Volume 2 Chapter 49
“That’s absurd, they just respawn after dying?”
“When Nora and I are bored, we’ve observed the bandit camp. After it’s wiped out, it doesn’t take long for a new group of bandits to travel great distances to settle there again. Sometimes fully-armed adventurer groups attack the camp, leaving it in ruins after their battles, and the bandits have to repair it themselves to survive.”
That sounds so tragic. It’s a strange kind of existence.
“The goal of the task I issue is just to eradicate the bandits, without specifying how. Some adventurers are particularly ruthless, poisoning the bandits’ food or putting laxatives in their cooking pots after clearing them out, then waiting for the respawned bandits to cook and eat, only to take them down again.”
“Uh, what’s the benefit?”
Killing bandits isn’t seen as an evil act. In fact, if travelers witness this, there’s a chance it can lead to an event where they praise the adventurers in taverns, increasing their reputation.
“They do have some equipment worth taking.”
The game is set in a medieval era, so getting well-armed is a challenge. Bandits might be outlaws, but they often have leaders wearing light armor, and there are even powerful bandits in the wild with equipment rivaling knights.
“After attacking the bandits, adventurers usually strip them of everything. Useful equipment is kept, and the rest is sold at tailor shops for a good amount of denarii.”
Not only killing but also looting? I feel like…
“It sounds like the adventurers are more like bandits?”
“Maybe. One adventurer told me, ‘An adventurer’s principle is to never leave empty-handed. They take everything they can.'”
So the reality is that innocent bandits are constantly persecuted by adventurers?
“But if they always respawn, doesn’t eradicating bandits seem pointless? And Lady Chris has to compensate them with denarii.”
“No worries, they’ll spend it on strengthening their equipment, trying their luck with loot boxes, and then return many times the denarii back to us.”
Wow, society truly is harsh.
“Are you interested in issuing tasks, Anna?”
“No… I can’t appear in front of adventurers right now. Every adventurer in the Kingdom of Mikael knows I’m protecting Lily.”
“Right, the crisis hasn’t been resolved.”
Chris understood my point and pondered with her chin in hand.
Hiding in the Barony of Ende was just a temporary measure. As long as Duke Borgias’s bounty was still active, the sword of Damocles hung over our heads.
I tentatively suggested a plan I’d thought of before.
“Lady Chris, I think I need to at least get Lily out of here.”
“Hmm, that child is indeed a target for many. Do you have a plan?”
“We’re planning to smuggle her out.”
“Smuggling… good idea, but there are only five entry and exit points now, all heavily guarded. Even as a countess’s daughter, I can’t leave freely.”
“You misunderstood, my idea is… about the third princess…”
I tentatively sought Chris’s opinion. While it was a viable method, the issue was that once exposed, it could implicate Chris’s father, Count Montefeltro. Chris had already taken great risks to protect us, and we would owe her a lot regardless of her decision.
“The third princess… ah! The dowry? That’s just been shipped out today. I can’t help with that.”
“No, it’s us who have troubled you, Lady Chris…”
The information we had wasn’t favorable. When we were in Baron Hearst’s domain a while ago, the tailor seemed to be on his way back, indicating the end of the competition. The tailor, favored by the count, could work quickly with his enhanced skill level.
We had missed the count’s dowry convoy.
“No problem, Anna. You can stay here until things calm down. No one dares to search Ende.”
Chris patted my shoulder with a smile, not even asking why I was protecting Lily.
She simply knew we were in danger and decided to help us.
“…How long are you going to stand there?”
Chris had just left when Nora’s cold voice came from behind.
“A task to clean Lady Chris’s room?”
“Follow me, and you’ll see.”
She still didn’t want to talk much with me. Was this arranged by Chris on purpose?
Nora turned, leaving me with her slender silhouette. I started to follow—
“Um…”
“Time is precious.”
“Sorry.”
“…You can’t walk in high heels?”
Nora glanced at me, immediately noticing why I was lagging. Of course, how could I have any experience in high heels?
Since I’ve accepted Chris’s kindness, I had to put up with the outfit, but I felt unsteady in several ways.
Nora snorted coldly: “How can you please the master if you can’t even walk in high heels? A maid
should know how to wear them.”
In my understanding, a master wouldn’t usually make such a request. Aren’t high heels optional for a maid?
But despite her mockery, Nora corrected her stance to demonstrate.
“Your steps are too large; take smaller, quicker steps.”
“Thank you for the advice.”
“…Follow me. I won’t wait for you for long.”
