Chapter 10: The Meeting(4)
Karl stepped out of the grand hall, his sharp ruby-red eyes narrowing against the bluish light spilling across the alien yet breathtaking scenery before him. The air felt alive, charged with an otherworldly energy that crackled faintly around him like static on his skin. Mountains loomed in the distance, their snow-laden peaks wreathed in shifting silver mist. Below, an iridescent river twisted through the valley, its shimmering surface dancing with colors that defied description, as though the light itself held a secret language. The scenery seemed to mock reality, too surreal and magnificent to belong to any mortal realm.
Karl's lips curled into a faint smile. He tilted his head back, taking in the alien skies, where the suns bathed the land in a soft, ethereal glow. A faint breeze stirred his dark hair, carrying a scent that was both unfamiliar and intoxicating—a mix of wildflowers, metallic tang, and raw power. He inhaled deeply, feeling the charged air seep into his very being. The faint tremor of anticipation coursing through him was a heady reminder: this world was a stage, and he intended to dominate it.
The sharp clack of boots against the marble platform broke his reverie. Glancing over his shoulder, Karl saw the other family heads emerging one by one. Their expressions varied—some were awestruck, others guarded, but all carried the unspoken weight of responsibility and expectation.
"Well," Karl said, his voice smooth and confident, cutting through the silence like a blade. "It seems we've been given quite the spectacle. But staring at it won't get us anywhere." His crimson eyes gleamed, brimming with both curiosity and the quiet determination of a predator. Without waiting for a response, he stepped forward to the platform's edge.
"Don't—" someone began, but the words were lost as Karl leaned forward and dropped.
The other Progenitors rushed to the edge, their eyes widening in horror. Below, Karl's body crashed against the jagged rocks, folding in on itself with a sickening crunch. Limbs twisted at grotesque angles, crimson pooling beneath his shattered form. Luminara turned away, a hand to her mouth, while Shay cursed under his breath. For a moment, silence hung heavy, broken only by the faint howl of the wind.
Then, the impossible happened. Smoke began to rise from Karl's broken body, curling upward like shadowy wraiths. His limbs jerked unnaturally as bones snapped into place, sinew weaving itself back together in an eerie dance of regeneration. In mere moments, he stood again, whole and unscathed, save for bloodstained clothes and a smug grin etched across his face.
"Worry too much," Karl called, his voice ringing out like a challenge. With a flash of crimson and a burst of supernatural speed, he was gone, leaving only a trail of dust.
The stunned silence that followed was palpable. Shay broke it first, his fists clenching as he muttered, "If Karl can do that, then so can I." He stepped toward the edge, muscles tensing for a leap.
"Stop!" Luminara's voice cut through the air like a whip. Her luminous form stepped forward, the faint glow of celestial energy radiating from her figure. Even with her face obscured by a veil of shimmering light, her commanding presence froze Shay in his tracks.
"What now, Luminara?" Shay asked, irritation thick in his voice. "You don't seriously think I can't handle this."
"Not like Karl, you can't," she said sharply. "Do you think your body will just put itself back together after a fall like that? Karl's a vampire. His regenerative abilities are part of who he is. You? You'll be splattered across those rocks."
Shay glared at her, defiance flickering in his amber eyes. "So what's your grand suggestion, oh wise one? Just stand here and wait?"
Luminara's lips curved into a sly smile beneath her veil. "Or you could use your brain. But then, thinking has never been your strong suit, has it?"
The others chuckled softly as Shay's scowl deepened. "You're insufferable," he muttered.
"And you're reckless," she retorted with a playful lilt. Before he could respond, she stepped to the edge. Golden light flared at her back, and wings of radiant energy unfurled, catching the wind with an almost divine grace. With one fluid motion, she leapt, gliding down to the valley below like a celestial being descending to Earth.
"Show-off," Shay growled.
Chloe, the Demon Progenitor, laughed, her crimson eyes sparkling with mischief. "See you at the bottom, Shay. Don't keep us waiting!" She stepped forward, her own black, leathery wings unfurling with a crack. With a playful smirk and a mocking salute, she launched herself into the air, diving toward Luminara with reckless joy.
The Titan Progenitor grunted, stepping to the edge. Without a word, he summoned a slab of rock from the ground, stepped onto it, and began his descent, the floating platform obeying his command. Shay's eyes lit up with hope. "Hey, mind giving me a lift?"
The Titan Progenitor shot him a stony glare. "Find your own way," he said, his deep voice rumbling like an avalanche. The slab dipped lower, leaving Shay grumbling.
One by one, the others descended. Daniel, the Dragon Progenitor, leapt into the air, his leathery wings unfurling with a majestic sweep as he soared downward. The Phoenix Progenitor followed, flames licking at his form as he used jets of fire to control his glide. The Abyssal Progenitor vanished with a ripple in the air, teleporting away without so much as a glance at the others. Greg, the Human Progenitor, simply scaled the cliff, his every movement precise and fluid, his agility a testament to his perfect control over his body.
Finally, all eyes turned to Alex, who stood silently at the edge. Elemental energy crackled around him, a symphony of fire, water, air, and lightning swirling in harmony. His eyes gleamed with a kaleidoscope of colors, reflecting the immense power within him. For a moment, he closed his eyes, letting the elements guide him. Then, with a deep breath, he stepped forward.
A gust of wind caught him, and he rode it down like a leaf carried by a storm. The elements obeyed him effortlessly, fire bursting beneath him for propulsion, water condensing to stabilize his flight, and air cushioning his descent. He landed softly, the elements dissipating around him in a brilliant display of light.
The group stood together at the base, their breaths mingling in the cool air, except for Shay, who lingered above. The stones, warm and faintly pulsating in their hands, seemed to resonate with the land itself. Alex's gaze swept over his companions, his eyes reflecting the kaleidoscope of elements swirling within him.
"Let's see what this world has in store for us," he said, his voice steady and calm, yet carrying the weight of a promise. He raised his stone slightly, its light flaring in response, casting long shadows on the alien terrain. "With these stones, we carve our path."
