Chapter 9: Chapter 9 - Sensory deprivation

Aoi's hurting. Akio knows it. However...

- "I love you too."

Akio hugs his beloved back. That hurts too, but this declaration of love is priceless. No pain can separate them. After a bit, Akio gets up, putting on his tattered outfit as Aoi uses her water magic to soothe the pain in her body.

- "Hey.. aren't you going to change your outfit? That one has almost been turned to rags now."

- "I won't change until I have the strength to beat him. It's my responsibility."

Akio looks towards Aoi, who's nodding at him slowly. Afterwards, both of them head back to the headquarters. Apparently, Akio slept for over a day, so Genkei is free for today. Aoi heads towards her office, as Akio greets Jack before opening the reinforced doors...

- "Someone's early."

From within the room, Genkei's voice is heard. The Wind General is meditating, as Akio steps in.

- "I need to get stronger, Genkei."

- "You need to rest your body. You'll tear yourself apart if you do this."

- "There is no time to rest."

Genkei opens his eyes, witnessing Akio's change in aura and attittude. The pure aura that Akio's exuding right now is so heavy that Genkei can barely breathe.

- "Alright."

Before their spar, Genkei grabs earplugs and a blindfold, putting them on Akio's ears and eyes respectively.

Akio stands tall, as Genkei prepares to fight him. Normally, he (Genkei) would like to be the one fighting with sensory deprivation first, but Akio wouldn't allow it.

With this.. the sparring begins. Genkei gave Akio a signal, that being sending a small blast of wind onto his hand. Akio lunges at Genkei, whom he considers to be in front of him. While his assumption was right, though, it didn't mean that it'd work.

Genkei dodges Akio's attack, blasting him back. Hitting the wall, Akio gets angry, as he tries to sense Genkei's energy. No matter how much he does so, however, nothing seems to happen.

Seeing that nothing's happening, Genkei runs towards Akio, preparing a punch. Akio, meanwhile, is trying to put into action the pointers that Genkei gave him:

"You know how to sense your own energy, right? Try increasing the range of that sensitivity. Try to sense magic energy outside of your body."

- (As if I'd be able to to it...)

In the end, Genkei punches Akio in the gut, as the latter spits blood. However, Akio felt a new sensation.

When Genkei's fist made contact with Akio's body, the latter managed to sense Genkei's magic energy, if only for a split second. With just that, Akio was able to partially assume and materialize Genkei's location, throwing a fireball.

Surprisingly, it does land. However, it was too weak. Genkei's face is simply turned to the right, but as he looks at Akio again, he wears a proud smile.

- "Good, good. He's using touch, though."

Genkei falls back, hitting the ground.

"How about this..?"

Akio is left in the dark again, as suddenly, he's thrown upwards by an attack from the ground. Genkei implanted his wind magic onto the ground, blindsiding Akio. It was easy for him to sense energy from another living being, but an inanimate object is another story.

Genkei's assumption was indeed correct, but he decides to hone Akio's sensory with simple magic-infused punches. Through that, he will advance. Genkei's punch makes contact, as Akio instantly materializes Genkei's approximate location again, punching him in the chest with his own flaming punch.

"That's it. Come on, Akio!"

Akio's slowly getting the hang of it. Genkei throws a barrage of punches at Akio, who feels the magic from all of them, being able to counter at the moment of impact. Even so, being deprived of his sight means that he doesn't exactly know what Genkei will do next.

Stopping the barrage, Genkei kicks Akio from behind. Akio does retaliate with a fireball, but it didn't necessarily do anything. Afterwards, Genkei hits the ground again, as a gust of wind hits Akio upwards.

Genkei now throws a barrage of a punches at the ground, using his magic to hit Akio from the ground, believing that Akio will be able to adapt...

...

...

...and adapt he did. After being hit a few times from all directions with Genkei's wind magic, Akio is finally able to feel just the magic on impact, as he envelops himself with fire magic and pushing said magic outwards.

While he can't extend it a lot, it's enough to help Akio sense the magic just before the moment of impact, allowing him to dodge. This both impresses and excites Genkei, who decides to take the training up a notch.

The Wind General throws a sucker gust1 at Akio, who dodges it, but didn't expect to be hit in the face directly by Genkei. However, now, Genkei doesn't infuse his punches with wind magic; Akio must rely on the magic already flowing inside Genkei's body to sense him.

Akio regains himself, as he was able to partially distinguish Genkei's location, throwing a fireball at where his cousin once was. Genkei is naturally able to dodge it, hitting Akio in the back. Now, Akio is able to sense him, but even less so than when he used his wind magic with his punches.

Now, Akio tries to expand his sensory domain but fails. He can't keep it up. Instead, it starts becoming smaller. Genkei notices this and decides to be even more harsh on Akio, who is able to sense him less and less.

In his desparation, Akio creates fireballs all around them, releasing said fireballs omnidirectionally. Genkei tries to dodge but fails, though he doesn't consider that a problem. After all, Akio wouldn't be able to sense his energy like that...

As soon as one of Akio's fireballs hit Genkei, Akio appears behind him, striking him in the back with an open palm. Genkei's eyes widen.

"You smart bastard..."

Akio starts outputting magic through his palm, allowing it to make contact with Genkei's body. This way, he can get a better sense of his magic energy, but Genkei punches him away.

"That was good, but just getting a feel for my energy won't be enough."

Genkei walks towards Akio, who's quick to recover and lunge at him. Genkei questions this move, as he dodges, attempting to hit him in the back with his elbow...

...but Akio dodged. Instead, Akio threw another attack at Genkei point-blank. This did knock him back significantly, causing Genkei to laugh.

"So he knows now. He can feel all energy and distinguish mine."

Before Genkei can do anything else, though, Akio throws a barrage of fireballs at him again, this time aiming to injure him. Genkei blocks against them, but notes that they're extremely powerful, even for a sparring match.

While he was busy with the fireballs, Genkei was unable to see that Akio came just behind them, punching him in the face and throwing him onto the ground. The power, though...

Genkei jumps up into the air, appearing behind Akio, as he removes his earplugs and throws him into the wall.

"You did well, Akio! We're done."

However, as the blindfold unwinds itself and falls, Genkei sees that Akio's sclerae are orange and his pupils are white.. as they disappear.
