Sharingan Evolution: Proficiency's Path

Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Imaginary Enemy

"Second match, Uchiha Aomei wins!"

Hearing the examiner's words, Aomei lowered the kunai in his hand, took two steps back to create a little distance, and then turned to walk toward the stairs. During this time, he didn't say a word, projecting a demeanor of aloofness.

It wasn't that Aomei was deliberately trying to appear cold, but this attitude helped to keep people who wanted to get close at a distance. This allowed him to focus on his own affairs in peace.

As Aomei stepped into the stairwell, the crowd seemed to come back to their senses, whispering amongst themselves. Even without paying close attention, Aomei could hear fragments of comments like, "How is he so strong?" and "That was way too fast."

Indeed, the fight had ended very quickly. From the moment they squared off to the moment Takakura Shota surrendered, less than two minutes had passed. The actual fighting time was even shorter—only about ten seconds.

For these examinees, who were still between the ranks of Genin and Chunin, this was something beyond their comprehension.

However, the Jonin watching the match had a clearer picture. Although the fight had been brief and Aomei's victory seemed effortless, what he had displayed was an overwhelming advantage in terms of combat experience and technique.

When combined with his adept use of the Sharingan, finishing the battle in the blink of an eye wasn't surprising.

Even so, some of the Jonin were still taken aback by Aomei's strength, including Uchiha Chirito.

At this moment, Chirito realized that he and the other Uchiha clan elders had focused too much on Shisui Uchiha in recent times, neglecting the talents of Aomei Uchiha.

Certainly, Aomei's potential might not match Shisui's, but it undoubtedly surpassed the majority of Uchiha clan members.

'Looks like I'll need to inform the Great Elder to pay more attention to Aomei after this,' Chirito thought to himself.

Meanwhile, the third match had already begun.

This time, two female examinees stepped onto the field. Aomei recognized one of them—Aoki Koji, the girl he had kicked away during the second exam from Nara Seihei's squad.

Though her strength was nothing noteworthy compared to his, it was clear that she had some advantages over her opponent, especially in taijutsu.

In the end, she narrowly won the fight.

"Third match, Aoki Koji wins!" the examiner announced.

"Nice job, Koji!" shouted Satou Katsu from the second-floor balcony.

After they left the field, the examiner swiftly drew the names for the fourth match.

Thus, the matches continued one after another, time slipping by. It wasn't until the second-to-last match that Shisui Uchiha's name was called.

And his opponent was none other than Nara Seihei, who had previously crossed paths with Aomei.

As Seihei stood in the arena, looking at the Uchiha prodigy with his dual-tomoe Sharingan, he couldn't help but feel a sense of resignation.

What had he done to deserve this? First, he had to face Aomei in the second exam, and now in the very first round of this stage, he had to face Shisui Uchiha.

Sure, if he wanted to place highly, he would inevitably have to fight one of the two Uchiha sooner or later, but...

'Why the first round though?'

He hadn't even had time to prepare. The genius strategies of the Nara clan were only effective when supported by information. Without that, even the smartest mind was useless.

Now, facing Shisui Uchiha, he only knew two things: one, Shisui had the same Sharingan as Aomei; and two, he carried a sword, which probably meant he was skilled in kenjutsu.

But what good was knowing only this? He had no information on Shisui's combat experience, techniques, or habits.

'Oh well, I'll just have to take it one step at a time,' Seihei thought, a sense of helplessness washing over him as the battle began.

From the second-floor balcony, Aomei watched the match unfold, his eyes glinting thoughtfully.

Nara Seihei, as expected, fought entirely with his brain. Though he knew little about Shisui, his ability to adapt on the fly was impressive. Using his clan's signature Shadow Imitation Jutsu and his solid close-combat skills, he managed to hold his own for a while.

But that was it—just for a while.

Once Shisui got serious, Seihei wouldn't be able to hold out for long.

Indeed, Aomei could already tell that Shisui wasn't fighting at full strength. So far, he hadn't used any genjutsu or ninjutsu, and had relied solely on kenjutsu to fight.

It wasn't that Shisui was holding back intentionally, but rather that he was gauging Seihei's capabilities. Once he had determined the Nara's limits, he would end the match instantly—just like Aomei had done to Takakura Shota earlier.

The difference was that Seihei's abilities weren't immediately obvious and required some probing to reveal. Charging in recklessly might backfire, and Shisui was too cautious for that.

Aomei estimated that Shisui was about to launch his true attack soon. After all, Seihei's skills had been more or less assessed. Continuing to drag the fight out would be a waste of time and might even give Seihei the opportunity to turn things around. The Nara clan's intelligence was not to be underestimated.

As expected, just as Aomei predicted, it wasn't long before Shisui revealed his true strength. Using a combination of Sharingan genjutsu and ninjutsu, Shisui quickly pushed Seihei into a corner, finally holding a sword to his throat, forcing Seihei to surrender.

Seeing this, Aomei muttered to himself, "Uchiha-style kenjutsu, around level 3."

Yes, Shisui had been using the Uchiha clan's signature sword style—Uchiha-ryu Kenjutsu—and from what Aomei observed during the fight, he deduced that Shisui's skill level was roughly at the early stages of level 3, a full level below his own.

Moreover, Aomei had mastered a more advanced style, Konoha-ryu Kenjutsu. Combining the two, he was confident that he could surpass Shisui in close-quarters combat.

As for ranged combat, Aomei recalled the fire-style ninjutsu Shisui had used earlier. If that was the extent of his skill, there wouldn't be much of an issue there either.

The only real concern was Shisui's level of proficiency with genjutsu. After all, both of them shared dual-tomoe Sharingan, but who knew if there was a difference in their abilities?

It wasn't that Aomei saw Shisui as a direct enemy, but after observing this round of matches, he was certain that only the two of them would make it to the final round.

A showdown was inevitable.

As Aomei studied Shisui, the latter seemed to sense it and looked up toward him. Their eyes met for a moment, and Aomei could see the competitive spirit in Shisui's gaze.

Having spent the past eight or nine months training diligently since his arrival in this world, Aomei was finally about to face an opponent whose name had weight in his memories. A worthy battle was within reach.

Even Aomei couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement—after all, he wanted to prove that his hard work had not been in vain.
