The Ruin Wars

Chapter 13: The Fault in the Ranks

The night after the mission was restless for everyone in Haven. Even those who hadn't gone on the rescue could feel the weight of the rescued prisoners' stories. Word had spread quickly: tales of inhumane experiments, genetic modifications gone horribly wrong, and survivors who had been twisted into something barely human.

Lucia lay in her cot, staring at the stone ceiling of the barracks. The memories of the facility replayed in her mind—the sterile, blood-soaked rooms, the prisoners' haunted eyes, the screams that still echoed in her ears.

Sleep was impossible.

She sat up and glanced around. Most of the barracks was asleep, save for Mira, who was leaning against the far wall, sharpening her blade.

"You too, huh?" Mira said, not looking up.

"Yeah." Lucia got up and walked over, sitting beside her. "I can't stop thinking about what we saw."

Mira sighed, setting her blade down. "It's worse than I imagined. And we're still only scratching the surface. Who knows what else they're doing in those labs?"

"We have to stop them," Lucia said, her voice firm.

"We will," Mira replied, though there was a shadow of doubt in her eyes.

---

The next morning, Talon called an urgent meeting in the war room. The tension was thick as the Fractured gathered around the map, where Talon had marked the locations of the remaining Nexus facilities.

"Last night's mission was a success," Talon began, his voice steady but grim. "We saved lives, and we dealt a blow to the Dominion. But they're going to retaliate—and soon."

Lucia nodded. "They won't let us get away with this."

"That's why we have to act quickly," Talon continued. "Our next target is the main research lab. This is where they're developing the core technology behind Project Nexus."

Mira raised an eyebrow. "You're saying we hit the heart of the operation?"

"Exactly," Talon said. "If we can destroy the lab, we cripple the entire project."

The room buzzed with murmurs. It was a bold plan, and everyone knew the risks.

"What about the traitor?" Cal asked suddenly, his voice cutting through the noise.

The room fell silent.

"We still don't know who they are," Alara said, her tone cautious. "But we can't let that paralyze us. We have to move forward."

"Moving forward blindly could get us all killed," Rylas interjected, his eyes narrowing.

Talon raised a hand, silencing them. "We'll deal with the traitor, but our priority right now is the lab. We can't let fear of betrayal stop us."

---

Preparations for the mission began immediately. The Fractured trained harder than ever, knowing the stakes were higher than anything they'd faced before.

Lucia sparred with Kai in the training yard, the clash of their blades echoing in the crisp morning air.

"You're distracted," Kai said, parrying one of her strikes.

Lucia frowned. "Sorry. Just... a lot on my mind."

"We all have a lot on our minds," Kai said, lowering his blade. "But if we're not focused, we won't stand a chance out there."

Lucia nodded, taking a deep breath. "You're right. Let's go again."

---

As the day wore on, whispers of distrust spread through Haven. The traitor's identity remained a mystery, and suspicion fell on everyone.

Lucia overheard a heated argument near the armory.

"I saw him sneaking around last night," one fighter said, pointing at another. "He was near the comms room. How do we know he's not the one feeding intel to the Dominion?"

"That's ridiculous," the accused fighter shot back. "I was on patrol. Check the logs if you don't believe me."

The tension was palpable, and it was clear that the traitor's presence was tearing Haven apart.

---

That evening, Talon called a private meeting with the Fractured.

"We need to address the traitor," he said, his expression grim. "Before we move on the lab, we have to ensure our team is solid."

Mira crossed her arms. "Easier said than done. We can't just start pointing fingers."

"No, but we can look for patterns," Talon said. "Who had access to the intel about Haven? Who was unaccounted for during the attack?"

Lucia spoke up. "We also need to be careful. If we accuse the wrong person, we'll only make things worse."

Talon nodded. "Agreed. That's why we'll handle this discreetly. Keep your eyes and ears open. Report anything suspicious."

---

Later that night, Lucia found herself wandering the lower levels of Haven. The tunnels were quiet, the only sound the faint drip of water echoing through the stone corridors.

She wasn't sure what she was looking for—answers, perhaps, or a moment of clarity.

As she rounded a corner, she spotted a figure in the shadows.

"Kai?" she called softly.

He turned, startled. "Lucia? What are you doing down here?"

"I could ask you the same thing," she said, stepping closer.

Kai hesitated. "I needed some air. Too much noise up top."

Lucia studied him carefully. He seemed genuinely uneasy, but something about his tone felt off.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

"Yeah," Kai said quickly. "Just tired."

Lucia nodded, though doubt lingered in her mind.

---

The next morning, the Fractured set out for the lab. The journey was grueling, the terrain rugged and unforgiving.

As they approached the facility, Mira scouted ahead, her sharp eyes scanning for threats.

"The perimeter's heavily guarded," she reported. "We'll need a distraction to get inside."

Cal grinned, patting his satchel of explosives. "Leave that to me."

The team moved into position, their hearts pounding.

When the first explosion rocked the facility, the Dominion guards scrambled to respond, leaving a gap in their defenses.

Talon led the way, his movements precise and calculated. The Fractured slipped inside, navigating the labyrinthine corridors with practiced ease.

---

The lab was a nightmare. Rows of containment pods lined the walls, each holding a person—or what was left of one.

Lucia's stomach turned as she saw the horrific results of the Dominion's experiments. Some of the subjects were still alive, their eyes filled with pain and fear.

"We have to free them," she said, her voice trembling.

"There's no time," Talon said. "We destroy the lab, or this all gets worse."

Lucia hesitated, torn between her compassion and the mission.

"We'll come back for them," Mira said, placing a hand on her shoulder. "But if we don't stop this now, there won't be anyone left to save."

Reluctantly, Lucia nodded.

---

The team planted charges throughout the lab, working quickly but carefully. The air was thick with tension, every sound amplifying their nerves.

As they prepared to leave, an alarm blared.

"Time's up," Talon said. "Move!"

Dominion soldiers swarmed the corridors, their weapons blazing.

The Fractured fought their way out, the explosions behind them tearing through the facility.

By the time they reached the extraction point, they were battered and bruised but alive.

As they regrouped, Talon turned to the team.

"We did it," he said. "But this war is far from over."

Lucia nodded, her resolve hardening. The fight against the Dominion was only beginning—and so was the battle to uncover the truth about the traitor in their midst.
