Power was key in their society. That was a truth in their world, one that was utter and absolute. As a powerless boy, Forest knew this, and yet he defied it as a rule. From the moment he turned six years old, old enough to start to understand the evils of their world, he sought out power by any means. He read books, for knowledge was power. He worked out for strength was power.

But, alas, no power came to him. The only real power he seemed to have was choice, enough to leave his family and depart across the state to find his own peace. That, and that alone… was his power.

Yet, despite that, despite everything, all aspects of power that he pursued left him. He could not afford knowledge, for college was expensive. He could not afford a gym or self defense classes, for they were expensive as hell.

Everything seemed hopeless... or was it?
