Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Poor Xia Wan
Xia Wan dragged her exhausted body, step by step, moving forward as if every step required all the strength she had left.
She had no idea how long she had been walking, but she knew she couldn't pass out here—she had to hold on!
Finally, after a long and arduous journey, Xia Wan arrived at the Liuguang Villa District.
The villas stood one after another, and the people who lived here were all wealthy elites of the city.
She looked down at her disheveled appearance, and a deep sense of inferiority surged within her.
If she just barged in like this, those people would definitely mock her cruelly, or worse, they might even make a move on her.
At this thought, Xia Wan shivered and decided to take a more discreet route to enter.
So, she carefully circled to the back of the villa, searching for what she hoped was the "back door."
When she finally found it and gently pushed open the old door, a cacophony of voices reached her ears.
It turned out that her stepmother, Liu Fang, and Xia Lianqing were sitting in the spacious and bright living room, chatting and laughing. At times, they spoke in whispers, and at other times, they laughed heartily. The intimate atmosphere made it obvious that there was a strong familial bond between them.
Xia Wan silently closed the door behind her and tiptoed up the stairs, trying not to make a sound.
She climbed all the way to the top floor loft. With every step, the wooden floor creaked slightly beneath her, as if reminding her of the age and dilapidation of the place.
Finally, reaching her destination, Xia Wan took a deep breath and slowly pushed open the door.
In an instant, a strong musty smell hit her face, making her cough uncontrollably.
Looking around, the room was filled with all kinds of clutter, haphazardly arranged. It was clear this had once been a storage room for unused items.
The only noteworthy feature was the narrow bed in the corner, just one meter wide.
Xia Wan quickly walked into the room, stripped off her dirty outer clothes, and put on the clean clothes she had brought with her.
Next, she rummaged through her bag and pulled out a foundation, carefully applying it to her neck to try and cover the glaring hickeys.
Just as she was fully focused on her makeup, there was a sudden loud knock on the door: "Knock knock knock knock knock!"
The sound was like a death knell, sending chills down her spine.
Xia Wan's heart tightened, and she thought to herself: Has someone discovered that I'm here? It seems like they're here to cause trouble.
Hearing the urgent knocks from outside, Xia Wan's heart sank.
She quickly jumped out of bed, hurried to the door, and opened it without hesitation.
However, the familiar, loathsome face that greeted her was none other than Liu Fang.
Liu Fang stood with her arms crossed, glaring at Xia Wan with a look of displeasure, her eyes fiery with anger.
Then, her sharp, piercing voice shattered the calm of the morning: "Xia Wan! Look at the time! You're still lying in bed, sleeping in like a lazy bum! Get up and make breakfast! Do you really think you're the young lady of the Xia family?"
Xia Wan silently lowered her head, a trace of helplessness and grievance flashing in her eyes.
In fact, she wasn't the true young lady of the Xia family. Years ago, the biological daughter of the Xia family mysteriously disappeared, plunging the entire household into deep sorrow.
Soon after, the Xia family's business started to plummet, and in desperation, Xia Tianfu, believing in superstitions, took Liu Fang to seek a fortune teller.
According to their so-called destiny, they adopted Xia Wan.
Since Xia Wan came into the family, a miracle seemed to happen.
The Xia company began to receive one big order after another, and business
For Xia Wan, Summer Tianfu's attitude could be described as indifferent—there was neither excessive affection nor any hatred.
But Liu Fang was completely different. She always believed that Xia Wan was the one who caused her biological daughter to suffer outside, so she constantly vented her anger on Xia Wan.
On a daily basis, Liu Fang would find various excuses to scold Xia Wan, and sometimes she would even deliberately deny her food. However, she never assigned any heavy physical labor to Xia Wan.
It wasn't that Liu Fang had a kind heart, but rather because a fortune-teller had once said: "Before Xia Wan reaches adulthood, she must be treated well. The more smoothly her life goes, the more prosperous the Xia family business will become..."
Although Summer Tianfu would occasionally mutter that Xia Wan should not be treated badly, he hadn't taken any real actions.
He never showed any intention of treating Xia Wan specially. However, she did receive basic opportunities for education and enough food to sustain her...
Just yesterday, Xia Wan had turned 18 years old, and according to the fortune-teller's prediction, from today onward, she could be mistreated.
So Liu Fang was eager to make things difficult for her, and just yesterday, she insisted that Xia Wan move to the attic.
As for Xia Lianqing, she had only been found a few months ago. After Liu Fang found her biological daughter, not only did she show no kindness to Xia Wan, but after hearing about all the suffering Xia Wan had gone through, Liu Fang's hatred for her only deepened, though she forced herself to suppress her anger...
Xia Wan obediently nodded and turned to go downstairs to prepare breakfast.
As she walked past Liu Fang, Liu Fang's sharp eyes immediately caught sight of the clear hickey on Xia Wan's neck.
Without hesitation, she reached out, swiftly parted Xia Wan's long, black hair, and pointed directly at the hickey. A mocking smile spread across her face as she asked coldly, "Where did you go fooling around?"
Xia Wan blinked her big, watery eyes, showing an innocent expression, and sweetly responded, "Huh? What do you mean?"
Liu Fang's face flushed with rage, her neck veins bulging as she angrily shouted, "Look at this! These hickeys on your neck, so obvious! Just turned 18, and you couldn't control yourself, going out and messing around with those scoundrels. Do you have any shame?"
The loud reprimand was like a thunderclap, instantly attracting Xia Lianqing, who was downstairs, to come running up.
Xia Lianqing, only 25 years old, was wearing a bright red dress, her figure gracefully twisting as she ascended the stairs.
Her sharp, harsh expression was exactly like her mother's.
Then, a sharp, sarcastic voice rang out: "Mom! What's going on? Why are you so mad?"
Liu Fang turned to look at her biological daughter and felt a surge of pride—indeed, her darling daughter was beautiful.
Her tone immediately softened, and she said slowly, "Xiao Lian, I just can't stand it, seeing some people being so loose and reckless. At such a young age, they couldn't wait to go out and mess with those questionable characters..."
Xia Lianqing glanced at Xia Wan, curled up in the corner. Her fury erupted like a volcano—every time she saw Xia Wan's delicate face, it made her feel envious and resentful. How could a girl who was adopted look so stunning? The more she looked, the more angry she became.
She scrutinized Xia Wan like she was examining an object, her gaze finally landing on the delicate neck where a web of hickeys could be seen... It seemed that her plot from yesterday had succeeded.
A mocking smile appeared on her lips as she said, "Xia Wan, look at you, what a disgusting sight."
Xia Wan shot a furious glare at the instigator, her body trembling with anger. "Xia Lianqing, you schemed against me! Yesterday at the restaurant, you pretended to be kind and handed me a drink. I thought you were suddenly being nice, but you had drugged my drink."
It was all her fault for being so naive—if she could turn out better, even a pig could climb a tree.
Xia Lianqing, far from feeling guilty, arrogantly crossed her arms over her chest and defiantly shouted, "So what? I just can't stand you, I did it on purpose. What are you going to do about it?"
"Smack!"
Xia Wan couldn't take it anymore, raising her hand and slapping her hard, like a gust of wind.
Xia Lianqing didn't expect Xia Wan, who was so small and fragile, to slap so painfully, and even dared to hit her... Wasn't the old Xia Wan someone who would never fight back?
Furious and humiliated, Xia Lianqing raised her hand to retaliate, but Xia Wan easily caught her wrist. Calmly, she said, "Don't think you can bully me again. Don't push me, because I have nothing to lose, and I'm not afraid of you."
Xia Lianqing, trembling with rage, stammered, "Y-you..."
