Chapter 39: Dark Frost Bats
When these words were spoken, Leng Zimu's anger flared, and his gaze toward Zhao Mengxi became even more intense.
"Alright, let's put this matter to rest. It's only 4 AM, the perfect time for nocturnal creatures to emerge. We need to stay vigilant," said Headmaster He, holding a battle sword in one hand while using a searchlight in the other to scan the area, warding off any nocturnal creatures.
Kent and Zhao Mengxi followed closely behind.
Suddenly, strange sounds appeared ahead, growing louder with a piercing screech that made everyone's ears ring painfully.
"Not good, a swarm of bat-like monsters," Headmaster He stopped, tightening his grip on his battle sword, and the other students raised their heads, looking up at the sky.
Less than a minute later, they saw a large swarm of blood-red creatures flying toward them. Kent quickly read the monster's attributes.
Monster Name: Dark Frost Bat
Monster Rank: Silver Intermediate
Monster Level: 21-30
...
Abilities:
Sonic shockwave.Blood-sucking frenzy and charging attack.Control of cold air, bringing frost to plants and trees.
Weaknesses:
Sensitive to strong light, unable to look directly at it.Afraid of fire or high-temperature objects.
"Indeed," Leng Zimu frowned. "Do you feel how cold it is?"
The other students pulled their collars tighter, responding, "Could it be the Dark Frost Bats?"
Headmaster He said grimly, "Exactly, it's these vampires. Everyone, get ready. If you have battle helmets, put them on. We can't escape; we'll have to wait for other instructors to bring reinforcements."
The group immediately tensed up, their spirits rising. A group of giant bats, as large as goats, would surely be thrilling to fight.
There were more than two hundred of the Dark Frost Bats, and leading them was a 30th-level bat king, the size of a buffalo. With a shrill cry, the bat king signaled its followers, and they screeched in unison, charging toward the group.
Kent summoned Garfield to guard him, while Zhao Mengxi summoned her fire beast, launching fireballs that repelled many of the bats.
"They're afraid of fire, so stick close to Zhao Mengxi," Headmaster He quickly advised.
Kent drew his bow, aiming carefully at a 23rd-level bat, and shared his innate power from Wukong. Though Wukong was only level 10, his innate high rank gave him the strength of several hundred kilograms, making it easy for Kent to draw the bow.
Whoosh!
The iron arrow flew through the air, striking the bat's fragile wing and causing it to screech in pain.
"Wow, didn't expect you to be able to shoot arrows," Zhao Mengxi laughed, though she added, "But that aim, I really can't help but want to comment on it."
Kent ignored her, continuing to shoot. While he didn't hit any vital spots, each arrow still caused significant damage.
After shooting ten arrows, he picked up his battle sword and sighed, "No choice, grew up poor, never had a chance to learn. I've only been practicing for three days."
"Three days, who would believe that?" Leng Zimu scoffed.
"Yeah, what can you do in three days? It's impossible to master archery in such a short time. Archery is physically demanding, and your arms get sore. Unless you have a personal trainer and high-level medicine to support your practice, it's not realistic," Zhao Shi sneered.
Kent frowned, too lazy to argue with this brainless person. After a day of contact, hadn't they figured out who he was?
He was wearing full B-grade battle gear, worth at least two million dollars; was it possible he couldn't even afford a club?
Indeed, not many people responded to Zhao Shi's comment—Zhao's brothers weren't exactly popular.
Suddenly, the bat king let out a terrifying shriek that echoed like the wailing of thousands of ghosts, sending chills down everyone's spine.
But the effect was even greater: all the bats stopped attacking, hanging in mid-air. They opened their blood-red mouths and unleashed fierce cold gusts, so low in temperature that even the moisture in the air froze into frost.
The cold gusts collided in mid-air, forming a swirling vortex of icy wind that rushed toward them.
Kent's expression changed. These ugly creatures were smart—they were using force to break through their defenses, aiming to separate the group and then strike them individually.
"Scatter!" Headmaster He shouted.
All the students quickly dispersed. If that cold wave hit them, they'd likely be frozen solid.
Zhao Mengxi activated her beast-control spatial displacement ability, instantly moving out of the way. Kent used his high-jump ability to leap away.
In the chaos, the group was split up, and the bats screeched excitedly as they charged at the separated individuals.
Kent had barely landed when three bats targeted him. Their claws were sharp enough to pierce through iron.
Kent swung his battle sword and unleashed the first strike of the Dragon Breath technique, "Submerged Dragon Emerging," stabbing directly into the first bat's head. It felt like slicing through tofu, and a spray of blood followed.
"Not bad, this B-grade sword is really something," Kent muttered.
He continued to slash, cutting down two more bats with rapid, precise strikes.
"Seems like these monsters aren't as terrifying as they looked. Just a little scary in appearance," Kent said as he looked around, surprised to see his classmates still fumbling and panicking, struggling to handle the creatures. It dawned on him—when did he become so strong?
What he didn't realize was that his classmates didn't have innate strength like Wukong, or Garfield's agility, nor did they possess B-grade swords. Even if they hit, they couldn't deal a fatal blow.
At this moment, the bats seemed to realize that Zhao Mengxi's fire beast was a threat. Over a dozen bats flew toward her with reckless abandon, ready to rip her apart.
Kent didn't hesitate. He leaped over, slicing through one bat in mid-air, then landing beside Zhao Mengxi to protect her.
"As long as I'm here, don't worry. I promise you won't lose a single hair," Kent declared with confidence.
"At a time like this, you're still cracking jokes?" Zhao Mengxi rolled her eyes, continuing to control the fire beast to launch fireballs.
More than ten bats charged at them, their faces twisted in fury, their claws extended to tear Zhao Mengxi into pieces.
Kent had Garfield protect them, while he skillfully wielded his battle sword, moving with lightning speed, creating a web of slashes that blocked most of the bats. Garfield, as a top-tier beast, was not to be underestimated. It moved like a shadow, tearing apart any bats that managed to slip through the defense, leaving behind showers of blood.
