Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord

Chapter 234: Chapter 231

"All of them should die…"

Just as Freya was about to draw her sword and rush out to take down those people, she suddenly stopped, her eyes wide in disbelief at the strange turn of events unfolding before her.

"Hey! What are you doing? I'm one of your buyers!"

"Damn it, let us go! Despicable beastkins, what do you want?"

"How dare you! My father is Count George! You actually dare to kidnap me?"

"…"

After the nobles had killed dozens of slaves and were in the midst of pursuing others, a group of armored beastkin knights suddenly surged from the surrounding area, violently capturing several of the nobles and confiscating their weapons and armor.

"Send these things back to their families. Each person will require a ransom of fifty gold coins to be redeemed."

The leader, a dogman beastkin, pointed at the bloodstained sword and said softly, "Remember to tell their fathers that if the ransom is not paid, their heads will be delivered to them."

"Yes!"

Immediately, the beastkins began packing the longswords into a box, riding off on horseback. This would serve as the nobles' identification.

"Who are you? I want to see the Lord of Blade City! My father is Count George!" Shouted an eighteen-year-old nobleman loudly.

"Slap!"

A dogman beastkin slapped him across the face, coldly stating, "Do you know? Among these people, you are the least valuable. How many sons does Count George have? You should know that you are just an unloved discarded child. I hope Count George will pay the fifty gold coins for your pitiful ransom!"

"What do you mean? After the ransom is paid, you still don't intend to let us go?" A noble shouted in terror.

"Of course not! You just happened to encounter bandits in the wild, and you were all captured by them. It has nothing to do with us in Blade City." The dogman beastkin laughed maniacally.

"No, you're untrustworthy! You're deceiving us!"

"You're the one deceiving us! Damn it, let me go... urgh!"

"Thud!"

The dogman beastkin stabbed his sword into the chest of the loud noble, pulling it out and flicking the blood off the blade with a cold smirk. "Talking about trust with you humans? How ridiculous."

If Freya didn't understand what was happening by now, she might as well go bang her head against a wall. This was clearly a black market operation—a planned kidnapping of nobles.

"Lock them all up in the dungeon," The dogman beastkin waved his hand.

"Yes, sir!"

The nobles were taken away, their fates already sealed. Whether or not a ransom was paid, they would never have the chance to see the light of day again.

"And as for them?" The dogman beastkin glanced at the trembling slaves, unable to hide his disdain. "Send them to the workshop and make sure they're fed. Otherwise, they won't have the strength to work."

"Yes, sir!" Replied the clerk respectfully.

The dogman beastkin left, accompanied by the beastkin knights escorting the nobles. Freya quickly maneuvered to follow them. She had decided to investigate Blade City; there was too much strangeness about this place.

The presence of beastkin knights was unexpected. While to her they seemed like ordinary knights, it still surprised Freya. More importantly, a dogman beastkin was in charge, which indicated a high status.

Freya kept her distance, not daring to get too close; the dogman beastkin's ears were just as good as hers.

Following behind the dogman beastkin, Freya entered Blade City. As she walked through the secluded alleys, her brows furrowed, and her wolf ears twitched slightly.

"Clang, clang, clang!!"

She could hear the distinct sounds of metal being hammered. Curiously, Freya crept toward the noise, peering through a narrow gap in the wall to see many people forging armor.

Suddenly, everything clicked in Freya's mind. The slaves called to dig the moat must have been brought here to work on the armor.

The unease within her grew; Blade City felt increasingly strange, as if invisible hands were orchestrating something sinister.

"Why are they secretly crafting so much armor? Is the lord of Blade City planning a rebellion?" Freya's eyes brightened; she felt like she had uncovered a shocking secret.

After a moment of contemplation, Freya quietly slipped away and caught up with the dogman beastkin, then stealthily infiltrated the lord's manor. She needed to investigate further, especially since the beastkin resembling the princess was supposedly held there.

Landing silently, Freya scanned her surroundings, choosing a direction to sneak through. As she navigated past the guards in the lord's manor, she was astonished to discover that all the guards were beastkins.

"This is impossible! Is the lord of Blade City a noble who is close to beastkins?"

Freya immediately dismissed that thought. The beastkins outside, shivering from the cold, showed no signs of goodwill.

With these doubts lingering in her mind, Freya continued her advance, carefully observing the rooms in the lord's manor, but she still hadn't found anyone.

"Damn beastkins! Where is the artifact I asked for? Hurry up and bring it to me!"

Suddenly, a room erupted with a hysterical roar, drawing Freya's attention. She cautiously approached the door and peeked through a narrow crack in the wooden wall.

Inside, there were three people: two had their backs to Freya, while one was facing her and was clearly human.

"Lord of Blade City, you know that artifacts are extremely rare. You've absorbed too much lately," One of the two with their backs turned said. "Several overseers in the city have been asking to see you. Are you planning to meet them?"

Freya furrowed her brow. The lord of Blade City had a volatile temper, and his deep-set eyes and sunken cheeks made him look as though he were suffering from a serious illness.

Moreover, the voice of the person with his back to her sounded somewhat familiar, as if she had heard it somewhere before.

"Get lost! Just let them go!" The lord of Blade City roared in frustration. "Isn't everything in Blade City your responsibility? You can go and meet them yourself."

"Understood. Since you think so highly of me, I will take care of it." The man replied.

He pulled out a dried-up fruit from his pocket and said softly, "As for the artifact, I still have a little here. I will offer it to you, my lord."

"What is that??" Freya immediately covered her mouth, her eyes narrowing.

The object in the man's hand was unmistakably a forbidden item known as the 'Moon Fruit'!
