Chapter 35: Chapter 35: "I’ve Seen Through You"

Soon, Pemberton arrived with several soldiers. Jon said, "This man is all yours."

The man, who had been struggling earlier, suddenly stopped resisting when he saw Pemberton and the others, as if he had accepted his fate.

Pemberton ordered his men to restrain the man and reported to Jon:

"Our men have spread out to search, but we haven't found any other targets. The two remaining search leaders are still out there with their teams."

Jon frowned slightly. He remembered that Spandine had mentioned that the archaeological team of historians was split into several groups, each with many members and their own ships. It didn't make sense to capture only one person and find no trace of the others.

There was only one possibility.

Jon walked up to the man, looked at him, and suddenly said:

"You did it on purpose."

The man glared at Jon fiercely but didn't speak.

Jon didn't seem to mind and continued:

"If I'm not mistaken, you intentionally let us find you. But why? After thinking it through, there's only one possibility—you're covering for your comrades' escape, aren't you?"

The man's expression changed slightly, but he still snorted coldly.

"I don't know what you're talking about. I have no idea why you're arresting me. You've got the wrong person."

Pemberton wasn't as patient. He barked sternly:

"Still trying to deny it? Speak! Where did your comrades go?"

"I don't know what you're talking about." The man clung stubbornly to his denial, repeating the same line.

A cold glint flashed in Pemberton's eyes. Though he usually acted like a mild-mannered man who kept to himself, that didn't mean he was without a temper. As a member of the elite unit, he was by no means ordinary.

"It seems you won't speak the truth unless you're taught a lesson."

With that, he raised his gun and pointed it at the man:

**"I won't kill you, but I'll shoot your leg. And after the wound opens up, I'll smear honey on it and bring in some ants. You'll enjoy it, I promise. And that's just step one.

If you still don't talk, I have plenty more methods. Oh, by the way, I'm a chef. One of life's greatest joys is eating. But if your food's no good... well, it can be worse than death. Want to give it a try?"**

Jon stared at Pemberton in shock—he didn't expect Pemberton to have this side to him.

The man, on the other hand, began to sweat. He knew that these soldiers weren't exactly known for their kindness. They were entirely capable of carrying out such threats.

"Still not talking?"

When the man stayed silent, Pemberton grinned ominously. It had to be said—he looked quite intimidating at that moment.

"Since you won't speak, I'll make you taste it now. As long as you don't die, it's fine."

But the man was stubborn. Even though fear gripped his heart, he still refused to speak.

Just as Pemberton was about to make his move, Jon spoke up:

"Enough. Leave him to me."

Pemberton looked surprised.

"Jon, do you really know how to interrogate?"

He knew Jon was from the South Sea branch, but because of Jon's age, he didn't think he would know any brutal interrogation techniques. That was why he had stepped up himself.

Jon rolled his eyes. To be honest, his interrogation methods would definitely be scarier than Pemberton's. In his past life, all the TV shows, movies, and novels he had read weren't for nothing. He might not have tried them before, but his mind was filled with countless ideas.

"Those methods take too much time. We don't have the luxury to waste time here. Leave it to me."

Since this man had chosen to stay behind, it meant he was a tough nut to crack. Even harsh methods might not get results quickly. Jon was ready to try his approach.

The man looked at Jon with suspicion. Jon chuckled and said:

"Don't worry—I'm not a violent person. I won't use those kinds of methods on you, and I won't hurt you."

"The way you say that makes it sound like I'm some kind of monster," Pemberton muttered from the side.

Jon ignored him and continued:

"Now, I'll ask, and you'll answer. Of course, it's fine if you don't answer."

The man was baffled by Jon's words. What kind of interrogation was this?

Jon didn't give him time to think and asked directly:

"That question from earlier—you're covering for your comrades' escape, right?"

The man remained silent, but Jon wasn't annoyed. Instead, he instructed the two soldiers holding him:

"Hold him steady and make sure his eyes stay on me."

The man struggled with all his might but couldn't break free and was forced to look into Jon's eyes.

Jon stared directly into the man's eyes and asked:

"Looks like I was right. Next question: how many people are in your team? Thirty? Twenty-nine? Twenty-eight? … Twenty-two? Ha, so there are twenty-two of you."

Jon then turned to Pemberton and said:

"Take note. Their group has twenty-two people. With him caught, that leaves twenty-one."

Pemberton was stunned. "What's going on? He didn't say a word—how are you so sure there are twenty-two of them?"

But when he instinctively looked at the man, his expression changed. The man's face had become one of utter terror.

"Hiss—"

Seeing that genuine fear, Pemberton was shaken. Jon's deduction was probably spot-on.

Jon kept going.

"You're cooperating well—I'm very pleased. Next question—huh? Why are you closing your eyes? Do you think closing your eyes will stop me from interrogating you?"

Before Jon could ask again, the man shut his eyes tightly. The soldiers tried to force them open, but Jon stopped them.

"It's fine. Whether his eyes are open or closed makes no difference to me."

"You stayed behind as bait, so which way did your comrades flee? This way? That way? Over there? Oh... I see. So, it's that way."

The man, who had his eyes shut tight, suddenly opened them. When he saw where Jon was pointing, he exploded like an enraged lion.

"I don't know what you're talking about! I didn't tell you anything! You're insane! A lunatic! I'm not the person you're looking for, and I don't know where they went!"

Watching the man's emotional breakdown, Pemberton gave Jon a thumbs up. As someone with interrogation experience, Pemberton could tell that Jon's results were accurate—otherwise, the man wouldn't have broken so quickly.

"What are you waiting for? Get our people moving in that direction!"

The soldiers quickly relayed the order to the search teams, who immediately headed in the direction Jon had pointed out.

Jon and Pemberton stayed behind, keeping their eyes on the man who had fallen apart.

"You're crazy... you're a lunatic...!"

The man continued to curse, unable to accept how easily Jon had figured everything out.

Pemberton waved his hand, signaling for the soldiers to take him away.
