Chapter 12: The Batman
A Few Weeks After the Attempted Arkham Breakout
The situation at Arkham could have been handled better. There were many things I could have done differently. These thoughts weighed on my mind as I reviewed the footage of Gotham's newest vigilante: the so-called "Iron Spider." His real identity remains unknown, but he's quickly become a force to be reckoned with.
His first appearance during the Arkham breakout caught everyone's attention. Since then, he's been spotted with increasing frequency—day or night, he's active. He doesn't just take on small-time or mid-tier criminals; he's even prevented a dam from collapsing.
However, I still don't have enough information on him to devise a contingency plan in case he ever goes rogue. Based on the most recent footage, I've started piecing together the basics of his capabilities and intelligence.
I paused the video on the Batcomputer, focusing on a clip from the Darksite, where Iron Spider faced off against Bane. He struggled initially but managed to defeat him—a feat that few can claim. From this, I noted two key observations:
Super Durability: His suit or body appears to absorb significant damage. Combat Mastery and Enhanced Senses: He has remarkable combat skills and something akin to a sixth sense, dodging attacks without looking. Whether this is innate or suit-assisted is still unclear.
The bigger mystery is the suit itself. Who created it? Where did he acquire the materials or the expertise to build something so advanced?.
These questions remain unanswered, and until I know more, I can't rule out the possibility of him being a future threat.
Lucius Fox said that the energy required to power Iron Spider's suit could sustain a city for months perhaps even years. If the suit was manufactured here, there should be a paper trail, some traceable evidence. The alternative is that it's of alien origin, though the likelihood of that remains slim. Regardless, I'll need more observation before drafting any contingency plans.
The soft hum of wheelchair wheels approached from behind, pulling me from my thoughts. Quickly, I switched the files on the Batcomputer before Barbara could see what I was working on.
"I've told you countless times, Bruce you need to rest," Barbara said, her voice filled with both concern and insistence.
"I can't," I replied firmly. "If I rest, who knows what crimes could take place in Gotham?"
Barbara rolled closer and glanced at the monitor, catching a glimpse of one of the images I hadn't fully hidden. It was a freeze-frame of Iron Spider in action.
"That's the new hero, Iron Spider, isn't it? What are you doing with his pictures?" she asked, her tone tinged with curiosity.
"I'm trying to uncover his identity and locate where he operates from," I explained, pointing to a map on the screen. "I've been analyzing his flight patterns, but there's no progress yet. He's consistently active, except for short gaps where he vanishes. There has to be a reason for those disappearances, but I haven't figured it out yet."
Barbara tilted her head, giving me a knowing look. "That's such a you thing to do, Bruce. And isn't that an invasion of his privacy?"
"He might be a potential threat," I said, my voice firm.
Her expression softened slightly, but her words carried as note of caution. "Maybe. Or maybe he's just someone trying to help, like the rest of us."
"I still want to know what he is," I said, leaning forward, my eyes fixed on the monitor. "Is he a human with a suit or some sort of machine?"
"We can rule out the machine part of that equation," Barbara said, crossing her arms.
"Why?" I asked, my tone laced with skepticism.
Barbara pulled out her phone, scrolling through it. "There's a video from one of those dark corners of the internet. It shows Iron Spider fighting Killer Shark. It's pretty revealing."
She handed me the phone, and I watched the footage. The video showed Killer Shark dominating the fight. Iron Spider's repulsors were ineffective as his body was more durable then clayface and bane, and he couldn't safely use the electrical capabilities of his suit without risking harm to nearby civilians. The fight turned into a brutal hand-to-hand brawl.
Killer Shark snarled, lunging at Iron Spider. His massive jaws clamped down on the hero's arm.
"Ah! I'll make sushi out of you, you damn shark!" Iron Spider shouted, his voice strained but determined. Then, with a sudden surge of power, he channeled electricity directly into Killer Shark's mouth, shocking him from the inside.
Barbara tapped the screen. "See that? He felt the bite—he's not a machine. You can tell from his reactions, his pain, and his reflexes."
I nodded thoughtfully, replaying the video in my head. "Fine. That leaves us with the human angle. But his suit... it's not ordinary. Who designed it? Where did he get the materials? The energy it uses must be off the charts."
Barbara shrugged. "All valid questions. But Bruce, don't let your obsession run wild. If he's human, there's probably a reason he's doing what he's doing. Maybe even something we'd understand."
I just nodded, giving the appearance of agreement, but deep down, it wouldn't stop me. It couldn't. I had to find out everything about him—who he was, where he came from, and what his intentions were.
Barbara's words lingered in the air, but I pushed them aside. The Iron Spider might seem like an ally now, but I couldn't afford to take chances.
"Fine," I said, keeping my tone neutral. But in my mind, the decision was already made. I would uncover the truth about him, no matter what it took.
I didn't respond. My gaze drifted back to the screen, to the endless files and surveillance feeds I'd compiled. He might have stayed hidden from the world, but no one stayed hidden from me for long.
"Let's see who you really are, Iron Spider," I murmured to myself, my fingers resuming their work on the keyboard.
