Chapter 18: Race against him
And soon he won by around 40 seconds. This time might seem too small, not even a minute. What's that great about winning by barely a minute, right?
Wrong, in this racing world, 40 seconds were more than 40 minutes. It wasn't only about racing, this counts on other aspects as well.
A second is enough to save some from an accident or to get into an accident. The room filled up with cheers but gasps were heard as well.
Lots of people couldn't believe that the number one racer lost. It's as if in their eyes, he was unbeatable and winning against him was impossible but little did they knew that nothing is impossible.
Just because he has always been winning doesn't mean he was never going to lose in life. That's not how life works.
One can't win through their entire life. We must lose to be able to taste the happiness and satisfaction of winning.
It's like an reminder to continue working on their skills and come back stronger than before.
The other guy aka the best racer got out of his car. He forwarded his hand to Andrew who had an small, barely visible smile on his face.
"Congratulations brother. You finally decided to come out," he said with a grin.
He wasn't the least bothered by the fact that he just lost in a race against him. He was looking so happy like he has won a lottery.
Well, that's how he has always been. He was ready to fight against all of the odds with a smile.
He was so strong and his strength always amazes Andrew. He was mentally strong enough to deal with everything life throws at him.
"Congratulations on your first public lose. You gave me a tough competition as usual like I expected you would, Mateo," Andrew said, shaking his hand.
Everyone present there was confused expect Veronica who knew what was going on.
"Wait a second, how do you know his name and why are you calling him brother? What am I missing? Bro, I thought that I know everything about your life," David said with a pout which was looking weird, weird enough for Mateo to make a vomiting face.
"Bro, I am really to give you all of my property but please don't make this face before me. I might throw up or die from eye cancer," Mateo said with a dramatic expression.
Veronica who barely ever gives reactions couldn't help but chuckle at their conversation. Her chuckle wasn't loud enough but it was there.
"Ok, I won't but spill the tea," David said like a nosy neighbor auntie who wants to know about all of the juicy stuffs aka what's going on others lives.
"He is just like a brother to me. That's all you need to know," Andrew said dismissing David.
David looked at Mateo like a little child who's candy was snatched away by a greedy old lady who didn't want to spend money on buying a candy but snatching away others things seemed like a good idea.
"Aish, I used to work under his father and we got really close from there. Close enough to be each other's brother and I used to challenge him in races on another spot. It's a private place, you won't know," Mateo blabbered.
David had this 'oh' face plastered on his face. Everything was now making sense to him. He knew Andrew wasn't the type who would easily agree to shake hands with a stranger.
The walls around his heart was already built too high and nobody was capable enough to break them and went inside where she, Veronica was caged.
His heart was like a castle and she was like a princess trapped there. The walls around his heart was to protect her, not to cage her.
"Long time no see, Veri. I honestly missed you. I don't remember the last time we talked. Everything I come here, you guys are gone but even if you guys are here, you are in the VIP area while I am in a race," he said with a warm smile.
He had a special place for Veronica in his heart. She was like a sister to him. He knew that she has been through lots of things and that's why she changed but deep inside she was still the same Veronica who would cook delicious food for him and his brother, Andrew.
"Same."
"We should go and hang out somewhere. What say?"
"Not yet. Something needs to be done," Veronica said with a smirk.
Others looked at her with a confused look.
"What else needs to be done?" Mateo asked, David nodded his head, agreeing to ask the same question.
"I want to race against someone," Veronica said and Mateo instantly started shaking his head with a horrified look plastered on his face.
"No, I am not ready to accept two loses on the same day. You are a better racer than Andrew from what I have heard from him. He wins against me most of the time and so do you but against him. I have lost enough reputation for one day and now no matter how much you request, I won't agree," Mateo started to blabber.
Veronica tried to interrupt in the middle but he wasn't ready to hear anyone at that moment. He was determined to not get in his car again now.
"You need to hear me out first-" Veronica was cut off by him.
"No, you need to hear me out first. You are extremely respected by me but my reputation is also precious. Everyone knows that I never lose but today, this belief of them broke as well."
He was going on and on about how important his reputation was. Veronica's head was now burning.
She felt like slapping him to bring him into reality but she decided not to and tolerate him.
"You need to shut up first and let her speak," David said while mumming Mateo by putting his hand over his lips.
This scene was somehow comical given that David was almost twice big from Mateo. It seemed as if a emotionless kidnapper was trying to kidnap a school boy.
Mateo was struggling to get out of David's arms but it seemed like a impossible task to the others.
"You need to stop trying so hard. It's not going to work. You might have better driving skills than me but I am still the one with better strength," David whispered in his ears.
Veronica, who was shameless in such matters started to blush. She was clearly the wild type girl who won't hesitate to kiss a stranger.
Yet, the scene before her eyes were enough to raise her heartbeat. She has always been a fan of soft and sweet romance.
It seemed more intimating and she went back to her teenage days when she used to watch lots of drama about boy love. She would often ship a guy with another and she would even ship her then boyfriend aka Andrew with other guys.
She was definitely fan-girling and shipping David and Mateo.
Mateo continued to struggle. Andrew cleared his throat. He wasn't the most comfortable with this situation.
After years of Veronica shipping him with other guys despite being his girlfriend, he was somehow traumatized.
He really didn't support this boy love as he was a boy himself. It was too weird for him and especially when the ones getting shipped was his younger brother and a close friend.
"You should hear her out before imagining things by yourself. Maybe she wants to say something else," He said and only then Mateo stopped struggling.
Veronica who was looking at Mateo and David with hearts in her eyes, looked at Andrew with flames in her eyes.
Andrew could feel the heat of her glare and looked at her with a confused look. He started to feel like a villain in Mateo and David's love story.
He wanted to shout that he has no connection with this entire situation and she should stop glaring at him but he didn't.
He just couldn't do it. Especially when after years, he could finally see a glimpse of his love, of his old Veronica, the sweetest little girl alive.
He couldn't help but love her just as much now, as well. How could he not love her in all forms when all of them were her versions. All of them were her.
He would love her even if she turns into a poison that can slowly lead him to death.
"Ok, if you guys are insisting so much then I am ok with hearing her side. Veronica, what do you want to do?"
"I want to race against Andrew," she said with a smirk.
Andrew and David looked at her like she has lost her mind.
"But you said that you don't want to race today."
"But I do now. My mood has changed. What do you say Andrew?"
