Volume 2 Chapter 52
“Maids circulate these kinds of novels?”
“It’s common for maids to dream about transforming from a sparrow into a phoenix, right? But the maids around Miss Chris are all carefully selected good girls. However, harboring any further aspirations towards Miss Chris is forbidden.”
Nora is indeed strict.
“In that case, why not just make it a part of the maids’ code?”
“Because it effectively enhances the maids’ loyalty towards Miss Chris. Allowing them some relaxation occasionally is necessary.”
Nora continued her search, muttering about the probable existence of a sixth volume.
Unfortunately, even after searching the entire room, the sixth volume was nowhere to be found. Nora had to leave disappointedly, and I wondered if she might be interested in the content of those books.
By the time we searched the fifth room, I spotted a familiar figure on a chair in the corridor.
“Lifa?”
“Anna…”
Higdelytha stood up, rubbing her shoulders.
“Your first time as a maid must be tough. You’re allowed to rest for a while.”
Nora, as the head maid, authorized Higdelytha’s break. I could see that Higdelytha was struggling to adapt to the demanding work of a maid.
As Nora went to another maid’s room to continue her inspection, Higdelytha hurriedly approached me.
“The workload is so high! Is being a maid always this hard?”
“Yes, employers who can afford maids usually have substantial properties. They hire maids precisely because they can’t manage the cleaning themselves.”
“I’ve been working until now with no rest, and the other maids just keep working without stopping.”
Higdelytha flexed her sore wrists, acknowledging the hard work involved.
“I always thought it was easy since you do it alone… How do you manage?”
“With higher levels, there are skills that reduce fatigue and cleaning time, and increase efficiency. It’s manageable with diligent work.”
“It seems I underestimated the job…”
Higdelytha’s sense of defeat was palpable, but it was understandable.
I comforted her and shared the results of my negotiation with Chris.
“So, we can’t hide in… what was it… the Count’s convoy? His name is too long, I didn’t catch it.”
“Yes, and Duke Obi’s territory is on the border of the Kingdom of Mikael. The Carollingian Duke, responsible for escorting the third princess, must have already departed.”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
Higdelytha was puzzled, not very familiar with Mikael’s geography.
“Nobles in Borgias’ territory transport goods to the capital, Uriel. Using teleportation crystals is expensive, but since the Carollingian Duke is passing through the borders of Obi’s territory on his way out of Mikael, it’s more convenient to send the gifts then.”
Therefore, Count Montefeltro’s convoy had already departed, meaning the third princess’s escort was about to pass through Duke Obi’s territory. They would travel around the outskirts, not directly entering the barrier.
To smuggle out of Duke Obi’s territory, the third princess’s wedding was the best excuse.
The problem was missing the most likely ride with Count Montefeltro’s convoy. Where would we find another convoy we could blend into?
Without a breakthrough, we could only stay in Chris’s Ende Castle for now. However, the adventurer rumored to use “Astrology” was like a ticking time bomb. He could pinpoint our location at any time.
The only feasible option was to eliminate that player. But unless he committed a serious crime, he could revive in a day. If he sought protection from a group like the Black Hawk Mercenaries, assassination would become much harder. In the long run, assassination was not a good strategy.
Though temporarily safe, we were effectively in a stalemate.
“Don’t lose heart, Anna. Things will work out.”
Higdelytha tried to cheer me up, her smile forced.
I worried about involving Chris and her father in our troubles, something I definitely did not want to see.
“Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.”
Higdelytha had no better solution to break the deadlock. Perhaps not wanting to see me worried, she awkwardly changed the subject.
“By the way, Anna… have you… you know, started your period yet?”
“I haven’t… Why bring this up out of the blue?”
I still couldn’t respond calmly to the topic of menstruation, but Higdelytha winked at me.
“Isn’t this a good opportunity?”
“For what?”
“I heard adventurers brought a product that makes it easier for girls during that special time. It’s very popular and common in human kingdoms. It’s a bit pricey, but I’m sure a countess’s mansion would have it. Whether they’re willing to lend it to us is another story.”
“Are you talking about
… sanitary pads?”
“They’re not common among elves. I can’t remember clearly.”
Modern products, not restricted by the game, often became opportunities for adventurers. It seemed they had brought sanitary pads to Limoria.
Dealing with blood-stained underwear daily is indeed troublesome. If there’s a more convenient option, despite the embarrassment, it’s worth using.
I decided to ask Nora if we could borrow some from Ende Castle.
I parted with Higdelytha and found Nora in a maids’ rest room, searching for contraband.
“Nora—”
Just as I spoke, my balance shifted dramatically.
High heels are so hard to manage!
