Chapter 195: Chapter 193: These Words Are Not Mine
"Return to your country?" The Queen blinked in surprise before her expression shifted to one of complexity. "Mr. Xiang, why must you return? Is it because of me...?"
"No, Miss Trulou. It is due to a family matter that I must return," Xiang Ri quickly interjected, well aware of the insinuation she was about to make—she likely sought to lay the blame at her own feet. However, such matters were not to be trifled with. After all, he was a man, and a gentleman at that; one must retain a sense of decorum. Moreover, the situation was indeed as he claimed.
"Is that so?" The Queen's gaze still held some doubt, though her features seemed to relax slightly. "If that is the case, then I shall not keep you. Please convey my regards to Miss Tie."
"Of course," Xiang Ri responded, continuing his breakfast in silence.
On the other side, Fang Yingying was seething with fury. What did this mean? Was she invisible to them? They were speaking as though she weren't even present, oblivious to her existence. Especially that scoundrel—deciding to return home without consulting her first! This decision, made unilaterally, drove her rage to its peak.
After breakfast, she quickly dragged the man into their room and immediately began questioning him. "Hey, Xiang Kui, what do you mean by this? Why didn't you tell me beforehand that you were leaving for your country?"
"I remember telling you yesterday afternoon that I would be leaving soon," Xiang Ri replied innocently, wondering if the secretary had truly understood what he'd said.
"Who knows what madness you were spouting yesterday afternoon!" Fang Yingying shot him an exasperated glance, recalling his strange behavior the day before. "And I had no idea you would leave so soon."
"Could it be that you're reluctant to part with me?" Xiang Ri asked, his expression one of bemusement.
"Reluctant to part with you?!" Fang Yingying scoffed. "Who do you think you are? I'm concerned about my safety. If you leave, who will protect me from bullets?" she declared with firm conviction, though there was a subtle flicker in her eyes.
"Protect you from bullets?" Xiang Ri chuckled bitterly, though his concern for her safety was not unwarranted. While the main culprits had been dealt with, and the Clown Prince's faction likely had no interest in avenging their former master, there were still others who might target her for the coveted blue ledger. "Don't worry. I'll have the Queen send a bodyguard to protect you."
Fang Yingying huffed but decided not to press the matter of security further. Instead, with a thoughtful tone, she remarked, "That Miss Trulou seems quite fond of you. Didn't you notice the expression on her face? The moment she heard you were leaving, it was as if she had lost a piece of herself. This shows that you hold great significance in her eyes, and…"
"Please don't spread baseless rumors," Xiang Ri interrupted, though part of him wished that what she said was true. Still, he did not consider it likely. He wasn't so arrogant as to believe that a ruler of a nation could fall for him simply after a few meetings.
Moreover, he did not view Trulou as some naïve girl who might offer herself to him out of gratitude for saving her life. Reaching the position of Queen was no simple feat, and she was no fool.
And considering that the Clown Prince had only sought her death to usurp her position—rather than trying to undermine her power from within—it was clear that her influence in the country was immense.
"Baseless rumors? Hmph, I think someone is too embarrassed to admit what is true," Fang Yingying retorted with a sharp edge to her voice, before changing the subject. "By the way, who is this Miss Tie?"
"Your ears are too sharp," Xiang Ri sighed with a wry smile. "Do you remember the time you mistakenly thought I was flirting with a female officer?"
"You're talking about that female officer?" Fang Yingying's memory clicked. It was the time she had been leaving a business meeting in a building and had happened to encounter him. There had been a celebrity present as well, and while she hadn't succeeded in inciting the celebrity's anger, she had noticed the unusual look on the female officer's face when she arrived. That was when she had subtly set Xiang Ri up.
Realizing this, Fang Yingying felt a small pang of guilt towards the man before her. However, that feeling quickly evaporated when she recalled his earlier words. "What do you mean 'flirting'? I wasn't flirting with you. Stop being so narcissistic! I just had a little trouble with my eyes, so I looked at people strangely."
"Strangely enough to make it seem like we had something more between us?" Xiang Ri shot back.
Fang Yingying was momentarily speechless but quickly found a retort. "Well, that's because you're such a flirt! You brought it upon yourself!"
"Fine, it's my fault, alright?" Xiang Ri rolled his eyes. In truth, he did feel somewhat guilty for the way he treated those who truly cared for him. To put it simply, it was akin to enjoying the meal on his plate while eyeing the food yet to be served, all the while craving the unserved dishes as well.
Seeing the man roll his eyes, Fang Yingying realized her words had been more provocative than intended. She sighed with a hint of complaint, "What's so special about you? So many women like you, even Director Su..." At this point, she suddenly stopped, realizing the implication of her words, and quickly fell silent.
Xiang Ri had already caught on to what the secretary had said, his expression one of surprise. "You mean Su Yu...?"
"No, I was just rambling!" Fang Yingying quickly denied, then added with a hint of threat, "But I warn you—if you dare to provoke Director Su, don't blame me for not showing mercy as your brother!"
"Don't worry. Even if she has some impression of me, I won't make a move," Xiang Ri reassured her calmly. In the past, he might have felt flattered and entertained the idea of scheming, but after the incident with Chu Chu, he had become more cautious in such matters.
"I hope you're telling the truth," Fang Yingying was unwilling to take his word for it, knowing that trusting a man with a wandering heart to make promises was quite foolish. To prevent him from having any misguided thoughts, she suddenly asked, "I'm curious—how does your Miss Trulou know that female officer? How could she not feel jealous? And still wish you well when you leave? Does she have some other peculiar hobbies?"
"Why do I get the feeling that you've always had a problem with the Queen?" Xiang Ri looked at the secretary, puzzled. Without waiting for her to respond, he went on to explain in detail how the Queen had been protected by a certain female officer and how she had been attacked.
Of course, he conveniently omitted any mention of his own "bravery" in the matter, even exaggerating the danger he had faced, particularly the two life-or-death moments when he had saved the Queen, which he described as thrilling and perilous, painting himself almost as a savior.
He also explained why he had been pursued in the hotel. He couldn't reveal the real reason involving the blue ledger, so he claimed that the Clown Prince had sought revenge for thwarting his plans and had repeatedly sent assassins after him. As for the assassins in the hotel, he provided other excuses for their actions.
After listening to the man's "story," Fang Yingying understood the general sequence of events, though she wasn't entirely convinced. At least when it came to the part about "sacrificing oneself for the sake of others," she didn't buy it. "Were you really that brave?"
"You don't believe me?" Xiang Ri asked, a slight hint of discouragement in his voice. It seemed his words had been in vain.
Fang Yingying neither nodded nor shook her head. Her eyes were filled with mockery as she said, "Now I understand why the Queen looks at you with such affection. It's because of two life-saving favors. No wonder, no wonder!" Then, her tone shifted to one of disbelief as she hesitated and asked, "But tell me, Xiang Kui, have you really killed someone?"
Xiang Ri exaggerated a bit as he replied, "Killed? Of course, I have. The number of people who've died by my hand is no fewer than eight hundred, if not a thousand. Just last night, I—"
Before he could finish, Fang Yingying interrupted, her gaze sharp with suspicion. "You're not telling me you killed someone last night too, are you?" Her expression froze, her eyes filled with complexity as she looked at him. "You didn't, did you? And that sudden 'thank you' from the Queen... Could it be that the prince who came yesterday was the one you killed?"
"Sometimes, women are too clever for their own good, and that's why they end up unmarried," Xiang Ri neither confirmed nor denied, but the implication was clear.
If anyone were to tell Xiang Ri that "women are big-breasted but brainless," he would be sure to deliver a good beating to such a person. The secretary in front of him completely defied that notion. While he had known she was sharp, he hadn't expected her to be so perceptive as to uncover the truth from just a few of his words.
"You really killed someone..." Fang Yingying's expression was one of stunned disbelief, a mixture of fear and concern as she processed the revelation.
"For the sake of my own safety and that of those around me, killing a few people is no problem," Xiang Ri said calmly, though his eyes revealed a hint of cold resolve.
Fang Yingying snapped out of her shock, staring at him for a long while before finally speaking, "So your purpose in coming to France wasn't to inspect the branch office, was it? It was to eliminate a threat..." Her tone suddenly became sharp, "You bastard! You almost got me killed, do you know that? Now you've taken everything, left me here, and don't care whether I live or die! Listen up—if I die, I'll haunt you every night, making sure you have nightmares every day!"
Seeing the secretary's fierce yet inwardly trembling expression, Xiang Ri knew she was still reeling from the shock his words had inflicted. He let out a silent sigh of relief and, with a mischievous grin, quipped, "Don't worry, when you come to find me, I won't be haunting you with nightmares; instead, I'll only indulge in... daydreams."
"You bastard! Daydreams, huh?" Fang Yingying gritted her teeth, the words triggering memories of what she had witnessed upon waking that very morning. Her eyes widened in fury. "Tell me! How do you explain the fact that you touched my chest while I was asleep and were about to kiss me?"
"I can explain that," Xiang Ri thought to himself, cursing inwardly for letting the matter spiral. He quickly devised an explanation. "Actually, um... you were lying on top of me, pressing down so hard that my blood circulation was cut off, and half my body went numb. So I tried to push you off."
"And you decided to push me *there*?" Fang Yingying's anger flared even more. "And what about bringing your face so close?"
"That was... I noticed a small black spot on your lips and thought I should wipe it off." The words slipped out smoothly before Xiang Ri could think better of it, and he quickly found another excuse, almost without thinking.
"Are you telling me you planned to wipe it off... with your mouth?"
"Well, you see, my left hand was busy pushing you off, and my right hand was being used as your pillow, so I had no choice but to use my mouth."
"So, you're saying all of this is my fault for misunderstanding you?"
"That's not what I said; that's what *you* said!" Xiang Ri shot back, immediately making his escape, knowing full well that the secretary was about to explode in fury.
