Chapter 81: The Island II

The boy scrambled back, his small frame trembling as he stammered, "P-please don't hurt me! I-I was just trying to protect the island!"

Rayleigh and the others approached, curious about the encounter. Shakky's sharp gaze softened slightly as she observed the boy. He looked no older than ten, his clothes tattered and his face smeared with dirt. Despite his fear, there was a defiant glint in his eyes.

"Protect the island?" Rayleigh echoed, his tone even. "You're the one behind the illusion?"

The boy nodded hesitantly. "Y-yes. I used my Devil Fruit power… but I only wanted to keep people away. I didn't mean any harm."

"What kind of Devil Fruit?" Tony asked, scanning the boy with his gauntlet.

The boy hesitated before answering. "It's called the Illusion Illusion Fruit. I can create visions, make people see things that aren't real. But it's not strong enough to fight someone like you…" His voice trailed off as he looked at Dave, awe and fear warring in his expression.

Dave knelt down, his gaze steady but not unkind. "And why would a kid like you need to protect this place? Who are you protecting it from?"

The boy swallowed hard, glancing nervously at the group before replying. "The island… it's all we have left. My family, my friends—they're gone now. Pirates came a few years ago and destroyed everything. I'm the only one left. If I can scare people away, maybe… maybe they'll leave the island alone."

A heavy silence fell over the crew. Shakky sighed, her expression softening. "You've been here all alone? No one to help you?"

The boy nodded, his eyes welling up with tears he stubbornly refused to shed. "This island used to be beautiful… now it's just broken."

Dave stood, his jaw tightening as he looked around the cavern. The molten patches, the cracked terrain, the eerie hum—it all made sense now. This wasn't just a dangerous island. It was the aftermath of destruction, left to fester and decay.

"Kid," Dave said, his voice firm but not harsh. "You're strong for surviving here on your own. But illusions aren't going to protect this place forever. You need more than that."

The boy blinked, unsure of what to say. "But… what else can I do?"

Dave smirked, his confidence infectious. "Stick with us. You've got guts, and you've got potential. I'll make sure you learn how to use that Devil Fruit of yours for more than just scaring people. You want to protect this island? Then you'll need to be strong enough to face whatever comes your way."

The boy hesitated, his wide eyes searching Dave's face. Finally, he nodded. "O-okay. My name's Kaito."

"Kaito, huh?" Dave said, ruffling the boy's messy hair. "Welcome aboard. But first, let's clean this place up. If it's worth protecting, it's worth fixing."

Rayleigh chuckled softly, his expression approving. "Looks like we've picked up another stray."

"Let's just hope he doesn't cause as much trouble as the rest of you," Shakky quipped with a smirk.

Enel shrugged, leaning casually against his staff. "The kid's illusions could be useful. If nothing else, he's got guts."

Tony grinned, tapping his gauntlet. "I can rig up something to stabilize this island's structure. It'll buy it some time, at least."

As the crew got to work, Kaito watched them, a mixture of gratitude and awe lighting up his face. For the first time in years, he felt a flicker of hope. And though he didn't fully understand who Dave and his crew were, he knew one thing for sure—they were unlike anyone he'd ever met.

And thus the first Island they got was an mixture of bravery and sad story of a kid, who just wants to protect what remains of his life with his family, though Dave now has invited him to join his crew as they all begin to work together to patch up the Island to make sure new life blooms here.

The island stood as a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of the world. Amid its shattered remains and the echoes of loss, a new chapter was beginning—one born from resilience and the determination to carve out hope where despair had once reigned.

Dave and his crew worked tirelessly alongside Kaito. Rayleigh took charge of surveying the terrain, his seasoned eye identifying areas of structural instability that needed immediate attention. Tony's technological expertise proved invaluable; he constructed makeshift supports using salvaged materials, ensuring that the weakened land wouldn't collapse further. Enel, ever the reluctant helper, used his lightning to weld broken structures together with precision, grumbling under his breath but doing his part nonetheless.

Shakky, meanwhile, led Kaito through the process of rebuilding, her calm demeanor helping to guide the boy's efforts. She showed him how to use his Illusion Illusion Fruit more effectively—not to deceive, but to inspire. Together, they created a vision of what the island could become: a vibrant haven, alive with new growth and possibilities.

For Dave, this wasn't just about fixing an island—it was about setting an example. He knew that if Kaito was going to join his crew, the boy needed to understand what it truly meant to protect something. It wasn't about illusions or tricks; it was about action, conviction, and the willingness to fight for what mattered.

"You've got a lot to learn, kid," Dave said one evening as they took a break by the island's shore. The sun was setting, casting the sea in hues of orange and gold. "But you've got the heart for it. That's more than most can say."

Kaito nodded, his eyes shining with determination. "I won't let you down, Captain."

Dave nodded in return, though inwardly, anger simmered beneath his composed exterior. He wasn't going to place all the blame solely on pirates. The world was rife with corruption and cruelty, filled with both bad and worse people, and that wasn't going to change easily. Yet, the one thing that kept the world from completely descending into chaos was the existence of good people—those who stood as beacons of hope in the darkness.
