Chapter 14: Chapter 14 - About Stepmom

After Lucas stormed out, still dying of embarrassment, he flopped back onto the couch. His eyes drifted to the ceiling of their tiny apartment. Lena's laughter echoed in his ears, mixing with the shame and regret swirling in his chest.

"Why is my life like this?" Lucas muttered under his breath.

He tried to calm himself, but his thoughts wandered to the past—to a time when everything felt simpler. Before all this chaos, life wasn't nearly as complicated.

Lucas remembered it vividly—his childhood. His mother had died in a tragic car accident when he was only seven. That day marked a turning point in his life. His dad became a different man—quieter, more withdrawn. As a kid, Lucas didn't fully understand what was happening, but one thing was clear: their house had become eerily silent.

Everything shifted when a woman named Maya—Lena's mom—entered their lives. Maya was charming, with a warm smile that could make anyone feel at ease. She often brought Lena, who was just a little girl at the time. Their first meeting was awkward, but over time, Lucas and Lena grew close.

Lena was always bubbly, bringing color to Lucas's otherwise gray days. They'd play together in the yard, laughing without a care in the world. Lucas cherished Lena's laughter, so pure and genuine. Yet behind all that joy, young Lucas had no idea what was really going on.

Maya wasn't just there to help out with Lucas; she was also getting closer to his dad. At first, Lucas didn't think much of it. He was just happy the house wasn't so quiet anymore. But one day, his dad dropped a bombshell that changed everything.

"Lucas," his dad said gently, "Maya and Lena are going to move in with us. Maya and I are getting married."

Young Lucas was confused but happy. He liked Maya and Lena, so the idea of them becoming a family sounded great. Back then, it all seemed so perfect.

But as Lucas hit puberty, things got... complicated. He started seeing Maya differently. She was young, with curves that made it hard for him not to notice. Compared to his dad, who was much older and less... impressive, Maya seemed out of place as a stepmom. Lucas often felt guilty for having inappropriate thoughts about her. But no matter how hard he tried, his mind kept wandering there—especially during those lonely nights in his room, armed with tissues.

Lucas overheard gossip about Maya's past. She was from a bustling city life full of glitter and chaos. She had a wild, reckless streak and made some bad decisions. Lena, as it turned out, was the product of a fling with someone who had never stepped up. The "he went to buy milk" story Maya told Lena was a convenient lie to cover the bitter truth.

Lucas couldn't wrap his head around why Maya would fall for his dad—a much older man with nothing extraordinary about him. But as he grew older, he pieced it together: his dad was lonely but financially stable, while Maya was a stunning single mom looking for security.

Yet, despite everything, Maya wasn't all bad. She genuinely cared for Lucas and Lena, treating them with equal affection. Lucas, for all his internal conflicts, couldn't hate her. Maya had made his life a little brighter, even after losing his mom.

"Lucas!" Lena's voice snapped him out of his thoughts.

He looked toward the bedroom door. Lena stood there, eyebrows raised in confusion. "What are you daydreaming about? I've been calling you forever."

"Nothing," Lucas said, sitting up on the couch. "Just thinking about the past."

Lena frowned. "The past? Don't tell me you're still hung up on that weird video earlier?"

Lucas groaned. "Can we not talk about that? I'm serious."

Lena walked over and perched on the armrest of the couch. "If something's bothering you, just say it. I'm here, okay?"

Lucas looked at her, holding back a small smile. Annoying as she was, Lena was the one constant in his life. He was grateful for her, even if their relationship was full of petty arguments.

"I was just thinking about when we were kids. About us, about Mom…" Lucas trailed off, unsure whether to continue.

Lena's expression softened. "Mom always said we're siblings, even if we're not blood-related. And I'm glad you're in my life, big bro. So stop beating yourself up, okay? Even if you are a walking failure."

Lucas rolled his eyes, half-annoyed, but deep down, he knew he couldn't stay mad at her.

Later that night, Lucas lay on the couch, idly scrolling through videos on his phone. Life hacks, cooking tips, random challenges—everything blurred together. At first, it was distracting enough, but eventually, the boredom crept back in.

"Why is my life so dull?" he muttered, rubbing his forehead. He glanced at the corner of his screen: 8:47 PM. Somehow, the day had already slipped away.

Yawning, Lucas opened his messaging app. He scrolled to an old text from his dad containing a few photos. Reluctantly, he tapped one—a picture from Lena's high school graduation a few months back. Lena stood in the middle, wearing her school uniform and grinning ear to ear. Maya stood beside her, dressed modestly but… well, not modestly enough, her boobs enough to make little Lucas get hard down there.

Lucas's gaze lingered on Maya longer than it should have. Her hair was perfectly styled, her soft smile glowing, and the way her dress hugged her figure...

"Ugh, what's wrong with me?" Lucas muttered, shutting off the screen and tossing his phone aside. He buried his face in his hands, but Maya's image was still burned into his brain. He cursed himself for even thinking about her like that.

Then, out of nowhere, a familiar mechanical voice echoed in his head.

[System Notification]

Host, even a simple photo can spark your dirty imagination? Is this your idea of personal growth?

Note: It seems your brain is working harder than your lazy body.

---

Lucas groaned, lifting his head in frustration. "Oh, great. You again. I really don't need a lecture right now."

The system replied in its usual mocking tone.

---

[System Response]

You must be truly bored, Host. No job, no purpose, and now you're spending your free time on… that. Very productive.

---

Lucas ran a hand through his hair, annoyed. "Shut up. I wasn't— It wasn't like that. I just… accidentally looked at the photo, okay?"

---

[System Response]

Oh? Accidentally stared at your stepmom photo for over 10 seconds, too? Host, you might want to revise your definition of "accidental."

---

Lucas sighed heavily, trying to ignore the system's increasingly humiliating commentary. He knew it wouldn't stop until he responded.

"What do you want?" he finally asked, sounding defeated.
