The Beastmaster System: God Pet begs me to evolve

Chapter 40: The Big Gamble of Three

"Kent, well done. Looks like you've been hiding your abilities all along."

Mr. He, the class leader, praised from a distance. With his strong abilities and a beast companion of lord-level strength, he was doing his best to manage the chaos with the swarming bats.

He had just witnessed Kent's exceptional monster-slaying skills, and couldn't help but feel impressed. Kent's performance was clearly far superior to that of the other students.

Kent waved his hand nonchalantly, modestly replying, "Compared to you, Instructor, I still have a long way to go. My goal is to surpass you by the time I turn twenty."

These words made everyone want to spit blood. That was a unique form of self-deprecation—if anything, it was more like an over-the-top boast.

"You really don't know your place, do you? You think you can surpass the instructor in two years? That's laughable," said Leng Zimu sarcastically.

Zhao Zhi also chimed in, "Haha, this is the dumbest boast I've ever heard. You won't be able to do it even if you lived for a hundred years."

Kent gave them a cold glance but didn't reply, then suddenly had an idea. He loudly declared, "Since Leng Zimu and Zhao Zhi doubt me so much, how about we make a bet?"

"A bet? Fine, how do you want to bet?" Leng Zimu said confidently, not afraid.

Kent said, "From what I know, both of your beasts are level 25 and 29, while mine is only level 22. Let's bet on which of our beasts breaks through to level 30 and becomes a leader-level beast first. What do you say? Do you dare?"

"Haha... You really don't know your limits. You think you can make such a bet? Alright, I'll take it," Leng Zimu sneered as he cut down another bat.

Zhao Zhi frowned. "Kent, I've never met someone dumber than you. Fine, we'll bet, but we're not interested in gambling with a bunch of worthless things. It's no fun unless it's something big."

"That's right, I only gamble for big stakes. No interest in betting on something cheap," Leng Zimu agreed.

Kent smiled slyly. "So what would you consider a big bet?"

"I think that little cat of yours is pretty good. Too bad beasts can only be contracted once in their lifetime. So, how about you bet your full set of B-level combat gear instead?" Leng Zimu provoked him with a wicked grin.

Zhao Zhi added, "No way, we're betting against both of us, and the B-level gear is only one set. If he wins, he's won against both of us; if we win, we only beat him. It's not worth it unless he's hiding something else."

Kent raised an eyebrow at Zhao Zhi, impressed by his businesslike thinking. This guy was certainly the descendant of a merchant, never willing to retreat even a step for the sake of profit.

"Fine," Kent said, "if I lose, I'll give you two million credit points, or if I can't, I'll work as your servant. How does that sound?"

"Alright, I accept," Zhao Zhi laughed.

Zhao Mengxi and the others frowned. While the rest of the group was battling the bats, some students had been injured, yet these three were busy gambling away. What kind of situation was this?

Kent, however, wasn't concerned with anything other than making a scene. He raised his voice, "Instructor He, you're here as a witness. You're the official judge of this bet."

Mr. He shook his head without saying a word, but the three took his silence as tacit approval.

Kent then switched gears, "I may not have much, and I'm clearly at a disadvantage in this bet. So, according to usual betting rules, the stakes you two offer should at least be several times, or even ten times, what I'm offering. After all, I'm sure you've never been taught to back out once you've agreed to something, right?"

Leng Zimu and Zhao Zhi were immediately angered. Damn it, Kent had set a trap for them. They had suspected he was up to something.

But Kent made a valid point, and they couldn't find a reasonable counterargument. They clearly had the upper hand in this bet.

"Kent, are you out of your mind?" Zhao Zhi said coldly, "Do you really think you can win? You're just asking for trouble, and you'll regret this for the rest of your life."

Kent smiled mischievously, pushing further, "You're not afraid of a little risk, are you? If you've got the guts, show it. Otherwise, just back out and pretend this never happened. But if you're a man, then let's see your courage. Step up!"

This kind of provoking talk had a strange effect on impulsive individuals, and both Zhao Zhi and Leng Zimu were no exception.

"Hmph... Don't try to provoke me. If you're really looking for trouble, I'll give it to you. I, Zhao Zhi, accept the bet, and my stake is four million credit points."

Kent internally grinned, but kept his expression calm. "Four million credit points? How shabby."

Then, the spotlight turned to Leng Zimu, who was too proud to back down.

"If I, Leng Zimu, lose, I'll give you a full set of A-level combat gear," he declared loudly. But even as he spoke, a slight flaw in his words was revealed.

Kent immediately pointed it out: "I know that A-level gear comes in three grades: lower, middle, and upper. The lower grade costs three million credit points, the middle grade costs four million, and the upper grade costs five million. Given your status, you must be referring to the upper-grade gear, right?"

Leng Zimu's face darkened. He hadn't expected Kent to catch on so quickly. But he quickly regained his composure and responded without hesitation, "That's right. With my family's wealth and my noble status, I wouldn't bother betting anything lower than top-tier gear."

Kent frowned but didn't get angry. He simply nodded and concluded, "Alright then, we have a deal. The stakes are set. If anyone fails to honor their part, they will face the wrath of their entire family."

His ominous words made many people in the crowd look at him with surprise. Kent was well-known as an orphan, so making such a harsh vow was both shocking and unsettling.

Just as Leng Zimu and Zhao Zhi were considering whether to change the terms of the bet, instructors arrived with reinforcements.

With the support of other instructors, the tide of the battle quickly shifted in favor of the humans. The bats started retreating, and their leader, the level 30 bat king, was the first to flee.

However, it wasn't so easy for them to leave.

Mr. He and another instructor managed to force the bat king to stay, and it was ultimately slain, leaving behind a pile of blood and flesh.

In the end, more than two hundred dark blood bats were slain, while only a handful managed to escape.

The injured students received immediate medical attention, preventing any fatal injuries. However, due to the viruses carried by the bats, all those with even minor wounds had their injuries thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and their wounds were bandaged promptly.
