The Spider-Grind

Chapter 15: Chapter 15: The Beast Within

The sewer tunnels reeked of damp mildew and stagnant water. Ethan led the charge, his sharp senses guiding them through the maze-like passageways. Gwen followed closely, her eyes scanning the shadows, while Peter tried to lighten the mood with a steady stream of jokes.

"So, just to recap," Peter quipped, swinging overhead, "we're chasing a giant lizard in a dark, smelly sewer. If I die down here, I'm haunting all of you."

"Noted," Ethan replied, his voice sharp with focus. "But let's focus on not dying, okay?"

Gwen smirked. "You know, Parker, maybe if you spent less time talking and more time looking, you'd stop swinging into low-hanging pipes."

Peter rubbed his head sheepishly. "Touché."

Ethan raised a hand, motioning for silence. "We're close. I can feel it."

They moved cautiously, the sound of dripping water echoing through the tunnels. A faint growl reached their ears, growing louder with each step.

They rounded a corner and froze. Dr. Connors—or what was left of him—stood in the center of a large chamber, his mutated body towering over them. The Lizard's muscles bulged grotesquely, its scales shimmering in the dim light. Empty vials littered the floor around it, the remnants of the serum now coursing through its veins.

"Oh, great," Gwen muttered. "He's been juicing."

The Lizard turned its glowing yellow eyes toward them, letting out a bone-rattling roar. The ground trembled as it stomped forward, its claws digging into the concrete.

Peter gulped. "So, uh, anyone have a plan? Because I'm open to suggestions."

"Same as always," Ethan said, stepping forward. "We take it down."

The Lizard lunged, its claws slashing through the air. Ethan dove to the side, narrowly avoiding the attack. He landed on his feet and launched himself forward, delivering a powerful punch to the creature's chest.

To his shock, the Lizard barely flinched. It swung its massive tail, catching Ethan in the ribs and sending him crashing into the wall.

"Okay," Ethan groaned, pushing himself up. "He's stronger than before."

"No kidding," Gwen said, firing webs at the Lizard's legs. The creature tore through the webbing with ease, snarling as it charged toward her.

Peter swung in, kicking the Lizard's head to divert its attention. "Over here, big guy!"

The Lizard roared, swiping at Peter, who flipped out of reach.

As the fight raged on, Ethan's body began to change. His muscles tensed, his reflexes sharpened, and he felt an unfamiliar surge of power coursing through him.

It's happening again, he realized. I'm adapting to him.

The Lizard swung its claws at him again, but this time Ethan didn't dodge. Instead, he caught the creature's arm mid-swing, his grip unyielding.

"What the—" Peter started, his jaw dropping.

Ethan grinned. "Guess I'm stronger now."

He pushed back against the Lizard, forcing it to stumble. His punches landed harder, his movements faster and more precise.

"Keep him busy!" Ethan shouted, dodging another attack. "We need to use the environment to our advantage!"

Gwen nodded, scanning the chamber. Her eyes landed on a cluster of rusted pipes overhead. "Peter, web those pipes! Bring them down!"

Peter swung up, firing web after web at the supports. The pipes groaned under the weight of his pull before crashing down onto the Lizard.

The creature roared, momentarily pinned. Ethan seized the opportunity, leaping onto its back and wrapping his arms around its neck.

"Stay down!" he growled, tightening his grip.

But the Lizard's strength was monstrous. It pushed itself up, throwing Ethan off.

"Okay," Gwen said, landing beside Ethan. "New plan?"

"Hit it harder," Ethan replied, wiping blood from his lip.

The trio attacked in unison, their teamwork seamless. Peter distracted the Lizard with rapid swings and taunts, while Gwen targeted its legs, wrapping them in webbing to slow it down.

Ethan took advantage of the opening, delivering powerful blows to the creature's torso. His fists struck like hammers, each punch reverberating through the chamber.

The Lizard grew more frantic, its movements wild and uncoordinated. It swung its tail again, but Ethan caught it mid-swing, slamming it into the ground.

"Not so tough now, are you?" he taunted, his voice laced with determination.

The creature let out a final, desperate roar before collapsing, its body too damaged to continue.

Ethan stood over it, his chest heaving. He glanced at Gwen and Peter, who were equally out of breath but grinning.

"We did it," Peter said, his voice filled with relief.

"Barely," Gwen replied. "But yeah, we did."

The Lizard lay unconscious, its chest rising and falling in shallow breaths. Ethan knelt beside it, his expression grim.

"We need to get him back to the lab," he said. "If there's any chance of reversing this, it's there."

Gwen nodded. "Agreed. But how do we get a giant lizard out of the sewers without attracting attention?"

Peter smirked. "Leave it to me."

With their combined efforts, they webbed the Lizard securely and began the arduous process of dragging it back to the surface.

As they worked, Ethan couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. They had faced one of their toughest challenges yet and come out on top.

But he also knew this was just the beginning. The city's shadows were growing darker, and more threats were sure to emerge.

For now, though, they had won. And as Ethan looked at his teammates, he felt a sense of pride and camaraderie. They were a team—a mismatched, chaotic, and unstoppable team.

And he wouldn't have it any other way.
