Chapter 40 - Plans
Upon hearing this, Jian was quite surprised. Jiang Hui’s first reaction to receiving a large compensation was actually to make a donation. It made her reflect on how today’s young people often possess a strong sense of social responsibility… which was certainly more than she had at that age. However, this wasn’t unusual; in their line of work, they had seen all kinds of people, and those like Jiang Hui were not rare.
She didn’t immediately ask Jiang Hui how much she intended to donate but instead inquired about her specific plans for the donation and the projects she intended to support.
The donation system in the star system was relatively well-established. Individuals could donate directly without necessarily going through large organizations, as long as the recipients were registered legal charitable organizations approved by the Empire. The remaining procedures could be simplified.
However, it still depended on what project Jiang Hui wanted to donate to. For projects that required long-term follow-up or special individuals, she might need to go through a foundation or agency for assistance. Although society was more transparent now, there was still plenty of room for manipulation, and individuals could easily be taken advantage of in direct dealings. Generally, this method of donation was typically used by businesses for commercial purposes.
For example, donations to individual projects like the Major Illness Association, which can directly assist patients, can be made as a one-time payment.
Jiang Hui wanted to make two separate donations: one would go to the education system in remote star systems to help more talented and ambitious students continue their education.
The other donation would be directed towards the Border Defense Military’s welfare, specifically to assist disabled veterans.
Jian was somewhat surprised. The first donation was quite common, falling under the most typical categories of charitable giving, while the second was relatively rare. After all, the imperial military was usually quite well-funded, with the government providing substantial support, and large amounts of military resources being allocated. It didn’t seem like they would be lacking in funds.
People in the star system tended to be very practical, and few civilians made donations in this area. Furthermore, donations to military and government causes generally couldn’t be used for tax deductions, which was intended to prevent individuals with ulterior motives from exploiting loopholes. Therefore, such contributions mostly came from specific social classes or socially responsible entrepreneurs.
It was quite unusual for a young person to think of making a donation in this area.
Jiang Hui quietly said, “Both my parents are soldiers.” However, she did not mention that her original parents had died in the Border Defense War.
Jian immediately understood; this Ms. Jiang’s parents were imperial soldiers, and she was indeed living alone without a guardian. Her desire to donate to the military now carried a certain significance.
Jian didn’t pursue the topic further. After all, it would be unreasonable and cruel to ask the other person if her parents had perished or suffered on the battlefield; it was better to pretend not to know.
Both types of donations Jiang Hui wanted to make had corresponding interfaces specifically designed to accept donations from various sectors of society, without the need to go through any organization.
She would only need to submit the relevant materials and sign her name to each institution. Once the institutions confirmed her identity, the interstellar bank would transfer the funds to the corresponding accounts.
For the first donation, there was a tax to be paid because this donation came from her compensation. While it wouldn’t accrue interest, it could still offset a portion of her tax liability.
As for the donation to the military, that amount would go entirely through the national treasury’s sub-account, which did not require any taxes to be paid. However, it also couldn’t be used for tax deductions.
Jiang Hui could submit applications for both donations at home. Generally, if she submitted them tonight, they would likely be processed within the next couple of days.
However, she was essentially just a Blue Star citizen who had only recently arrived in the interstellar realm and hadn’t fully figured out how to use her holographic computer yet, let alone navigate these complex processes. Therefore, she decided to entrust this matter to Ms. Jian. The firm she worked for had a wide range of services, and they happened to have this particular task as well.
Jian stated that this would be very easy, and she could take care of it for her by tomorrow. Once Jiang Hui returned home and reported the donation amounts to her, she could then fill out the relevant application documents based on those amounts and submit them.
At this point, their conversation was essentially coming to a close, and both parties felt satisfied with the outcome.
Just as the two were packing up their things and preparing to leave, Jian suddenly seemed to remember something and asked, “Ms. Jiang, you just arrived in the permanent star system, right?”
This basic information was included, and when Jiang Hui submitted her application materials, she forgot to hide that part, so the other party naturally saw it when accepting the commission.
“Yes, I previously lived in the inner star system. Due to family changes, I moved here. But I didn’t stay long before I was sent to the hospital after being hit by a smart robot from Hailusi,” Jiang Hui couldn’t help but smile wryly.
So she was originally a resident of the inner star system; her family must have been quite wealthy, which explained her nonchalance about the compensation.
The living domains in the interstellar realm are divided into several levels. The commonly known conventional living domains are roughly categorized into four levels: outer star systems, permanent star systems, inner star systems, and central star zones.
The positioning goes from outer to inner and from lower to upper, with the more central areas being more important. The best living domain is, of course, the central star zone, often referred to as the capital star system, where many high-ranking officials, military and political leaders, the richest of the rich, and their immediate families reside. Of course, there are also ordinary residents there, but these so-called ordinary people have long ceased to be what one would typically consider ordinary due to thousands of years of environmental influence and certain regional advantages.
The next level down, the inner star system, is considered a high-quality living area. It is primarily inhabited by many scholars, experts in various fields, and some small to medium-sized noble families and wealthy households. Some well-known universities and colleges also prefer to establish themselves there.
They are currently located in the permanent star system, which is considered an ordinary moderately prosperous living area. Citizen life here is stable, and resources are relatively abundant, but the conditions and amenities are inferior to those of the upper levels.
As for the outer star systems, they are basically composed of extremely impoverished border stars, exile planets, garbage planets, or dark domains. In short, most of the conditions there are poor. This part is close to the outer circle of the permanent star system, where conditions are somewhat acceptable, and the education and communication systems are connected to those of the inner regions.
Of course, humanity has explored such vast territories, but the universe remains infinite and many places are still unexplored and not included in governance. Some places that have yet to be visited by humans and are not currently documented are referred to as unknown stars or dark stars. This information is not typically included in public records, so ordinary citizens are not very aware of it.
