Chapter 1: A New Home
Rain pattered against the windows of the small house on the edge of a forest in Dorset. Inside, warmth and coziness filled the air. A fire crackled in the hearth, and the scent of freshly baked cookies lingered. Newt Scamander sat in his worn armchair, a book about rare dragon species in hand, while his Niffler climbed around a shelf, searching for shiny trinkets.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Newt looked up, puzzled by the late-night visitor. He set the book aside and opened the door. Standing before him was a young boy, drenched from the rain, with messy brown hair and wide hazel eyes that stared at Newt with a mixture of fear and determination.
"Hello," Newt said gently, crouching to the boy's level. "What brings you here?"
The boy hesitated, clutching a small, well-worn teddy bear to his chest. "I ran away," he said quietly. "I didn't belong there. But the animals… they told me to find you."
Newt blinked in surprise. "The animals told you?"
The boy nodded. "I can hear them. Understand them. They said you would help me."
Newt studied the boy, noting the mud on his shoes and the faint scratches on his hands, as if he'd been wandering through the forest for days. "What's your name?" he asked.
"Jamie," the boy replied. "Jamie Carter."
Newt opened the door wider. "Well, Jamie, you'd better come in before you catch a cold."
As Jamie stepped inside, his wide eyes roamed over the strange and wondrous objects scattered around the room. A puff of glittering dust rose as he brushed past a peculiar plant. A soft chirping came from a small cage on the mantle, where a Doxy fluttered its wings. Jamie's face lit up, a small smile creeping across his lips despite his exhaustion.
"Do all these belong to you?" Jamie asked.
"They do," Newt replied. "Though, truthfully, I feel more like I belong to them."
Jamie gave a tiny laugh, the sound timid but warm. "I think I'd like that."
