Episode 62 - The Star Beyond the River - Reading (2)
“Oh my, actor Jin.”
The director stood there stiffly, resembling the same rigid figure as when Ryu Yeon-woo entered.
Jin yu-han greeted the director and approached Ryu Yeon-woo to say hello.
“Yeon-woo, how have you been?”
“Yes, I spent my vacation during the break. Did you have a good time too, yu-han?”
Although it had only been a short while, there was a somewhat awkward feeling between them as they had competed for the same role.
Ryu Yeon-woo naturally seemed more mature than his actual age, and Jin yu-han didn’t feel like a twenty-year-old youth either, perhaps due to having been in society since a young age.
“Well, shall we speak informally? We’re the same age, and since our roles are that of friends.”
Upon Ryu Yeon-woo’s suggestion, Jin yu-han nodded readily.
“Should we? I’m fine with that.”
When Ryu Yeon-woo first heard the news that Jin yu-han had joined as Lee Ji-baek after losing the role of Seo Hee to him, he felt somewhat puzzled.
Of course, it wasn’t just Ryu Yeon-woo who felt puzzled, most of the broadcasting station staff found it strange as well.
At first, they thought it might be because he was in his twenties and thus might have harbored some immature intentions to sabotage him out of jealousy. However, upon meeting him in person, he turned out to be a cheerful friend, much to their surprise.
Smiling and speaking from beside Ryu Yeon-woo, Jin yu-han said, “I heard the audition results, and I felt somewhat happy and excited. I was really curious about your acting. Acting is my only hobby, you know.”
Yeon-woo smiled at his words that didn’t seem malicious.
“Perhaps it’s not because of my acting skills. I just happen to enjoy analyzing scripts meticulously and thoroughly. I guess my analysis appealed to the writer.”
After that, the two immersed themselves in discussing the work as if they were a perfect match.
Director Lee Sang-hoon watched them with a pleased expression.
“Capture it well. Don’t miss a single moment.”
At that moment, a high-toned greeting could be heard from beyond the door.
“Hello! Oh, hello. Senior!”
With a lively entrance, Seo Ji-eun greeted everyone with a 90-degree bow in all directions.
After greeting the director and the writer, she came over to Ryu Yeon-woo and Jin yu-han.
“Hello! I’m Seo Ji-eun.”
Despite being younger than them, Seo Ji-eun greeted them with the same 90-degree bow as she did with other seniors.
Ryu Yeon-woo and Jin yu-han stood up from their seats and greeted Seo Ji-eun face to face.
“I’m a fan of you two!”
Putting her hands together, Seo Ji-eun confessed her admiration for Ryu Yeon-woo and Jin yu-han with sparkling eyes.
“Oh, thank you. I also enjoyed your work, miss Ji-eun.”
Yeon-woo smiled as he accepted her compliment, while Jin yu-han, who seemed genuinely uninterested in anything other than acting, politely smiled and nodded.
“Oh, hearing ‘miss. Ji-eun’ sounds somewhat cringy… but since we’re friends even in our drama, shall we be friends?”
Hhe appeared to be two years older than her, but she didn’t seem particularly mind.
“Oh, haha. Is that so?”
Yeon-woo smiled awkwardly and scratched his head slightly.
‘No matter how you look at this, she’s a very little Han So-hyeon, isn’t she?’
Since it was a historical drama, many middle-aged and veteran actors attended, and the lead actors on set were busy greeting them.
“Oh my, Yu-han has grown a lot, hasn’t he? I can’t recognize him anymore.”
There are some of the veteran actors who recognized Yu-han on set.
Having appeared in numerous works since childhood as a child actor, it was somewhat expected.
Naturally, the attention of the veteran actors shifted towards Ryu Yeon-woo, who, despite being the same age as him, had taken the lead role over Yu-han.
“Well, now that everyone seems to be here, let’s start slowly.”
Director Lee Sang-hoon, sitting at the head of the table, stood up to speak, and the meeting room fell silent.
“I’m Lee Sang-hoon, the director of ‘The Star Beyond the River’. Let’s make it a memorable drama.”
Applause followed.
Starting with Director Lee Sang-hoon, the directors and actors began their self-introductions.
He didn’t participate in the reading as a cameo in ‘Spring Lovers’.
He was the third in Summer Promise’.
He was the second in ‘Master Plan’.
In ‘The Star Beyond the River’, he took on his first role and was the first to greet.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Ryu Yeon-woo, playing the role of Seo Hee in ‘The Star Beyond the River.’ It’s an honor to work with senior actors.”
Feeling humble as he noticed all eyes on him, from veteran actors to middle-aged actors, Yeon-woo spoke.
“I’ve heard that being an actor means learning a lot. I’ll learn a lot from this project. Thank you.”
Seeing Yeon-woo, who spoke with a mature voice beyond his years, expressing his determination for this project, smiles appeared on the faces of the middle-aged actors.
Afterward, other actors shared their thoughts one by one, and it was time to start reading the script.
“Shall we start the reading then? We’ll start from the scene of Dalyeong on the third page, skipping a few scenes since they’ll be shot separately.”
The actors immersed themselves in the script as directed by the director.
Dalyeong, busy going back and forth from the bookshelf since morning, received letters from prominent households and gathered everyone together.
“Oh my, it’s work every morning.”
Actor Moon Jeong-yeol, who played the role of Dalyeong, delivered his lines.
Then, Yeon-woo, tapping lightly on the desk to simulate opening the door, delivered his lines.
“Why do you collect everything?”
Hearing Yeon-woo’s lines and his natural delivery suitable for the historical drama, the veteran actors nodded in approval.
“Oh, young master. How could I refuse the letters that the ladies write to you?”
“No need. From tomorrow, I’ll have the gate locked and won’t open it.”
“In that case, the maids will have to wait in line all morning.”
Upon Dalyeong’s words, Seo Hee nodded as if in agreement, stroking his chin.
“Yeah, your words make sense. What could be wrong with them? If that’s the case, then it’s good. Hand them over here.”
Dalyeong handed over the letters with excitement upon the young master’s rare acceptance of receiving letters today.
“Here you go, young master. This one here belongs to Captain Han’s second wife, and the yellow one is…”
As Seo Hee accepted the bundle of letters, he walked towards a corner of the courtyard.
Considering the actual time it takes to walk, there was a brief pause in the dialogue before Moon Jeong-yeol, playing the role of Dalyeong, delivered his lines again.
“Oh, young master, where are you going? This is where the firewood is chopped.”
“Do I not have plenty of firewood in my hands?”
Seo Hee ruthlessly threw the letters handed by Dalyeong into the fire, as if into a blazing furnace.
Seeing the fire burning vigorously, Yeon-woo chuckled softly.
“It burns well. I guess I can reduce the amount of firewood chopping from tomorrow. Since I bring firewood every morning.”
“Oh, young master.”
After Yeon-woo’s first scene, a few more scenes followed until the scene where Yeon-woo faced Ji-eun for the first time.
“Ouch.”
Hong Ui-yeon, who was running around frantically clutching her skirt, collided with Seo Hee.
Hong Ui-yeon is about to fall flat on her face saw a puddle of dirty water ahead.
Seo-hee looked at the scene from behind, and after much thought, he pushed up on Hong’s hips with his toes to stop her from falling.
It’s better to avoid falling into the muddy water than falling in love.
Of course, just imagining the situation described in the script, Yeon-woo injected some strength into his toes and delivered his lines, breathing out between lines.
“Are you alright?”
“..Ouch, my buttocks!? How could you be so impolite to a lady?”
“Me?”
Seo Hee playfully retorted with a cocked head, while Hong Ui-yeon, who was trying to glare at Seo Hee while rubbing the part where she was pushed, couldn’t be seen clearly due to the black hair covering her face.
“I was just standing here quietly, and you came running. Of course, as the captain, I helped you so you wouldn’t fall flat on your face?”
After finishing her sentence, Seo Hee looked at Ui-yeon silently. With her logically sound words, Ui-yeon was left speechless.
Then, a maid who had been following Ui-yeon hurried over.
“Miss! Please stay there! If you don’t come back today, the madam will be very upset.”
After glancing back, Ui-yeon grimaced and started running again, avoiding the maid who was chasing after her.
After the lady left, Dalyeong approached and asked Seo Hee, brushing off his shoulder where he had collided.
“Are you alright, young master?”
“How could I get hurt from colliding with a lady? But it’s surprising. Why is she running around like that?”
As they walked along, Seo Hee’s foot stepped on something.
“Hmm? It seems like what the lady dropped earlier.”
“It’s perfume. Young master.”
Hong Ui-yeon dropped her purse while colliding.
“I’ll have to pick it up first.”
“Oh, the ground is dirty. I’ll pick it up.”
Seeing Dalyeong picking up the perfume, Seo Hee called out the maid following behind.
“Hey, look here. Here’s the perfume for your master…”
Ignoring Seo Hee as if she hadn’t heard, the maid just passed by.
“It is the master and the servant.”
Seo Hee clicked his tongue again and walked down the path, arriving at the house of Wang Ham-yoon, his calligraphy teacher.
Wang Ham-yoon was the cousin of King Taejo, and the son of the founder of the country, King Si-gryeom.
In other words, he was of royal descent in Goryeo.
“Why are you late?”
Ham-yoon was surprised when Seo Hee who was never late for appointments, arrived a bit late.
“I was delayed due to some accident.”
Although he didn’t understand the words, Wang Ham-yoon nodded understandingly.
Seo Hee’s friend, Lee Ji-baek, who had come earlier to study calligraphy, looked at him with curiosity.
Seeing him like that, Seo Hee gestured as if to say it was nothing special.
Afterward, their calligraphy study continued, but it was momentarily interrupted by noise outside.
“No, you don’t want to go? Haven’t you seen them in the capital? Ignoring a noble like that.”
On one side, there was a maid he had seen before, and on the other, a woman being dragged in by another maid.
Watching the scene quietly, Wang Ham-yoon finally spoke.
“So, you’re Hong Ui-yeon?”
She was the first daughter of Hong Daegam, a local aristocrat who had moved from the capital to the provinces.
Even though she was an unruly character, she couldn’t be presumptuous in the house of Wang Ham-yoon, a distant relative of the Goryeo Emperor.
“Greetings. I am a lady of the Hong family.”
“I’ll forgive the rudeness. Since we’re in the midst of calligraphy study, come in and sit down.”
Unlike the Joseon Dynasty, in the early days of Goryeo, women couldn’t go out to official positions, but if the parents wished, after marriage, women received equal education for child-rearing.
Given the orders of Prince Wang Ham-yoon, Hong Ui-yeon quietly entered and took a seat.
“Your voice is loud enough to cross walls, but there will be no discrimination against women. Don’t worry.”
Seo Hee and Lee Ji-baek chuckled at the teacher’s words.
And Hong Ui-yeon’s face turned slightly red.
After their calligraphy study ended and they took a break, Seo Hee called for Dalyeong, who was waiting outside, and handed him the perfume he had picked up earlier to give to Hong Ui-yeon.
“Man, take this.”
Taking the perfume handed by Seo Hee, Hong Ui-yeon finally looked up.
“Oh! Didn’t you hit me with your foot earlier?”
“Hit? With your foot?”
Lee Ji-baek looked at Seo Hee upon Ui-yeon’s words.
Seo Hee looked back at Lee Ji-baek and shook his head firmly.
“Not at all.”
As Lee Ji-baek looked at her again, Ui-yeon’s face turned red, and she lowered her head, muttering to herself.
“Even though I haven’t married yet, he kicked me with his foot…”
“That’s not true.”
Looking at Seo Hee, Lee Ji-baek asked.
The moment when Hong Ui-yeon’s buttocks were about to fall…
“Not at all. Think about it. Does that make any sense?”
Seo Hee pointed to Hong Ui-yeon’s long skirt trailing behind her.
Ji-baek alternated his gaze between Hong Ui-yeon and Seo Hee, his expression changing constantly.
“Friend, what on earth are you doing?”
Seo Hee shook his head, seeming troubled by the question.
“Does it make any sense at all?”
Yeon-woo and Seo Ji-eun’s interaction on set was so harmonious that it elicited laughter from those present.
“The assistant writer was right. They fit together perfectly.”
As they sat side by side delivering their lines, their voices, breathing, and even their appearance seemed to complement each other well.
