Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Spandine
"Jon, why don't you bring Vites under your command as well? With Vice Admiral Norville's orders, he wouldn't dare refuse. Then you can make things difficult for him." Pemberton suddenly suggested with a mischievous grin.
Jon looked at Pemberton in surprise—this guy was truly devious.
Although Vites had a higher rank than him, with Norville's backing, Vites wouldn't dare defy orders. At that point, Jon really could make things difficult for him.
"Forget it. Just seeing that guy irritates me. I'd rather not deal with him than waste time making his life harder."
Jon and Vites had been classmates, but Jon found Vites the most annoying—overly ambitious, cold, petty, and vengeful, with an endless amount of nonsense. Jon had no patience for someone like that.
"True, out of sight, out of mind," Pemberton agreed.
The warship quickly departed from the Navy Headquarters, heading north.
With such a large warship sailing through the seas, most pirates smart enough to see it steered clear. As a result, Jon and his crew encountered no suicidal pirates along the way and reached their destination on the third day.
The warship docked at an island, the location CP intelligence agents had provided to Norville.
Following Norville, Jon soon met several men dressed in suits.
"Vice Admiral Norville, I am Spandine from CP9."
The speaker was a middle-aged man in his thirties with long curly hair and a square face, smiling amiably as he addressed Norville.
Norville maintained a calm expression and asked directly, "Has the target been confirmed?"
Spandine responded, "According to our investigation, these historians didn't stay together as one group but split into several smaller ones. We haven't gathered information on all of them—we've only captured a few individuals. But more are still in hiding. We're certain, however, that they have a hideout on this island."
"What do you want us to do?" Norville asked.
Spandine replied, "We don't have enough manpower. We need the Navy's assistance. The simplest way to catch them all is to surround the island."
"Surround the entire island? You must be joking. We only have a few hundred men—how can we possibly surround it?" Norville exclaimed.
The island wasn't as large as some massive nations, but it wasn't small either. Surrounding an entire island with a few hundred men was an impossible task.
Spandine explained, "We don't need to encircle the entire island. We've been tracking them for a long time and found some clues that led us to their approximate location. The purpose of surrounding the island is to prevent any of them from escaping—we need to capture every last one."
Norville frowned and thought for a moment before speaking, "My orders are to assist you. Since you have a plan, we'll follow it. If you fail to capture them, it won't be on us."
In terms of status, even the director of CP9 was on par with a vice admiral. Since Spandine was not yet the director, he was relatively humble when dealing with Norville.
Spandine sneered, "Those guys are just a bunch of powerless scholars. If we didn't want to catch them all in one go, this wouldn't be so troublesome."
In truth, there was a significant difference between CP9 and CP0. If it were CP0, they likely would have captured the scholars long ago. CP9 didn't have the same efficiency—partly due to their lack of power and partly due to their limited manpower.
As an intelligence agency, CP9 focused more on information gathering than combat strength. That's why, except for CP0, the other CP organizations often requested help from the Navy when they ran into trouble.
"We've narrowed it down to a town where they're most likely hiding. I've already sent people to monitor it. If we act now, we can capture them all."
Spandine's face lit up with excitement—this was his first time leading such an important mission.
The current director of CP9 was rumored to be transferring to CP0 soon, which meant the position of director would soon be vacant.
Spandine had pulled many strings and made significant sacrifices to compete for the role of director. This mission was crucial—it had been personally assigned by the Five Elders.
If he completed this task successfully, he would be one step closer to becoming director. This was why he was so determined to catch the historians.
"Alright, let's go. You lead the way."
Norville didn't hesitate. He left about half his men behind to guard the ports as per Spandine's plan and led the main force to follow Spandine.
Jon followed behind, curiously observing Spandine. He recognized the name—Spandine was a character from the original storyline, the man responsible for initiating the Buster Call on Ohara. He was also the father of Spandam, who later lost to the Straw Hat Pirates.
"Did this guy start investigating historians this early?"
Halfway to their destination, Spandine's Den Den Mushi began to ring.
He answered the call, only to receive news that made him furious.
"What? The targets you were watching escaped?"
"Useless fools! What do you even get paid for? I told you to keep an eye on them, and you let them get away? You're all incompetent!"
Seeing Spandine jumping up and down in anger, Norville asked, "Spandine, what happened?"
Spandine's face was dark. "Some of the suspected targets escaped."
"All of them?" Norville asked.
"We're not entirely sure yet. We don't have all their information. We were lying in wait, planning to catch them all when you arrived, but somehow they slipped through our grasp."
Although furious, Spandine still took the time to explain the situation to Norville.
In truth, he was helpless—he only had a few dozen people on his team and feared that if they acted too soon, the targets would scatter and flee. That was why he had sought the Navy's help.
He didn't want any of the historians to escape, which was why he involved the Navy. According to his intel, the group consisted of over a hundred individuals divided into several teams. Capturing all of them would be a significant achievement.
"They have that many people?" Norville immediately latched onto the critical detail.
At this point, Spandine could only tell the truth. "Our investigation indicates that there are over a hundred historians, divided into several teams. They seem to have gathered here because of an important discovery."
"No wonder," Norville muttered, astonished. He hadn't expected the group to be so large.
"Hurry and lead the way."
Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Norville urged Spandine to move quickly.
Jon listened closely to their conversation, equally surprised.
It sounded like the historians weren't entirely defenseless. Otherwise, Spandine would have acted already.
A team of over a hundred people—that was a sizable force.
Then again, considering Ohara's reputation as a center for scholars and archaeologists for generations, sending out a hundred-person team to explore historical texts didn't seem far-fetched.
