Chapter 60
“But why didn’t Demian come?”
Crunch.
Sienna asked while waiting for the carriage to arrive and solving the problem assigned to her as homework.
“An adult relative is coming, so he’ll be staying at home this week.”
When Eleanor answered, Sienna nodded her head. Lucas, who was lying face down on the desk, muttered inadvertently.
“I envy him.”
“You’re envious, you say?”
Eleanor gently pinched Lucas’ cheek, which was as soft as glutinous rice cake, and then let go.
‘It’s so soft! How cute!’
Eleanor’s heart melted. She deliberately drooped her eyes and looked upset.
“How sad. Luke, I’m going to miss you if you don’t come.”
Lucas’ eyes widened. He quickly got up and shouted urgently.
“I’m going to miss you too!”
“I like Luke, but Luke…”
Lucas answered without hesitation for a moment.
“I like you too, Teacher.”
Eleanor’s eyes were as round as a rainbow. She couldn’t help but smile at how adorable he looked.
“How much?”
“So much!”
Sienna, who had been quietly listening next to him, suddenly joined in.
“I like you too, Teacher. More than Luke likes you!”
“Really?”
Eleanor rested her chin and quietly watched the two bickering. It was a scenery that made her feel tired just by looking at it.
“The Imperial carriage has arrived.”
At that time, Albert announced the arrival of the carriage. Eleanor smiled broadly and gestured to Lucas.
“Luke, it’s time to go home.”
After sending Lucas off, Eleanor held Sienna’s hand and got into the prepared carriage. Today was the day they all decided to eat together at Marquis Blake’s residence.
“Since when were you and Uncle friends?”
“It’s been a long time. I’ve known him since I was really young.”
Sienna didn’t stop chattering with excitement throughout the ride in the carriage. Sienna, with her pale cheeks and pink blush, looked like a peach that wanted to be bitten right away.
“Is Uncle the same now as he was when he was young?”
“Um, no. I think his face is similar, but his personality is a little different.”
“How was he?”
“He was a little harsher than he is now. He spoke less too.”
“It’s hard to imagine Uncle being grumpy.”
“During the Academy days, he didn’t really reply to letters. After every five letters I sent, he would only send one. And incredibly careless, at that.”
Even thinking about it now, it’s a bit embarrassing.
Eleanor, who was looking back at herself and Adrian when they were children, pouted her lips. Beside her, Sienna sighed and shook her head.
“In the end, this is all Uncle’s karma.”
He has to try harder.
Eleanor burst out laughing at Sienna’s words.
“Karma? You know that word too? Who taught you?”
“I saw it in a book.”
“Siena, you don’t have to worry about your interview preparation. Teacher thinks you speak much better than me.”
Sienna grinned like a puppy at Eleanor’s words.
“After entering the Academy, I will send a hundred letters to Teacher.”
“Really? A hundred?”
Sienna was deep in thought. She guesses a hundred seems like a bit much.
“I’ll split a hundred with Lucas and Demian. Teacher needs to send us replies too!”
The carriage slowly stopped, and as soon as they got off, they saw Claude and Adrian waiting.
“Our princesses are here!”
As Claude hugged Sienna, Sienna kissed Claude on the cheek. Sienna wrinkled her nose at the feeling of his rough beard scratching her delicate cheek.
“Hello, grandpa. Your beard hurts.”
“Ah, that’s right. “I’m sorry.”
Claude gently placed Sienna on the ground and stretched out his arms towards Eleanor. She naturally hugged him tightly.
“How you doing?”
“I’m always like that. I miss my daughter who is busy, hectic, and whose news I don’t hear any… Ellen, what about you?”
“I’m always like that too. I’m busy, hectic, and I miss the Marquis.”
Claude smiled brightly and lightly tapped Eleanor on the shoulder.
“Let’s go in. The food will get cold.”
Eleanor, who also exchanged a brief hug with the Marchioness, entered the room where the meal had been prepared. Adrian, who was waiting for her, pulled out Eleanor’s chair.
“Thanks.”
Sienna, who was sitting across from her and looking at the two people, smiled happily.
Nice, Uncle.
The meal went on in a warm and cozy atmosphere. As always, Claude praised Eleanor until his mouth went dry, and Adrian and Sienna next to her eagerly joined in. Eleanor had to blush several times from the embarrassment;
“I feel really good having dinner with Teacher and Uncle.”
“Really?”
When Eleanor asked again, Sienna nodded her head vigorously.
“I like it too.”
Adrian, who was sitting next to her, slightly lifted the glass and then put it down. Eleanor pretended not to notice his gaze that kept tickling her cheek, and poked at the pie in front of her with a fork.
Claude’s eyes narrowed slightly as he watched the two. He can’t explain it exactly, but something was a little different from usual.
‘I think something happened between the two.’
Claude’s mouth quirked up very subtly. In times like these, it was best for him to just pretend not to know.
The meal was almost finished, and everyone patted their swollen bellies and leaned back comfortably in the chair.
Adrian and Sienna began debating whether the most delicious cake in the world was chocolate cake or strawberry whipped cream cake. The Marchioness said she had something to deliver to Sienna’s mother, so she left early, and Claude was enjoying the wine left in the glass.
As she watched the family spend a peaceful time, she felt the discomfort she had felt since the tea party melted away. Anais’ words and the shocking truth that Dahlia had told her were forgotten for a moment.
At that time, Claude proposed to Eleanor.
“Ellen, how about we talk for a moment in my office?”
“Yes, I’d love to.”
Eleanor readily nodded her head and stood up from her seat.
“I wish Dwight had eaten with us too. It’s been like half a year since I haven’t seen him.”
“I know, right. It seems like he’s very busy these days. He looks somewhat out of his mind.”
“I heard that the Princess from Mösen came to visit, so I guess that’s why.”
Eleanor answered, pulling out the familiar soft chair and sitting down.
“I think so. It seems like the Princess gets along quite well with Dwight.”
“How amazing. Those are two people who never seem to get along…”
Claude shrugged his shoulders and sat down. He said, putting on the glasses that were on the desk.
“I heard the story about changing the paper from Rian. You coped brilliantly.”
“It was nothing special.”
Eleanor shrugged her shoulders.
“What do you mean nothing special. You need to be more kind to yourself, Ellen.”
“I think I’m still generous enough…”
Eleanor protested timidly.
“You clap and praise Sienna for finishing a whole plate of salad, yet you always brush off the things you do as insignificant. Like a habit.”
Claude looked at Eleanor carefully and gave advice. The golden eyes behind the glasses sparkled warmly.
“I heard there aren’t many manuscripts left?”
“Yes, if I work hard, I think it will be finished in about next month.”
“Have you thought about what happens next?”
Claude asked, leaning his body closer to the desk. Eleanor shook her head slightly and answered vaguely.
“I’m not sure… For now, I’m going to focus on the children as much as possible until the exam.”
Claude’s question gave rise to new concerns for Eleanor.
‘Once I finish what I’m doing now, how should I live from then on?’
Maybe now is her chance. It’s an opportunity to naturally escape from the terrible shackles of daily routine that have continued from her past life to present life.
Of course, what started out as eating wasabi crying was surprisingly very enjoyable. She felt a great sense of accomplishment and met good people.
(eating wasabi crying: doing something you don’t want)
But it was a far cry from the life Eleanor had decided upon when she opened her eyes in this world.
Eleanor’s mind became confused.
“Right. You still have to compile the textbooks you have produced so far, so there is nothing to worry about too quickly. Think about it slowly.”
Claude slowly nodded his head.
“But next time there’s something you want to do, will you come see me then?”
“Of course. If that happens…”
I don’t think it will happen, though.
At that time, someone urgently knocked on the office door.
“Marquis, this is Ruben. Can I come in for a moment?”
“Come in.”
Claude’s secretary walked quickly across the room.
“Is it urgent?”
“Yes. This is an issue that needs to be reported immediately. Please excuse me, Lady Everett.”
The secretary glanced at Eleanor, who was sitting across from Claude.
“Shall I go out then?”
When Eleanor tried to slowly raise her body, Claude stopped her with a wave of his hand. He asked the secretary.
“So what’s going on?”
“Several families have requested a withdrawal of investment.”
“Suddenly?”
Claude frowned. The smile disappeared from his face in an instant.
Eleanor looked at the two people in turn, trying to understand the situation. It seemed clear that something bad had happened.
“Yes, but it’s quite large.”
“Tell me exactly how much.”
Claude said in a firm voice. The secretary, who studied him for a moment, answered.
“It’s about one-fifth.”
Crash.
Eleanor was startled and her eyes widened. It wasn’t normal for as many as one-fifth of the powers to withdraw their investment without prior notice.
A look of surprise was also evident on Claude’s face. As if his vision was getting blurry, he pressed his fingers between his eyebrows to catch his breath.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure.”
“Did you figure out the reason?”
“I apologize. We don’t have it figured out at the moment. The situation is such that there is no answer.”
At the secretary’s words, the atmosphere in the office became even more serious. The air, which had been soft like a blanket just a moment ago, was now trembling like grains of sand.
“I think it would be a good idea to go and see for yourself.”
Claude slowly nodded his head at the secretary’s words.
“It would be better.”
Claude looked towards Eleanor.
“Ellen, I’m sorry. There seems to be a problem at the merchant. Tell Adrian to take you home. I’m sorry.”
“No. I can go back alone.”
“Then I don’t think I will feel at ease.”
This time Eleanor couldn’t refuse. When she answered that she understood, Claude smiled.
“My daughter is always kind.”
After lightly tapping Eleanor on the shoulder, he picked up the coat hanging next to him and said,
“Don’t worry too much. It won’t be a big deal.”
Eleanor nodded her head with an anxious expression.
‘It won’t be a big deal, right…?’
