Chapter 17 - The Imperial Concubine is having an affair with the Prime Minister
Unable to learn about Jiang Xin Ren’s recent health condition from others, Zhuang He Ming personally went to the Jian Jia Palace.
By the time he arrived, it was already late at night. The palace maids who opened the door for him were surprised, not expecting the master to come over in the middle of the night.
Didn’t he just return to the capital today? He was already eager to see Her Highness?
Zhuang He Ming was indifferent and went straight into the bedchamber.
Jiang Xin Ren was already asleep, her small face buried in the brocade quilt, sleeping comfortably.
He sat on the edge of the bed and gently pulled out her slender wrist to take her pulse.
Even though her complexion was rosy and her color was excellent, he didn’t dare to be careless. Only after personally taking her pulse did he feel at ease. He carefully tucked her in and silently gazed at her sleeping face.
Only at this moment did the joy of becoming a father gradually spread. He belatedly realized that after the passing of his parents, there was finally a child in this world who shared a blood tie with him.
His hand gently stroked the woman’s still-flat belly through the brocade quilt, as if comforting and urging, “Be good.”
He couldn’t stay long. After Jiang Xin Ren became pregnant, who knew how many pairs of eyes in the palace were watching the Jian Jia Palace? Although he had some skills, he couldn’t guarantee coming and going without a trace.
So, in the end, he caressed her little face again, took out an object from his bosom, placed it beside the pillow, got up, and left.
When Jiang Xin Ren woke up the next day, she turned her head and saw a stack of books beside the pillow. She understood.
Zhuang He Ming must have come last night and even brought her a gift from his inspection of Jiangnan.
She originally thought it would be Jiangnan pastries or exquisite jewelry, but unexpectedly, it was a stack of books. She didn’t know what they were.
She opened the book with the words “Jiangnan” written on the cover. On the first page, it read:
Upon arriving in Jiangnan by boat, I encountered a cat named Chi Yu. Its body was pure white with blue and yellow heterochromatic eyes. It was good at acting coquettish and being unreasonable.
Below was a lifelike painting of the cat drawn by Zhuang He Ming himself. It was depicted pouncing on a butterfly, its round and solid body looking quite adorable.
Jiang Xin Ren was immediately amused. Wasn’t this an ancient version of a social media post? Except the pictures were hand-drawn.
Zhuang He Ming had actually written and painted the interesting things he encountered in Jiangnan into a book and gifted it to her.
Looking through this book, it seemed she could imagine his state in Jiangnan.
As soon as he arrived in Jiangnan, he encountered a rascal cat that bumped into him. It clung to him, and he couldn’t argue with it, so he could only feed it some small fish to coax it away;
Jiangnan was misty with fine rain and beautiful scenery. He would also stop on a bridge to appreciate the beautiful view, while his colleagues beside him waited impatiently but didn’t dare to raise any objections;
And: Tonight, there was heavy rain. Suddenly, I met Your Highness in a dream. Upon waking, I drew a painting.
The painting depicted her appearance when she first met him.
Curved eyebrows like silkmoth antennas, a charming smile, and beautiful eyes glancing around.
This was how she looked in his eyes.
This book was really interestingly painted. Jiang Xin Ren was so engrossed in it that she failed to hear the eunuch’s announcement. When she raised her eyes, she saw that the Emperor had already entered the palace door.
If she hurriedly hid the book now, it would arouse the Emperor’s suspicion, seeming as if she had something to hide.
Jiang Xin Ren was very natural and placed the painting book aside. She got up to greet the Emperor.
“Greetings to Your Majesty.”
The Emperor waved his hand, “Beloved Consort, you may dispense with the formalities. I came today to check on the prince. Did the prince make a fuss today?”
Hearing these words, those who didn’t know would think her child had already been born. He kept saying “prince” and didn’t mention her at all.
This dog emperor, she cursed inwardly, but her face was full of smiles, “The child was very well-behaved today and didn’t make much of a fuss.”
The Emperor was relieved and turned to instruct her palace maids, “Your mistress is carrying the dragon’s heir. You must take good care of her. If anything happens to my prince, you will all be buried with him.”
She cursed him again, this dog emperor!
Seeing the palace maids kowtowing in fear, the Emperor finally let it go. He sat in the spot where Jiang Xin Ren had just been sitting and immediately noticed the painting book on the table.
“Where did this come from?”
Jiang Xin Ren remained calm and composed, “This concubine was bored in the palace, so I had the palace maids buy a travel book about Jiangnan to pass the time.”
The Emperor took a look and frowned, “This handwriting looks a bit like the Prime Minister’s style.”
“Oh? This concubine has never seen the Prime Minister’s handwriting, so I don’t know how to compare,” Jiang Xin Ren said with a smile, “Perhaps the author admires the Prime Minister and imitated his writing style.”
This was already a common occurrence in the Great Zhou Dynasty. Although Zhuang He Ming didn’t have the title of the top scholar, it was true that he had consecutively passed two imperial examinations.
He was the only person to achieve this in the past fifty years of the Great Zhou Dynasty. The people called him the incarnation of the literary star, and scholars also admired his literary talent. It was quite common for children to imitate the Prime Minister’s copybooks when they started learning.
The Emperor had only mentioned it casually, and it couldn’t possibly be the Prime Minister’s personal handwriting. He was in charge of important court affairs, so where would he find the time to draw such things?
But when the Prime Minister was mentioned, the Emperor felt depressed. Zhuang He Ming held great power and was not as respectful and loyal as other court officials. He often opposed him.
Last year’s imperial examination, in order to give the Second Prince’s maternal clan a boost, he wanted to give the title of the top scholar to the Second Prince’s maternal clan, but unexpectedly…
“If the title of the top scholar can be given out at will, then what’s the point of the imperial examination? Your Majesty, you cannot do this.”
This matter not only made the elder ministers somewhat disapprove of him as the Emperor but also caused countless scholars to be extremely grateful and admire the Prime Minister.
Thinking of this matter, the Emperor was very displeased. Usually, in front of Zhuang He Ming, he had to show extraordinary favor to win him over. How oppressed he felt as the Son of Heaven.
He no longer had the mood to stay in the Jian Jia Palace, “Beloved Consort, take good care of yourself. I just remembered that there are still memorials to be reviewed. I’ll return first and come to see you later.”
Jiang Xin Ren smiled and sent the Emperor to the door. Watching the Emperor leave, her expression immediately darkened.
It was rare for her to express her displeasure so bluntly.
She glanced at the chair where the Emperor had just sat and snorted coldly,
“Quickly change it for me.”
Before, it was fine, but now that she was pregnant, although she wasn’t stupid and the child’s father was very intelligent, what if she got infected by the Emperor?!
Just thinking about it felt like a nightmare.
“He keeps talking about the prince. I really want to give birth to a princess.”
But 086, with the help of its high technology, had long informed her of the child’s gender. It was indeed a prince.
“Even if it’s a prince, I won’t let you be happy for too long.” Jiang Xin Ren smiled maliciously, “I can’t wait for that day to come.”
—————————
Seven months later, Jiang Xin Ren gave birth.
The palace maids in the Jian Jia Palace had made early preparations. They sent Her Highness to the delivery room in an orderly manner, ordered the small kitchen to prepare ginseng soup, and dispatched secret guards to keep a close watch on the Jian Jia Palace to prevent anyone from taking advantage of the situation and harming Her Highness and the young master.
But even if they were so thorough, they couldn’t control everyone’s heart. A large sum of money could shake an originally loyal heart.
In the delivery room, three midwives were guarding Her Highness’ side. Only one of them said she was going to fetch hot water and walked to the corner.
Seeing that no one had noticed her, she quietly reached into her sleeve and grasped the poison given to her by that person.
As long as she sprinkled this powdered drug into the water, it would dissolve immediately upon contact with water, leaving no color or taste. If the pregnant woman used this hot water, she would experience severe bleeding. Once Consort Hui was gone, she would be able to obtain the remaining reward money. She would be able to!
Suddenly, there was a chill in her chest. The midwife looked down in a daze. A sharp sword had pierced through her chest, and blood dripped from the tip of the sword. It was… her blood.
Zhuang He Ming withdrew the sword. The midwife fell to the ground, convulsed a few times, and died.
The other midwives had already been warned. No matter what happened, they were to focus on assisting Her Highness in giving birth. Seeing a medicine bottle roll out of the dead midwife’s hand, they knew she had intended to harm someone. Suppressing their fear, they wholeheartedly attended to Her Highness on the bed.
Jiang Xin Ren heard the commotion and opened her eyes halfway. Her voice was weak, “My lord…”
“I’m here,” Zhuang He Ming walked to the bedside with his sword, leaving a trail of blood. He bent down and caressed her sweat-soaked face, “I’m watching over you.”
She closed her eyes and smiled faintly, “With you here…”
With you here, she would definitely give birth to this child safely and soundly.
With you here, she didn’t need to worry at all.
Just like during the nine months of pregnancy, she hadn’t suffered any harm. All those who wanted to make a move against her were killed by him before they could act.
The next day, as the sun rose in the east, Consort Hui gave birth to the Third Prince. His Majesty was overjoyed and bestowed upon her the title of First-Rank Noble Consort.
