again," he muttered under his breath. Opening the door, he was met with Evelyn's piercing glare.
"Lucas, your rent for this month is already two days late. You know the rules, don't you?" she said sweetly, though her tone was anything but forgiving.
Lucas scratched his head awkwardly. "Sorry, Mrs. Foster. I forgot… but I actually have the money this time."
Evelyn's eyebrows shot up in surprise, followed by a thin, curious smile. "Oh, really? Normally, you're all about excuses. Well, let's see it then."
Lucas pulled out his phone and opened his banking app, double-checking his balance—still a solid $10,000. Doing some quick math in his head, he decided to pay off three months in one go, which came to about $6,300. Typing in the amount, he transferred the money to Evelyn's account.
"All done," he said, holding up his phone to show the proof of transfer.
Evelyn squinted at the screen suspiciously, then pulled out her own phone to check her account. Her expression shifted as soon as she saw the funds had gone through. She looked pleased but also… curious.
"Where'd you get this kind of money, Lucas?" she asked, her voice tinged with a teasing edge as her sharp eyes studied him.
Lucas shrugged. "Just got lucky, I guess."
But Evelyn's gaze lingered, and something about it felt… off. Her smile grew wider as she took a small step closer, standing just a little too near for comfort.
"You know, Lucas," she said, twirling a strand of her hair, "if you ever need anything… anything at all, you can always come see me at my place." Her tone was dripping with suggestion, and the way she looked at him made his skin crawl.
Lucas instinctively stepped back, trying to put some distance between them. Before he could come up with a polite way to decline, a small holographic screen appeared in the corner of his vision.
[ Passive Skill – Charm of the Forbidden activated. Target meets criteria. ]
Lucas froze. "So this is what Charm of the Forbidden is about?" he thought, piecing it together. It was suddenly crystal clear—Evelyn fit the description of an "unfaithful wife" from the skill's details. And now, thanks to the system, she was inexplicably attracted to him.
He cleared his throat and forced an awkward smile. "Uh… thanks, Mrs. Foster. But I think I'll be fine for now."
Evelyn's smile lingered, her lips curling just slightly as she bit her lower lip. "Well, that's a shame. But the offer's always open, Lucas." With that, she turned around and strutted off, swaying her hips in an exaggerated manner.
The second she was out of sight, Lucas shut the door and leaned against it, exhaling deeply as he tried to collect himself.
"I really need to be careful with this skill," he muttered, shaking his head. "It's not just trouble—it's a magnet for people like Evelyn."
He sat back down at his desk, staring at the still-active holographic display in front of him.
[ First Task Completed. Rewards: 100 XP, 50 Points, 1 Spin Token earned. ]
Lucas snorted. "At least I'm getting something out of it."
Taking a sip of his coffee, he stared into the mug, lost in thought. With skills and a system like this, his life had definitely taken a turn. But whether it was for the better or worse… he still couldn't tell.
---
Lucas stared at the holographic screen hovering in front of him, a mix of curiosity and confusion swirling in his mind. After what had just happened with Mrs. Foster, he couldn't deny it any longer—his life had officially turned into something straight out of a video game.
He sighed and spoke up, "Okay, system… or whatever you are. This is real, right? I mean, I'm not dreaming or hallucinating here?"
The mechanical voice from earlier responded, calm and precise:
[ The system is real. The intervention you experienced is neither an illusion nor a dream. You have been chosen as the Host of the Ultimate Spin System. Congratulations on this opportunity. ]
Lucas rubbed his temple. "Ultimate Spin System? So, what, I just spin some wheel and hope for something good? Like a lottery?"
[ Correct. The Wheel of Fortune is one of the system's main features. However, the system also includes other elements that will reveal themselves as you progress—such as levels, tasks, rewards, and adaptive features. ]
Crossing his arms, Lucas asked, "Why me? Out of everyone in the world, why did you pick me?"
[ Hosts are selected based on a unique algorithm that evaluates the following factors:
1. A life full of struggle with little to no payoff.
2. High potential for maximizing opportunities.
3. A moral balance that allows for flexible decision-making.
You met all the criteria. ]
Lucas raised an eyebrow. "A moral balance? So… you're saying I'm not too good but not too bad either?"
[ Precisely. You have a highly opportunistic nature but retain enough core values to act as the situation requires. ]
Lucas let out a long sigh, then asked, "Alright, let's say I buy into this. But you just dropped all of this on me without warning. What happens next? Is this going to keep going forever?"
[ The system remains active for as long as you are the Host. There is no time limit unless the system is revoked, which can only happen if you explicitly reject the role. ]
Narrowing his eyes, Lucas pressed, "And if I reject it? What happens then?"
[ All skills and benefits will be revoked, and additional consequences may occur depending on your status at the time of rejection. ]
Lucas chewed on his lip. "So it's like a contract with no easy way out, huh?"
[ You could see it that way. However, note that the system is designed to turn your life into something extraordinary. How you use it is entirely up to you. ]
After a moment of silence, Lucas nodded, feeling slightly reassured by the sense of control he still had. But there was one question that bugged him the most.
"Alright, this might sound weird, but… why did I get a skill like Charm of the Forbidden? Couldn't it have been something more normal or… useful?"
The system responded in its usual neutral tone:
[ Skills are assigned based on the Host's psychological profile and unique potential situations. Charm of the Forbidden is designed to leverage social interactions in ways that benefit you. While it may seem unconventional, the skill is highly flexible when used creatively. ]
Lucas frowned. "So you're saying I should use it to… manipulate people? Like, what, seduce some sugar mommies?"
[ How you choose to use the skill is entirely up to you. The system provides tools; their application is your responsibility. ]
Leaning back in his chair, Lucas ran a hand through his hair. "So I'm basically a project for this system. Like an NPC being given free will?"
[ That analogy is inaccurate. However, you are indeed a part of the system's broader mechanism. Ultimately, control over your life remains in your hands. ]
Lucas rubbed his face and sighed again. "Alright. Guess I don't have much of a choice but to roll with it. I mean, I've got cash to survive now, but I still want to know… how far can this system actually take me?"
The system didn't answer directly. Instead, it left him with one final message before the holographic display faded away:
[ That depends entirely on you, Host - Lucas Cross. Good luck. ]
Lucas stared into the empty space where the screen had been, trying to process everything. On one hand, this felt like a dream come true. But on the other, he knew dreams like this always came with a price.
"Alright, Ultimate Spin System," he muttered with a faint smirk. "Let's see how far I can take this game."
