Chapter 6 - New Haven II
Perseus soared above the crumbling remains of New Haven, the city engulfed in chaos beneath him. His heart raced as he scanned the streets, looking for any sign of civilians in danger. Fires raged in the distance, casting an orange glow across the darkened skyline, and the sounds of gunfire and breaking glass echoed through the streets below.
Then, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted something.
Down an alley, three armed men were closing in on a woman and her young son. The boy couldn't have been older than seven, his wide eyes filled with terror as he clung to his mother. She stood between him and the criminals, trying to shield him with her body, her voice trembling as she begged them to leave them alone.
Perseus' fists clenched, his cosmic energy pulsing faintly around him as he swooped down toward the alley. He landed with a heavy thud, the ground cracking beneath him as his feet touched down, and he stood tall, his imposing figure looming over the men.
"Hey!" Perseus' voice boomed, startling the criminals for a moment. "Back off. I won't ask again. Surrender, now!"
The men turned toward him, their eyes widening in surprise. But instead of fear, they erupted into laughter.
"Look at this guy! He thinks he's some kinda hero!" one of them sneered, raising his gun. The others joined in, their laughter cruel and mocking.
"Boy, you're in the wrong place at the wrong time," another man added, pulling a knife from his belt, its blade gleaming in the dim light.
Perseus took a step forward, his chest tightening as the situation became clearer. He wasn't used to this—the way the criminals weren't fazed by his presence, the way they casually mocked him even though they were clearly outmatched. He was still new to all of this, and part of him had believed that just showing up would be enough to stop them.
"I don't want to hurt you," Perseus said, his voice firm but with an edge of uncertainty. "But you're not going to touch them. This is your last chance."
The criminals exchanged glances before one of them barked out a command. "Kill him!"
Before Perseus could react, the men rushed at him. The first one, wielding a knife, lunged forward, aiming for his chest. Instinctively, Perseus raised his arm, and the knife clanged off his skin, the blade snapping in half like it had hit solid steel. The criminal stumbled back, his face twisted in shock, but the others kept coming.
A second man fired his gun, the bullets ricocheting off Perseus' chest with a series of metallic pings. Perseus barely flinched, his cosmic durability keeping him safe, but the barrage of gunfire made his heart pound. This wasn't like the simulations, and the chaos of the situation made it hard to think clearly.
The third criminal, seeing that his bullets were useless, grabbed a nearby metal pipe and swung it at Perseus' head. The blow connected with a dull thud, but the pipe bent around Perseus' skull like it was made of plastic. The man froze, staring in disbelief at the mangled weapon.
Perseus growled, his patience wearing thin. "Enough!"
With a burst of strength, he swung his arm, sending the third man flying across the alley, crashing into a dumpster with a loud bang. The man groaned in pain, slumping to the ground unconscious.
The remaining two criminals hesitated, their confidence shaken as they stared at the wreckage of their friend. But they weren't ready to give up yet. One of them raised his gun again, aiming for the woman and her son.
Perseus' eyes widened in horror. "No!"
In a flash, he was in front of them, shielding them with his body just as the criminal pulled the trigger. The bullets bounced harmlessly off his back, but the fury in Perseus' chest ignited. He grabbed the man by the collar and hoisted him into the air, his grip tightening as the criminal struggled.
"You think this is a joke?" Perseus growled, his voice low and dangerous. "These people are scared. They're innocent. And you're treating this like a game."
The criminal's eyes widened in fear for the first time, his laughter replaced by gasps for air as Perseus held him effortlessly above the ground.
"P-Please," the man stammered. "Don't—"
Perseus tossed him aside, sending him skidding across the pavement. The other man dropped his gun and backed away, his hands raised in surrender.
"Fine! We're done! Just let us go!" he pleaded, terror etched across his face.
Perseus took a deep breath, his fists still clenched, but he forced himself to calm down. He couldn't lose control, not here, not like this. His chest still heaved with anger, but the danger had passed.
"Get out of here," he growled, his eyes narrowing as he watched the criminals scramble to their feet and run.
Once they were gone, Perseus turned to the woman and her son. The boy clung to his mother, still shaking with fear, but his eyes were locked on Perseus, wide with awe.
"Are you okay?" Perseus asked gently, kneeling down to their level.
The woman nodded, her voice trembling. "Th-Thank you. I don't know what would've happened if you hadn't shown up."
Perseus offered a small smile, though inside, he still felt the weight of his inexperience. "Just... stay safe. Find somewhere to hide until this is al-"
Before Perseus could finish his sentence, a sudden, crushing impact struck him from behind. His vision went white with the force of it, and his body was hurled across the alley like a ragdoll. He smashed into the brick wall of a nearby building, crumbling part of it with the sheer force of his impact. Pain exploded through his body, and for the first time, he felt the sting of something far more serious than just a bruise. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth as he groaned, trying to push himself off the rubble.
His ears rang, and his vision blurred for a moment. He could hear the woman screaming in terror, the boy crying, but everything was muffled as he struggled to get his bearings. Through the haze of pain, Perseus blinked and focused on the figure standing over him—a massive man, his silhouette barely visible against the fires that raged around them.
As Perseus staggered to his feet, wiping the blood from his mouth, he finally saw the attacker clearly.
It was Balor.
The towering figure stood with his arms crossed, a look of grim apology on his face. Balor was massive, built like a walking fortress, his muscles rippling beneath his combat gear. His eyes, usually gleaming with a cocky arrogance, were cold and focused, a predator assessing its prey.
Perseus' heart sank as Balor gave him a casual nod. "My bad, kid," Balor rumbled, his voice deep and menacing. "Didn't mean to hit you that hard, but... you weren't exactly paying attention."
Perseus, still disoriented, backed up slowly, pressing his hands against the broken wall for support. His mind raced. Why was Balor here? Wasn't he part of the Syndicate?
"Y-You're Balor... What the hell are you doing?" Perseus spat, his voice hoarse as he wiped more blood from his lips. His cosmic energy flickered faintly around him, but he was clearly shaken.
Balor sighed, shaking his head. "I'm sorry about the punch, really. But things have changed, and I've got orders. I need you to come with me, Perseus."
Perseus glared at him, the pain in his body mixing with a surge of anger. "Orders? From who? Don't you guys call yourselves the real good guys?! "
Balor raised a brow and gave a half-smile, though there was no warmth behind it. "Not everything's as simple as you think, kid. This world's bigger than you realize, and right now, there are people who want what you've got. And you know what? It's best if you don't ask too many questions." He took a step forward, his massive frame towering over Perseus, who instinctively took a step back.
"You're coming with me. Peacefully if you want... but if you resist, well..." Balor flexed his massive fists, the air around him crackling with tension. "I'll have to take you the hard way."
Perseus' head pounded with confusion, but one thing was clear: Balor wasn't playing around. He was serious. For a moment, doubt crept into Perseus' mind. He was still inexperienced, unsure of his own powers, and Balor was no joke. The man had superhuman strength, speed, durability—and god knows what else, he could easily overwhelm him if things got out of control.
But then, Perseus thought about the mission, about the innocent people still trapped in the city, and the chaos left in the wake of the Architect's attack. He couldn't afford to back down now.
"I'm not going anywhere with you," Perseus growled, his fists clenching as his cosmic energy began to surge again, brighter this time, glowing faintly around his body. "I don't know what game you're playing, but I'm not about to let you drag me off. I've got a job to do."
Balor shrugged, rolling his shoulders. "Figured you'd say that." He cracked his knuckles, his expression hardening. "Alright then. Guess we're doing this the hard way."
Before Perseus could react, Balor was on him again, moving faster than someone of his size had any right to. His fist collided with Perseus' chest, sending him flying backward once more, crashing through the remains of the wall and into the alleyway beyond. The ground shook as Perseus landed hard, his body skidding across the pavement.
Gasping for air, Perseus staggered to his feet, clutching his side where Balor had hit him. The impact had left him bruised, and he could feel the dull ache of his ribs. This is bad... he thought, his mind racing. Balor wasn't holding back, and if this kept up, he wasn't sure how long he could hold his own.
Balor advanced slowly, his eyes locked on Perseus. "You should've come quietly, kid. I didn't want to rough you up, but you've left me no choice."
Perseus narrowed his eyes, the cosmic energy surging inside him again, crackling at his fingertips. He could feel it building, the power that had been growing since he first discovered it. He didn't fully understand it yet, but he had to use everything he had if he was going to stand a chance against Balor.
With a roar, Perseus launched himself at Balor, swinging his fist with all the strength he could muster. Balor blocked it with ease, catching Perseus' fist in his massive hand. The force of the blow sent shockwaves through the alley, but Balor didn't flinch.
"Not bad," Balor grunted, twisting Perseus' arm with a bone-crunching grip. "But you're still a long way from being a real threat."
Perseus gritted his teeth, pain shooting up his arm, but he wasn't giving up. With a burst of energy, he pulled back and kicked Balor in the chest, sending him stumbling backward. It wasn't much, but it was enough to give Perseus some breathing room.
"Oh? You're stronger than I thought," Balor admitted, rubbing his chest where Perseus had kicked him. "But that's not going to save you."
Just as Balor readied himself to charge at Perseus again, a sudden, deafening clang echoed through the alley. In a blur of motion, Aegis appeared, slamming his shield into Balor with the force of a battering ram. Sparks of electricity crackled from the shield's edge, sending a powerful current through Balor's massive frame, stunning him momentarily.
Balor stumbled backward, his body shaking as the shock rippled through him. He gritted his teeth, growling as he steadied himself, his eyes locking onto Aegis with a mix of frustration and recognition.
"Aegis," Balor snarled, rubbing his chest where the shield had struck him. "You just can't stay out of my way, can you?"
Aegis, his towering form clad in his battle-worn armor, stood firm between Perseus and Balor. His shield, large and indestructible, hummed with a faint glow of residual electricity. He raised it slightly, preparing for another attack, his eyes locked on Balor with cold intensity.
"We've been down this road before, Balor," Aegis said, his voice low and unyielding. "You don't want to do this."
Balor cracked his neck, a smug grin spreading across his face as he straightened up. "You're right. We have clashed before. And you know what? I'm getting tired of the same fucking outcome. This time, I'm bringing you down."
Perseus, still catching his breath, stared at Aegis in disbelief. He hadn't expected backup to arrive, let alone someone as formidable as Aegis. But the tension in the air between Aegis and Balor was thick, as if this wasn't just another fight—it was personal.
The two stood opposite each other, like titans preparing for a brutal clash.
Balor took a step forward, his muscles bulging as his body seemed to pulse with raw power. "Let's finish this."
Aegis didn't flinch. His grip tightened around the hilt of his shield, and in a heartbeat, the fight began.
Balor charged with a roar, his fist swinging with terrifying speed and strength, aiming directly for Aegis' chest. But Aegis was ready—he met the blow head-on with his shield, the impact sending shockwaves through the alley. The ground beneath them cracked from the sheer force, and dust and debris flew into the air.
The two behemoths clashed relentlessly, each blow shaking the surrounding buildings. Balor's strikes were brutal, his fists heavy with the power of a wrecking ball, but Aegis was a master of defense, using his shield to absorb the attacks with precision. His movements were fluid, every step calculated to counter Balor's sheer strength.
But Aegis didn't stay on the defensive for long.
With a quick pivot, Aegis swung his shield into Balor's side, sending another pulse of electricity through him. Balor roared in pain, but it only fueled his rage. He lashed out with a savage backhand, catching Aegis off guard and knocking him back several feet. Aegis crashed into a nearby car, denting it with the force of his body.
Aegis grunted as he pushed himself up, his body aching from the impact, but his eyes never left Balor. "Is that all you've got?" he growled, wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth.
Balor laughed, the sound deep and menacing. "You're still standing, aren't you?"
With a snarl, Balor leaped at Aegis again, this time moving even faster. He swung a fist aimed straight for Aegis' head, but Aegis ducked, sidestepping and slamming his shield into Balor's knee, forcing him to stagger. Balor let out a howl of pain, but before he could recover, Aegis brought his shield up and bashed Balor across the face, the force of the blow sending him crashing through the remains of the alley wall.
The battle was intense, it was clear that this wasn't the first time the two had fought—there was an understanding between them, a familiarity with each other's tactics. And while Perseus watched in awe, he realized something: Aegis and Balor weren't just opponents. They were rivals. And they both knew what the other was capable of.
Perseus, still reeling from his own battle with Balor, stood back, watching the scene unfold with wide eyes. He had never seen anything like this. The sheer power these two men wielded was beyond anything he'd ever imagined. He had always known Aegis was powerful, but seeing him go toe-to-toe with someone as monstrous as Balor put everything into perspective.
This was a war between giants.
Suddenly, Aegis' voice cut through the chaos, his command sharp and urgent. "Perseus! Get out of here! Find Gumdrop and regroup with the others!"
Perseus hesitated, his fists still glowing faintly with cosmic energy. He didn't want to leave Aegis alone, but the tone in Aegis' voice told him this battle wasn't something he could help with. Aegis was buying him time.
With a reluctant nod, Perseus took to the sky, his body still aching but his resolve strong. He glanced back one last time at Aegis and Balor, their figures clashing like gods in the alley below, before he soared higher, disappearing into the darkened skies over New Haven.
Aegis looked at Balor, both of them breathing heavily, their powerful blows having taken a toll. Balor cracked his neck and grinned, his bruised face showing nothing but arrogance and pleasure in the fight.
Aegis, his shield still pulsing with faint electrical energy, lowered it slightly. His eyes narrowed, trying to get a read on Balor's true intentions.
"What the hell do you want with the boy?" Aegis growled, his voice thick with suspicion and frustration. " Just a kid, Balor. He's not part of your game."
Balor wiped blood from the corner of his mouth, his grin widening as if Aegis had asked a question he was just waiting to answer. He stepped forward slowly, his massive form casting a long shadow in the alley.
"You really think he's 'just a kid,' Aegis?" Balor chuckled, shaking his head. "You don't know what you're dealing with. That boy is more valuable than you can imagine."
Aegis' jaw tightened, his grip on his shield firm as he glared at Balor. "Valuable? You're talking about him like he's a weapon, not a person."
Balor's eyes gleamed with something dark, a spark of amusement mixed with cold calculation. "He's both," he replied, shrugging his massive shoulders. "The kid has no idea what he really is—what he's capable of—hell, it seems like not even you know about it.. "
Aegis' eyes narrowed at Balor's cryptic words, his mind racing as he tried to piece together what Balor was hinting at. Something about Perseus was more important than he realized—something bigger than just raw power. But Balor wasn't giving away details easily.
"Don't play games with me, Balor," Aegis growled, his voice low and dangerous. "What do you know about him? Tell me, now."
Balor wiped the blood from his lip with a slow, deliberate motion, his grin never faltering. He took a step forward, his massive form towering over the alley as he loomed closer to Aegis. "Oh, I'd love to tell you, Aegis. Really, I would. But the truth? It's not for me to share."
Aegis' grip on his shield tightened, the electrical energy crackling at the edges. He could feel the weight of the situation pressing down on him. Perseus was in more danger than he had realized, and this was no longer just about stopping Balor—it was about keeping Perseus safe from something much bigger.
"You're not taking him," Aegis said firmly, his voice cold and unwavering. "I don't care what you or the Syndicate have planned for him. He's staying with H.O.P.E."
Balor's grin widened into something more sinister. "Oh, man, you've got it all wrong. We don't need you to let us take him."
Aegis' heart raced as the truth dawned on him. Balor wasn't here to capture Perseus. He was a distraction—a decoy. While they fought, the rest of the Syndicate was moving in on Perseus. This entire fight had been nothing more than a stalling tactic, keeping Aegis occupied while the real danger closed in on the boy.
Balor saw the realization hit Aegis and laughed, his voice deep and rumbling. "Took you long enough to figure it out."
Aegis felt his stomach drop. He had been played. His instinct was to charge after Perseus, to protect him from whatever the Syndicate had planned, but Balor was blocking his path, his towering form standing like a wall of muscle and power.
"You're not going anywhere," Balor said, stepping forward with a menacing glint in his eyes. "You're stuck with me, Aegis. And trust me, by the time this is over, we'll have the boy."
Aegis knew he couldn't afford to let Balor delay him any longer, but there was no easy way out this one.
