Chapter 4: A trip to the Archives
Olivia was up earlier than usual. She made sure she was ready and was now glancing at the time as she shoved breakfast in her face, which was the dinner she ended up not eating the night before.
Olivia had never been to the archives and was excited to see what she could find out.
The Earth had been evacuated around one thousand years ago because of a massive war that prompted the use of nuclear weapons. Over half of the population had perished and the first space station that was built to orbit Earth wasn't finished. The Earth's government however didn't see any other choice as most of the planet was no longer inhabitable. But because there was already a plan in place to start a colony first on the space station, then the moon they were able to save as many people as possible.
Olivia had thought about joining the Earth Reclamation project. She wanted to help search for and archive any lost artifacts and information, plus they were in the process of cleaning up and building a safe camp for everyone involved in cleaning up the planet.
Olivia left the house with a bounce in her step. Because of the extra credits she got from her parents she could use the teleporter to get to the transit hub instead of walking all the way. She also noticed that her quest was repeatable so every day she could take a walk to get 10 exp. It was a rather slow way to gain experience but so far no other quest had shown up.
Once Olivia got to the transit portal she again heard a ding in her head and saw a message pop up.
[Daily quest complete. 10 exp granted]
[EXP: 20/200]
Olivia still didn't know what would happen when she gained enough experience to level but she figured she would figure things out as they happened. She then took out her data card and scanned the portal. It flickered to life and Olivia walked through. The feeling of entering the portal was a little disorienting but it didn't last long before Olivia found herself standing in the middle of the transit hub.
Here you could get a portal to any major location and most neighborhoods in the city. There was also a high speed rail system that connected all the large cities together. People could also use the portals to travel to the other cities but the rail system had been built first and was still used by those that couldn't afford to use the portal system every day.
Olivia made her way to the exit and saw Tori standing there waiting for her.
"Tori over here!" Olivia waved.
Tori smiled when she saw her friend. "Decided to take the transit portal today I see."
"Yes, well, I didn't want to make you wait longer than you needed to." Olivia replied in a rush.
Tori laughed at her friend as they started to walk towards the archives library.
The library was a very large building. It was one of the only buildings in the area that was made of brick and concrete. It had very few windows, but did have a large glass dome on part of the roof.
Olivia rushed up the steps of the library and opened the heavy glass doors.
The moment Olivia walked in she was awed by the large foye. The ceiling was very high to accommodate the most amazing tree she had ever seen. The tree was growing out of a large hole in the floor and it's branches were reaching towards the light that filtered in through the large glass dome.
Trees were rare in the large cities. They were usually only found in the nature preserve and the smaller settlements that spanned between the cities. With an automatic environmental system there wasn't really much need for plants to provide oxygen.
"Welcome to the Earth Archives. Is there anything I can help you with?"
Olivia looked over to where the voice was coming from and saw an older gentleman with glasses and gray streaked hair getting up from behind the front desk.
"Oh sorry. I was just admiring the amazing tree you have here." Olivia replied with a smile.
"That is a cherry tree. We have tried many a year to try to get it to bloom and bare fruit but alas nothing so far has worked." The man said with a sigh. "Anyway, let's not fret about what we can't change. What can I do for you?"
Olivia thought for a moment. She didn't know how much information she should give to this person. She had never heard of, nor seen such technology and she doubted this person knew anything about a system inside someone's head.
"My name is Olivia Chase. I had a package delivered to me yesterday that had the Archives logo stamped on it. I was wondering if you had any information on who sent it and it's contents."
The man scratched his head in thought before he headed to the computer terminal at his desk. After a few minutes of typing and scrolling he finally found what he was looking for.
"It looks like your parents had brought the package here with instructions that it should be delivered to you once you had graduated high school. They left it with a friend of theirs four years ago, A Dr. Richardson. He must have been a researcher here as they tended to keep to themselves."
"Is Dr. Richardson still here? It sounds like you don't know who he is." Tori asked as she walked up beside Olivia.
"To be honest, I only spend my time at the front desk and tending our cherry tree. From the information I could pull up Dr. Richardson does still have an office here, but the researchers are always so busy that they rarely see anyone."
"They will however see the daughter of their dear friends." A deep voice spoke behind them.
