Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Olvia
"Captain, we can't escape. Even if we all die, it doesn't matter—but Olvia must not die."
"Yes, Captain, think of a way to save Olvia!"
Several people who were tied up spoke to their leader—the young man.
The young man addressed as "Captain" had a tense expression. The "Olvia" they mentioned wasn't just anyone—she was his wife.
When he first set out, he had brought his wife along with him. But a few months ago, everything changed—his wife became pregnant. That was why his companions were pleading with him now.
But he didn't know how to ask for mercy. On the one hand, Olvia was his wife, but on the other hand, the rest of the group were his companions. How could he ask to save his wife and leave the others behind?
On top of that, he doubted the Navy officer in front of them would agree so easily.
Yet this hesitation only lasted for a moment. For the sake of his wife and unborn child, he couldn't care about anything else.
"Sir, you can arrest me or even kill me—I won't resist. But I have one request: please let my wife go. She's not part of the archaeological team. She's not your target. Please... let her go."
"Not part of the team? Do you think I'll believe that?"
Jon, of course, had overheard their earlier conversation and didn't believe for a second that this woman was innocent.
The young man pleaded desperately:
"She really isn't part of the team! She's pregnant... I beg you, let her go."
"Pregnant?"
Jon's expression changed with shock as his gaze shifted toward the woman hanging from one of the trees—the only woman in the group.
He used his Observation Haki to sense her, and sure enough, he heard not one heartbeat, but two. The young man wasn't lying. There was another heartbeat—faint but distinct—from within the woman. The child was nearly fully formed—a true life.
"This..."
Jon had never intended to kill them himself. However, he knew that if he handed them over to CP9, they wouldn't survive. Even so, he didn't feel particularly guilty.
Everyone was an adult—they had to take responsibility for their choices. They knew that their actions could cost their lives, yet they chose to continue. That meant they had accepted the possible consequences.
This was their choice, and Jon didn't feel remorse—not even for the pregnant woman.
But as he listened to that fragile heartbeat and faint, unborn breath, he felt a pang of guilt.
The mistakes of adults shouldn't be paid for by innocent children. If he handed this woman over to CP9, she and her unborn child wouldn't survive.
The thought of a life that had barely begun being snuffed out made Jon hesitate.
"Damn it... Am I really getting soft-hearted?"
Since arriving in this world, Jon had told himself time and again that in this cruel world, he had to be ruthless. Only by being ruthless could he survive.
Up until now, he hadn't personally killed anyone. But if the time came, he was certain he wouldn't hesitate.
"Every man for himself—survival of the fittest."
Though Jon hadn't reached that extreme, he was undeniably self-serving. He did everything with his own survival in mind.
The branch holding the pregnant woman began to lower her gently to the ground. Once free, she ran to her husband's side and cried, calling his name.
"I'll make an exception this one time—not because of your begging, but for the child's sake. I don't want a baby who hasn't even opened its eyes to be doomed to die before seeing this world. After all, who knows how many lifetimes it took for that soul to be born here? At the very least, it deserves a glimpse of this world."
Jon sighed wistfully.
In the past, he wouldn't have believed in anything like reincarnation.
But after experiencing reincarnation himself by transmigrating to this world, who was to say reincarnation wasn't real? Even if it wasn't, at least it gave him a reason to justify his decision to himself.
"Is this compassion, or is it just basic humanity?"
"Thank you... thank you!"
The young man, who had been full of anger moments ago, was now overwhelmed with gratitude. He knew this was the greatest concession Jon would make.
"You have two minutes. If you're still here after that, I won't hesitate to change my mind." Jon warned.
The couple clung to each other and sobbed. After witnessing Jon's power, they had already accepted their fate and knew there was no point in resisting. If they could save even one person, they were satisfied.
Jon ignored their words and didn't look at them again until two minutes had passed.
When the man saw Jon's gaze shift back to him, he hardened his heart and shouted,
"Olvia, go! Run!"
The woman named Olvia didn't want to leave her husband, but as she considered their situation, she gritted her teeth and slowly backed away. Her tear-filled eyes never left her husband—she knew this was the last time they'd ever see each other.
"Olvia... our child. I've already decided on her name—Robin. We'll call her Robin."
"Robin?"
The first person to react wasn't Olvia—it was Jon. He stared at the couple in shock.
Robin.
That name was incredibly familiar. In the One Piece world, anyone who knew the story would instantly recognize it.
"Robin... could it really be that Nico Robin?"
Jon was stunned. When he thought of their identities—coming from O'Hara—and heard the name Olvia, he finally made the connection.
Nico Olvia.
The mother of Nico Robin.
Hearing her name earlier hadn't triggered anything for Jon, but the mention of "Robin" confirmed her identity.
"Unbelievable... I almost killed Nico Robin before she was even born."
Jon was overwhelmed with emotion. If he hadn't shown mercy, the beloved and brilliant Nico Robin wouldn't exist in the future.
As Olvia prepared to leave, Jon—perhaps due to Robin's significance—called out to her.
"If you want to survive, don't try to leave the island immediately. It's sealed off. Staying hidden here will be safer for now."
Whether Olvia understood his warning or not, Jon wasn't sure. He had already done what he could. If Robin was destined to survive, Olvia wouldn't be discovered.
After Olvia left, Jon turned to the archaeologists and issued a stern warning.
"As far as you're concerned, that woman never existed. She wasn't one of you. If word gets out... it won't affect me much. But you, and that woman, will suffer for it. Understood?"
The archaeologists nodded and promised to keep Olvia's existence a secret.
Moments later, Pemberton arrived with reinforcements. When he saw that Jon had captured the entire archaeological team by himself, he was astonished.
