Chapter 65: 65: Embarking on the Journey
"Exhausted!"
This was the first time Luffy had felt true fatigue. He couldn't explain it, but a strange mental exhaustion weighed on him, though his body remained as strong as ever. It seemed that maybe… the Ultimate Chicken Dinner ritual shouldn't have been started so casually.
But Luffy shook his head. As long as everyone was happy, as long as they had fun, then everything was worth it. Everything was just as it should be.
Slowly, he stood up. Last night, over a hundred people had partied until they literally collapsed, utterly spent and exhilarated. The game had been intense, blending into their training, pushing them to their limits. Everyone was drained, but it had helped them grow stronger. Were it not for Luffy's explosive stamina and boundless energy, he might've ended up worn out, too.
But as the saying goes: too much fun can be tiring.
"Ah!" he sighed, stretching as he prepared to leave.
"Hm?"
Suddenly, he felt something gripping his ankle. Looking down, he saw it was Boa Hancock.
"Hancock?" he asked gently. "What's wrong? Weren't you asleep? I remember you were the one having the most fun last night—you almost scared me!"
Luffy wasn't exaggerating. Last night, Hancock had completely let loose, more than anyone else. Of course, he knew why: she dreaded his departure, and in her heart, this was her way of making every moment count.
Hancock's voice was raspy, almost hoarse, as she replied, "I'm afraid… afraid that I won't get to be this close with you again."
She sounded as if she had strained herself, which was true. During the game, she'd cheered the loudest, her voice echoing across the entire island. But that wasn't important to her—not when she had fully embraced this night.
"You're really leaving, aren't you?" Hancock whispered. "Rayleigh mentioned something about taking you to Sabaody Archipelago early tomorrow."
Luffy chuckled and shook his head. "Rayleigh doesn't need to take me. I can go alone; that's more than enough."
In truth, he didn't want anyone tagging along. In his past life, he hadn't been strong enough—without Rayleigh by his side, he would have been caught in an instant.
"What?" Hancock's eyes filled with concern. "Luffy… it's a long journey, and it's dangerous to go alone. If Rayleigh takes you, it'll be much safer."
Seeing her worry warmed Luffy's heart. He bent down slightly, took her hand in his, and said softly, "Hancock… who am I?"
Hancock paused, then broke into a smile. "You're Luffy. You're the world's greatest man. You're the one we all love… Monkey D. Luffy!"
She understood his confidence. She knew his power.
But still, she added, "Luffy, I know your strength is unmatched, but… it'd be safer with Rayleigh."
Luffy interrupted her, his voice soothing. "Hancock, your voice is hoarse. Why don't you rest up? Don't worry—I'll be back soon. And when I return… you'll be even happier. You'll feel even more exhilarated."
As he spoke, Luffy let his Conqueror's Haki ripple through the air, enveloping her with its reassuring warmth.
"Ah…" Hancock's head swayed as a drowsiness overtook her. Just before she fully drifted off, she whispered, "Take care… I'll be waiting for you to finish everything."
With that, she began to snore softly, her worries momentarily set aside.
She fell asleep.
Luffy nodded with satisfaction, a warm smile on his face. Boa Hancock was truly adorable. Whether awake or asleep, her charm was undeniable.
Gently, he reached out and pinched her cheek for a moment, his touch light and affectionate. Then, without making a sound, he turned to leave.
"Whoosh!"
The wind howled as a single straw hat swayed gently on the edge of a rock.
Suddenly!
A shadow darted forward with lightning speed—it was Luffy.
Breaking into a grin, he exclaimed, "Straw Hat! Time for us to go."
He grabbed the hat from the rock.
"Huh?"
The moment he picked it up, Luffy felt a surge of strange energy. It was subtle but unmistakable, as if the hat itself held a hidden power.
Focusing intently, he allowed himself to feel it. His Conqueror's Haki enveloped the straw hat as he began to probe its depths, diving into its secrets.
Bit by bit, he explored, deciphering and analyzing the enigmatic energy coursing through the hat.
Soon, vivid images began to flow through his mind.
It was like watching a reel of memories unfold—fragmented at first, then gradually gaining clarity.
Luffy caught a glimpse of a figure.
A man, standing tall, wearing a straw hat.
"Who is this…?" Luffy wondered.
But then it hit him. That silhouette was familiar.
"Red-Haired Shanks!"
Yes, it was Shanks. The unmistakable outline of the man who had given him his treasured hat. Shanks stood motionless in the vision, like a statue suspended in time.
The scenes shifted, morphing into something new. Another figure appeared.
"This one is…"
Luffy hesitated for a moment. The image was hazy, but there was something recognizable about it.
He squinted, piecing it together until realization struck.
"Gol D. Roger!"
Indeed, it was Roger. The Pirate King, in his youth. His features looked different, but there was no mistaking him now.
Roger, too, stood silent and still.
The visions continued, the pace accelerating until it felt as though time itself had burst apart.
"Ah?"
Abruptly, everything came to a halt.
A lone figure stood in the distance, their straw hat casting a shadow over their face.
Like Shanks and Roger, this individual radiated an aura of immense power. But their presence was even more overwhelming, almost suffocating in its intensity.
Suddenly!
The figure turned toward Luffy.
They smiled—a grin so wide it seemed to split their face in two. Their laughter rang out, wild and unrestrained, echoing with a familiar yet indescribable energy.
Luffy strained to see more, desperate to make out their features. All he could catch was that massive, laughing mouth, wide open in a moment of pure, reckless joy.
He reached out, trying to grasp the image more clearly. But before he could, an invisible force threw him back, sending his mind spiraling.
The next moment, his eyes snapped open.
Of course, he wasn't certain but who else could it be? That wild, untamed laughter—so bold and unapologetic—it could only belong to him.
Luffy nodded to himself, his confidence swelling.
"Not bad," he said aloud. "Every one of them wore this hat at some point. Shanks. Roger. "
Clutching the straw hat tightly, Luffy grinned.
"All right," he declared, his voice brimming with determination. "The things you couldn't finish… I'll take care of them all!"
Luffy's spirit burned brighter than ever, his resolve unshakable. He would succeed where others had fallen short.
Without realizing it, a pure, defiant smile spread across his face. It was a smile full of freedom and willpower—his laughter unrestrained, echoing through the empty air.
"Laugh all you want," he said, his voice carrying the weight of his promise. "I'll handle everything."
With that, he took a step forward and leapt into the sky, his body shooting upward like a cannonball.
"Splash!"
In an instant, he plunged straight into the sea below.
The current felt like a warm cradle, gently carrying Luffy as he drifted into the distance.
Yes, his mode of transportation wasn't a ship. It wasn't a raft or anything conventional.
It was simply the water itself.
Pure, simple, and uniquely comfortable, the current was Luffy's chosen vehicle.
Laughing wildly, he used his Conqueror's Haki to command the flow, manipulating the water molecules directly. The sea itself obeyed him, propelling him forward with unstoppable momentum.
All around him, the ocean exploded with activity.
Fish of all sizes leapt joyfully from the water, drawn by Luffy's infectious energy. Controlled by his will, they followed him as loyal companions, gliding along with the current that bore him.
"Rise up!" Luffy shouted, his voice brimming with excitement.
The water responded, surging skyward.
"Whoosh!"
In an instant, the current transformed into a towering vortex, spiraling upward like a waterspout.
Luffy reveled in the chaos, laughing uncontrollably.
The further he traveled, the more spectacular his antics became.
He played endlessly, his energy seeming boundless.
"Always hyped. Always explosive."
"Let's go all the way to the ends of the earth!"
His voice rang out in gleeful defiance, carrying over the roaring waves.
At first, the companions in his watery parade were ordinary fish. But as time passed, they were joined by sharks, massive sea creatures, and eventually, even Sea Kings.
Drawn by Luffy's unrelenting energy, these titanic beings fell under his control, merging into the swirling current. Together, they created a living, moving spectacle.
The sea itself seemed alive with celebration, boiling over with activity.
But amidst this jubilation, a shadow lurked.
A particular Sea King, its senses sharp, caught the scent of something irresistible.
"Roar!"
The beast's stomach growled loudly—it was starving.
This was the Calm Belt, where prey was scarce. Days, sometimes weeks, passed without a single ship venturing through its waters. For a creature of its size, hunger was a constant companion.
But now, it had found something.
Something big.
With a deep growl, the Sea King peered into the distance, its massive eyes narrowing.
What it saw left it stunned.
An enormous current, teeming with fish—an unthinkable banquet.
"Roar!"
Its roar echoed with joy, its mind overwhelmed by the prospect of such a feast.
Without hesitation, the beast dove into the water, speeding toward the swirling current.
Meanwhile, Luffy was still lost in his playful euphoria, laughing and shouting as he rode the flow.
"Huh?"
Suddenly, his instincts flared.
Something was wrong.
"What's this?"
Luffy's sharp senses picked up on the disturbance. Fish were disappearing from the current—devoured by something lurking below.
A frown crossed his face.
"Damn it!" Luffy growled.
"Those are my friends! How dare you eat them!"
"You're asking for it!"
As he spoke, more fish were swallowed. Even a smaller Sea King fell victim, disappearing into the beast's maw with terrifying ease.
"Unbelievable…" Luffy muttered.
For something to gulp down a Sea King in one bite, it had to be a truly massive creature.
His Conqueror's Haki flared to life, surging out in every direction.
Moments later, he found the culprit.
And then, he laughed.
"Well, look at you."
"Judging by your size… you've got the strength of a pirate worth ten billion berries!"
It wasn't an exaggeration. Luffy had scanned the creature's power, and its aura was monstrous.
"Perfect," he said with a grin.
"Let's play."
With that, Luffy sprang into action.
"Whoosh!"
His Conqueror's Haki sharpened into a blade, taking the form of a colossal cleaver.
The beast, sensing the threat, roared in defiance. But it was too late.
A single strike from Luffy's Haki blade crashed down, sending a reverberation through the Sea King's skull.
The creature froze, its consciousness flickering. For a moment, it felt as if its very soul had been struck.
"I could finish you in one blow," he said.
"But no… I'm going to take my time."
"After all, you ate so many of my friends. You deserve to suffer."
Of course, there was another reason.
While Luffy's words carried truth, they only told half the story.
The other half?
Luffy was hungry.
It had been ages since he'd had a proper feast, and most of the recent catches hadn't been up to his standards.
But this beast?
Its size and strength made it the perfect meal.
"Oh, yeah," Luffy muttered to himself, his stomach growling.
"This is going to be amazing."
