chapter 59
Chapter 59
======================
Brief explanation for those who skipped the previous chapter:
Take had a change of heart.
Nabal & Hasan forced Lily to forfeit the semi-finals.
Lily refused.
Lily was put into an unawakening state by Nabal & Hasan’s cursed sword, and CogTwo was destroyed.
Take, who happened to pass by, challenged them but was beaten badly.
These events were narrated from Take’s perspective.
Now, let’s continue!
======================
■□■
“It was Nabal and Hasan who attacked Lily. They were saying something about the authority of the human race. And that they had to win… I think it’s probably some kind of request.”
“A request… for adventurers…?”
“Yeah, but… hey…”
Despite my gritted teeth as I try to endure, Take brazenly steps into that territory.
“Why are you crying…?”
“I’m not crying!”
Besides, I wasn’t expecting you to start with your life story!
When you tell such a heavy tale, of course I’m going to cry!
As you get older, your tear ducts get looser, you know!
But I understand the situation now.
And there’s no doubt that Nabal & Hasan are the culprits.
While there’s a possibility that Take is lying, the circumstantial evidence points to them being the only possible culprits.
Look, the general public doesn’t know that Lily = Demon King, right?
So the question arises, how did they identify Lily as the Demon King?
That’s where that thing comes in.
The secret passage for VIPs.
Nabal & Hasan were probably watching who came out of there, weren’t they?
Sara & Sophia could have done the same thing, but they’ve already lost, so they have no motive to attack Lily.
So naturally, the list of suspects narrows down.
It becomes clear that Nabal & Hasan are likely the culprits.
So even if we wanted to report Nabal & Hasan to the tournament organizing committee or something, we apparently can’t because there’s no proof that Lily was the Demon King (?).
Moreover, the fundamental question of whether there’s even an organizing committee for a tournament in a game keeps coming up.
If it’s all system-driven, there might not be an organizing committee at all, right?
If that’s the case, it might be difficult to disqualify Nabal & Hasan.
Also, there’s the basic problem that I don’t have much connection with those in power, so I can’t really be too aggressive about “taking this to the top!”
Who could I even turn to? Joachim?
But it’s not like I’m particularly close with him.
Then there’s the matter of Lily’s sleep.
From what Take says, it seems the opponent has an incredibly dangerous sword that puts you to sleep with just a graze, and you can’t wake up.
It’s probably some kind of magic sword, but after putting Lily to sleep with it, they declared she’d probably wake up around the time of the finals.
Furthermore, judging from their statement about “if there hadn’t been a prior target” to Take, it seems to be a magic sword that puts the last person it strikes into eternal sleep.
In other words, either Nabal or Hasan is probably planning to use that magic sword on either Iko or Gobzou in the finals, putting them to sleep, and then win in a two-on-one fight.
And they’re saying not to worry because Lily’s curse will be lifted and she’ll wake up at that time…
…………
Don’t mess with me…
I know how hard Lily has been working this past month, how much effort she’s put in for Take’s sake.
I’ve been watching closely all this time!
And then they go and wreck CogTwo, which I poured my heart and soul into making for Lily…
And all this for a reason that’s utterly meaningless to me, like the authority of the human nation…
How am I supposed to calm down!?
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth…
For treachery, treachery in return—
If they’re going to play dirty, we need to play dirty too to maintain the [Balance], right…?
Right, [Balance]?
Yeah, that’s right. (in falsetto)
Mm-hmm. If [Balance] says so, I guess we have no choice.
“Anyway, I understand the situation now. I don’t know where this organizing committee is, but I’ll try to negotiate with them. So, Take, you can rest easy and sleep. Also, could you please look after Lily occasionally?”
“Got it. I don’t want to see Lily sad over something so unreasonable either. Please do something… I’m begging you.”
My chest aches, but that’s because I’ve just told a bald-faced lie.
I have no intention of looking for any organizing committee.
“Well then, I’ll be off.”
I leave the room, leaving Lily and Take behind.
In the hallway, I make eye contact with Tatsu, who’s wiping his eyes with a scrap of cloth.
“This ain’t good… I’m too old for this kinda thing…”
“Were you listening by any chance?”
“Well, the atmosphere seemed kinda hard to break into. I heard from partway through…”
That’s perfect then.
“If that’s the case, you should understand what I’m thinking, right Tatsu?”
“…………. Well, I’ve got the gist of it? But the opponents are strong. As you are now, there’s a good chance you’d be done in.”
“That’s right. As I am now.”
Especially troublesome is that cursed magic sword they possess.
The fact that even a graze would end it all is nothing short of a threat.
So we need to take countermeasures.
— Don’t even let their attacks graze us.
If we can do that, the cursed magic sword becomes nothing more than an ordinary sword, with no special effect.
And to implement this countermeasure, we need to become stronger.
I want more overwhelming and vast experience points, and all the SP I can get.
“Time’s up around 10 AM tomorrow. That’s when the semi-finals will start.”
“That’s plenty of time. I was already prepared in various ways, so now it’s just the finishing touches. If anything, I should thank you for giving me the trigger.”
“You’re going to do it? Again?”
“I’m going to call one more person. You’ll help too, right Tatsu?”
“After hearing all that, I’ve got no choice but to help. Besides, I’ve been feeling pent up from the Grand Martial Arts Festival. I’ll join you to blow off some steam.”
“Also, sorry. I helped out, but I couldn’t meet Maris.”
“Can’t be helped. I thought it’d be difficult time-wise from the start. More importantly, let’s focus on this now.”
“Yeah. Shall we go then?”
I start walking down the inn’s hallway while sending a message to Tsuna.
Now then—
Shall we set out for some midnight EOD hunting…?
■□■
We met up with Tsuna and came to the Forzane Underground Labyrinth.
Even though it’s late into the night, there are many people doing area boss runs, as if this is prime time for gamers.
We’re having a brief meeting while keeping our distance from such people.
Well, when we get close, they glare at us with eyes that could kill, saying things like “What, are you guys trying to cut in line!? Get to the back!” So we have no choice but to keep our distance, and besides, we don’t want our conversation overheard.
“I’ll be the main fighter, but let me tell you two about the enemy’s information.”
According to the information I researched in the library, the characteristics of the Great Boulder Worm are as follows:
Main body is earth-elemental
Weak against wind element
Weak point is the abdomen
Has automatic HP recovery ability, disadvantageous in long battles
Poor eyesight, locates opponents through sound and vibration
Omnivorous, eats anything
That’s the gist of it.
“I’ve never seen one in person, but it sounds like a troublesome opponent. Can we defeat it?”
Tsuna shows a worried expression, but I’ve been preparing for nearly a month.
I’ve got that covered.
“Of course. That’s why I called you, Tsuna. Let me explain the rough strategy.”
The troublesome part of the Great Boulder Worm is its strong vitality.
It has a hard outer shell, and its weakness to wind-element magic, which is incredibly weak for attack magic, makes it difficult to damage with magic attacks. On top of that, it has automatic HP recovery.
If the Crystal Dragon is an EOD that excels in defense, the Great Boulder Worm is probably an EOD that excels in vitality.
If we approached this normally, it would be extremely difficult to defeat.
That’s why I’ve devised a strategy.
“First, we’ll seal its troublesome automatic HP recovery. At the same time, we’ll flip it over to expose its weak point, the abdomen. Then we’ll deliver a massive, fatal blow. That’s our three-step plan.”
“Just hearin’ it makes it sound awfully simple.”
“Oh, by the way, I’m planning to have Tatsu handle sealing the automatic recovery.”
“What… did you say…”
“And if possible, I’d like Tsuna to handle flipping it over.”
“You’re dragging me into this too…”
Because I want to take it easy!
I believe in using whatever resources are available!
We gather to discuss the strategy.
The people challenging the area boss are looking at us like “What are they doing?”, but they don’t actively try to interfere.
As expected of Tsuna.
The effect of the naked loincloth is tremendous!
I explain the strategy in detail to Tatsu and Tsuna, confirming whether they can do it.
Both of them seemed to think for a bit, but in the end, they nodded silently, apparently deciding they could do it.
If that’s the case, all that’s left is to prepare properly and challenge it.
I quietly open my status screen—

I dump all the SP I’ve been saying I wouldn’t use into my stats.
With this, all my parameters have increased by 106. All my parameters are now over 340, significantly surpassing the A-rank adventurer stats Tatsu mentioned of all values being over 100 and specialties being over 200, but…
— It’s still not enough.
I remember when I glimpsed Sara’s status while retrieving Gaga’s magic sword, there was a notation like ×1.8, probably due to skill effects.
In other words, depending on skills, there’s a risk that stats could be doubled or tripled.
To counter that, I want to boost my stats as much as possible.
In that case, I definitely want to defeat this EOD.
Let’s defeat it and claim the experience points and SP.
And then, on top of that…
— I’ll avenge Lily!
