Chapter 2: The Gift Revealed
Jamie quickly proved how extraordinary his gift was. On his first day in Newt's home, he wandered into the greenhouse, where a group of Bowtruckles eyed him suspiciously from their perch on a tree. Newt watched from the doorway, ready to intervene, but to his astonishment, Jamie crouched down and began speaking softly. Though Newt couldn't understand the words, the Bowtruckles responded, climbing down the tree to sit on Jamie's outstretched hands.
"How did you do that?" Newt asked, stepping closer.
Jamie looked up with a shy smile. "They told me they like you. They said you take good care of them."
Newt's eyes widened. "You can communicate with them?"
Jamie nodded. "It's not just talking. It's like… feeling what they feel."
Newt realized he had found someone truly remarkable. Over the following weeks, Jamie's bond with the creatures in Newt's care grew stronger. A baby Hippogriff, usually skittish around strangers, let Jamie stroke its beak. Even the mischievous Niffler seemed to calm down in Jamie's presence, offering him shiny trinkets it had stolen as if in gratitude.
One afternoon, Newt decided to test Jamie's gift further. He introduced him to Tempest, the majestic Thunderbird. Jamie approached with awe, holding out his hand. To Newt's amazement, Tempest lowered its head, allowing Jamie to touch its feathers.
"He's beautiful," Jamie whispered. "He says he remembers you saving him."
Newt felt a lump in his throat. "Jamie, your gift isn't just rare—it's extraordinary. I've met many wizards and witches, but none with your connection to creatures."
Jamie beamed, for the first time feeling pride in his ability.
As days turned into weeks, Jamie's presence seemed to breathe new life into Newt's home. The once-solitary magizoologist found himself sharing meals, stories, and quiet moments with his new ward. Jamie's laughter echoed in the house as he played with the creatures, his wonder contagious.
