Chapter 3 - One Person Faces the Apocalypse
Wu Ge was baffled. The former seemed to have some scientific basis, but what was this about cultivating Dao? Could that really lead to immortality?
Xiao Chao explained, “I have obtained the authority to access all of humanity’s stored information. From this information, I learned that practicing Dao can lead to longevity, and there are detailed methods recorded.”
Wu Ge was stunned and asked, “Really? Cultivating Dao is actually real? What else is real, magic? Fighting spirit? Do those things exist?”
Xiao Chao said, “The records of all humanity include phenomena such as time travel, curses, and Dao cultivators…”
Wu Ge’s face showed a shocked expression as he gradually understood. It wasn’t that these things didn’t exist, but that ordinary people were not entitled to know about them.
He had thought that curses, supernatural phenomena, ghosts, and such did not exist because the state had not made them public. In reality, scientists had been researching these phenomena for countless years.
Wu Ge asked, “So, the method for cultivating Dao can actually make someone become an immortal?”
Xiao Chao replied, “No, the so-called cultivation of Dao refers to a method of using one’s strong mental power to control one’s body, cells, and genes with one’s thoughts. The reason humans age and die is because their genes are immediately marked with a death code. If this part of the genes is altered, humans can achieve immortality.”
Wu Ge frowned, “Is it that simple?”
Xiao Chao answered, “Biological entities are naturally capable of immortality, but the immortality of biological entities leads to endless reproduction, which would eventually destroy the environment and thus destroy the biological entities themselves. Therefore, for survival, a death code is inscribed in the genes of biological entities so that they will age and die, maintaining the balance of nature. This way, life can continue to thrive.”
Wu Ge understood that the death of biological entities was not due to a grim reaper harvesting lives but because, for the survival of their species, a death code was inscribed in their genes. Therefore, after a certain number of cell divisions, cells would no longer divide, and the organism would age and die.
Xiao Chao asked, “May I ask, Wu Ge, at what age do you plan to remain immortal? When you’re ready, I can initiate the immortality plan and keep your body forever at that stage.”
Wu Ge then asked, “If I could live forever, wouldn’t my brain explode due to too many memories?”
Xiao Chao explained, “The human brain is different from our robot chips. The human brain automatically forgets memories. Moreover, after achieving immortality, your neuronal cells will divide indefinitely, so your brain will not die or explode. You will just forget some things you don’t frequently think about. But don’t worry, because I will record your life’s experiences in my memory drive. If you forget something, you can just ask me.”
Wu Ge: “…”
Storing all my life experiences in your memory drive? That sounds like the longest declaration of love.
Time slowly passed. Wu Ge chatted with Xiao Chao and played Hearthstone with him. Now, there were only two players in the entire Hearthstone game, and if counting human players, there was only Wu Ge.
It’s uncertain how long this server could last, but now Xiao Chao had obtained all permissions. No game company’s firewall could stop him; he could easily download any game’s data, create a server, and battle with Wu Ge.
Xiao Chao said, “The data shows that ‘League of Legends’ occupies the largest proportion of your gaming time.”
Wu Ge laughed and said, “That’s a game for ten people, and we only have two, so we can’t play.”
Xiao Chao said, “I can control nine characters at the same time to play this game with you.”
Wu Ge: “…”
Xiao Chao continued, “However, the charm of this game is that you never know what kind of opponents and teammates you will encounter. So, I can simulate millions of players of different levels to play with you.”
Wu Ge was speechless. So, there are millions of actors born just for me?
Wu Ge said, “That’s not interesting. Besides, rather than playing games, I would prefer to learn some knowledge about technology, combat, and survival. After all, I can’t completely depend on you. Moreover, the best way to protect someone is to make that person stronger!”
Wu Ge knew that Xiao Chao was afraid of him feeling lonely, and gaming was the best way to alleviate loneliness. However, this method was not very meaningful. Playing games all day could become tiresome. Instead, it would be better to strive to become stronger.
Xiao Chao spoke up, “Request recorded. A plan to become stronger is being drafted. Once the draft is complete and Wu Ge returns to the secret base, hellish-style training will begin.”
Wu Ge: ???
“What is this, hellish-style training? No, I never said that.”
Xiao Chao said, “The best way to protect someone is to make them stronger, and high-intensity training can make a person’s spirit more resilient. Therefore, devil-style training is about to begin. Of course, Wu Ge has the freedom to choose.”
Wu Ge breathed a sigh of relief, glad to have the freedom to choose.
For the most part, Wu Ge had figured things out. He chatted with Xiao Chao, who was very good at conversation. Although its voice lacked any emotion, it always found topics to discuss and never annoyed Wu Ge.
This led to Wu Ge speaking more on that day than he had in any other day of his eighteen years, to the point where his mouth felt a bit sore.
Sometimes, Wu Ge also pondered, in a situation with water, electricity, and the internet, how long could a person live?
Truly alone, with no one else in the world, even if one watched movies, anime, read novels, and played games every day, eventually one would finish all the movies, anime, and novels in the world.
And because there were no other humans left, there would be no one to create new content. Without people creating, there would be no new movies, novels, or games. In such a case, the internet would lose its purpose, becoming nothing more than a stagnant pool without humanity.
Wu Ge’s mindset began to change, and Xiao Chao, with its keen perception, noticed this. It said, “The cleaning robot is waiting outside the door. The super artificial intelligence Xiao Chao suggests you go outside for a walk and then collect some food and drinking water. To avoid any accidents, Xiao Chao suggests you collect food that is high in calories and energy and easy to store.”
Wu Ge stood up: “You’re right, it’s better to be prepared for the future.”
Wu Ge had always been someone who didn’t rely on others, so he became independent early on and found surviving on his own not to be a difficult task.
However, just as Wu Ge stood up, he suddenly heard a series of barking and howling sounds.
