Chapter 15: Chapter 015 Blind Date
The next morning was a Saturday, and Qi Yue had intended to sleep in, but was instead woken up by a phone call.
Seeing "Mom" flashed on the caller ID, Qi Yue's expression immediately sank.
Song Qiuqiu, groggy from sleep, poked her head out from under the covers and, seeing the look on Qi Yue's face, hazily guessed who was calling, "Is it your mom again? She hasn't given up! You haven't even graduated yet, and she's already pushing you to go on blind dates, isn't that a bit too anxious?"
Qi Yue stared at the phone, a cold indifference that was beyond her years creeping onto her usually lively face.
No matter how happy her current life was, the mere thought of those things could tear apart and destroy all that was beautiful…
…
She had been frail as a child and grew up in the countryside with her grandparents and Second Uncle.
Even though the countryside conditions couldn't compare to the city, she lived a very happy life.
Her Second Uncle was said to be an athlete, but he practiced a mix of everything: shooting, fencing, boxing, and free fighting—he knew a bit of each.
In the end, he seemed to have found the ultimate purpose of existence in planting potatoes, and suddenly ran back to the countryside to farm potatoes, finding it more interesting than anything else.
As a child, Qi Yue followed her Second Uncle and learned a lot from him; after shooting, she learned fencing, followed by free fighting. She couldn't keep up with the pace of learning new things as fast as Second Uncle switched them.
In the end, she admitted, "Sorry, Second Uncle, I'm tired. I want to plant potatoes too…"
With the meticulous care from her grandparents and the energetic training with Second Uncle, her health improved steadily, and she started to make a name for herself in sports, earning numerous medals in shooting and fencing.
Even her shooting skills surpassed those of her younger sister Qi Zhen, who had grown up always by their parents' side.
Her father, Qi Qianli, was once a member of the national shooting team and was very strong; unlike Second Uncle, who was always distracted by different interests, he devoted his life to shooting. But his greatest regret was never winning that championship medal, the symbol of the highest honour.
Therefore, he placed all his hopes for victory on his daughters.
Because Qi Yue was often sickly, he sent her to the countryside to recuperate and focused on training her younger sister Qi Zhen.
It wasn't until Qi Yue's health improved and she displayed her talent in shooting that Qi Qianli brought her back to live with them.
Initially uncomfortable with the city upon her return, Qi Yue buried herself into her studies and training, and her progress was rapid.
However, Qi Zhen felt that Qi Yue stole the attention and glory in shooting that should have been hers, and several times she threatened to run away from home and even told her parents that she was suffering from depression.
Unable to cope, the parents subtly suggested to Qi Yue that she should stop practicing shooting temporarily so as not to upset Qi Zhen.
Qi Yue couldn't understand this, as she didn't even want to return to the city; it was they who insisted on having her back. And besides, her shooting was taught by Second Uncle, not them; what right did they have to ask her to give up?
Qi Yue did not agree.
Later, before a major competition, Qi Zhen, in a frenzy, approached Qi Yue and forced her to promise that whoever lost the upcoming match would never touch shooting ever again.
At that time, it was clear that Qi Yue's shooting level was stronger than Qi Zhen's, and although she didn't like Qi Zhen, she didn't want to easily erase her sister's years of effort with a victory, so she didn't want to agree.
But Qi Zhen had lost her reason and kept persisting, even calling in their parents to witness the commitment.
Young and hot-headed, and seeing her parents' preference for Qi Zhen, Qi Yue eventually agreed spitefully.
As for the scene of that competition, she no longer wanted to recall it…
All she remembered clearly was her parents' expressions at the time of the match.
Each time she scored higher than Qi Zhen, their parents always looked distressed.
And whenever she scored lower than Qi Zhen, they'd show faces of sheer joy.
On the same competition field, yet their gazes were always, unfalteringly fixed on Qi Zhen.
Such undisguised bias…
She worked hard to adapt to her new life, to improve her shooting, to try to integrate into this family.
But what she got in the end was…
Stop shooting…
Don't upset Qi Zhen…
Qi Yue couldn't express how she felt at that moment—as if she had been abandoned by the whole world.
The most important thing in a shooting competition is the mindset, and in the end, she was indeed affected, making a severe mistake with one of the shots.
Actually, even with that error, her score was still in the lead.
In the end, she withdrew from the competition halfway and left the field.
